If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

It’s a good thing D’Anton Lynn is talking about the importance of tackling. The people getting most excited about it, however, are the ones who made a big deal when Todd Orlando talked about its importance. How did it work out with him?

  • If you want to know the toughest coach to work for in the Pac-12, it’s Oregon’s Dan Lanning. He is notorious for making his staff put in more hours than anyone else in the conference. It’ll be interesting to see if burnout becomes an issue there.
  • Lincoln Riley wants a football-only facility. That was why the McKay Center was built and why it’s called the McKay Center! Yes, other sports use it too.

But why are there only football All-American plaques adorning the exit tunnel of the building if it’s for all sports? All athletes use the tunnel to leave the building.

It’s just that USC wants/wanted to pander to Riley and give him a building. It just looks sillier today giving it to a 7-5 coach.

  • And now for some history:

This is from the Dave Levy files.

After USC played Notre Dame in the early 1970’s, USC president John Hubbard flew back to Los Angeles on the team plane.

But then he disappeared for two weeks.

“They couldn’t find him,” Levy said. “They eventually found him in Germany on a bender.”

Those were the days. Before social media. Or cell phones. A member of the Board of Trustees at the time told Levy that Hubbard was warned to change his behavior after the incident or he would lose his job.

  • Former Dodgers second baseman Jim Lefebvre did not go to USC. But his uncle, Henry, played fullback for the Trojans from 1923-25.

Henry Lefebvre reportedly played in the first football game at the Coliseum and scored the first touchdown. He also scored a TD in the 1924 Christmas Festival Bowl, where USC defeated Missouri, 20-7, at the Coliseum. Lefebvre also spent a season on the USC baseball and track teams.

In 2012, 17 years after his death, his ashes turned up at a San Diego car wash. The owner believed a customer had forgotten them after cleaning out his car 6 months earlier.

I’ve written previously about Jim’s father, Benny Lefebvre, who coached a legendary American Legion baseball team to the national title in 1951. The team featured Sparky Anderson and future major-leaguer Billy Consolo. Rene Lacheman was a bat boy and actor Dean Stockwell was a team mascot.

  • USC used to play the Dodgers every year at Dodger Stadium. Here’s the 1964 game. That’s Dodgers star Maury Wills getting back to first base after a pickoff attempt. The USC first baseman is Gary Sutherland.
  • Here is the 1965 USC spring game. Dick Elliot, quarterback for the USC white team, is dragged down from rear by Reds’ John Deschler (85), while Denis Moore moves in from the right.
  • Here are two USC graduates: On the right is the Trojans’ first All-American, Brice Taylor. Did you know he started the Bayou Classic? He was head football coach at Southern when he decided to start scheduling a game with Grambling.

Taylor later became the coach at Jefferson High School and was the first African-American high school head football coach in Los Angeles. For more than 40 years, he was an ordained minister at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles and held a doctorate in theology.

On the left is Roz Wyman, the youngest-ever elected member of the Los Angeles City Council at age 22. She played a pivotal role in bringing the Dodgers to Los Angeles.

      1. Wills had two great season stealing bases, he was no Lou Brock or Rickey Henderson both of whom were far better all around players.

        Wills was also a horrible manager, guy once called for a reliever when none were warming up, tried to cheat by making the batters box a foot longer.

        Had a long time drug and alcohol problem as well.

        But, he was an excellent base stealing coach .

    3. As I’ve said for a while the damage Pat Haden, Lynn Swan, and Clay Helton is going to take more that 2 years to repair. Do wish Riley would focus on everything other than receivers and running backs he then rarely uses. Don’t forget all the older players that transferred out b/c Riley thought a bunch of freshman and transfers would be better. Great way to build a team’s culture.

    But that picture of Kirk Douglas, “I am Spartacus” is remindful of how at 103 he said ‘before you die do something for somebody else,’ which in his usual acerbic manner he gave away millions to various charities
    (but kept 60 for himself)

    1. Kirk was pretty fricking incredible —he could wrestle, box, sing, ride horses, sword fight, throw axes and dance on Viking boat oars…..he also had tremendous empathy –I watched his face grow so sad when Carl Reiner talked about the death of his mother in a Carl Reiner Special on HBO..
      btw —Roz Wyman was one of the most ethical & hardworking City Council members Los Angeles ever had…..along with with Councilman Bernardi…. RIP to both…..
