USC Staff Housecleaning Moves Forward*

North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz has been hired to coach linebackers at USC.

Now the key question is who Entz replaces? Brian Odom coaches inside linebackers and Roy Manning coaches outside linebackers. They are both close to Lincoln Riley. Is Entz replacing one or both?

This feels like a good hire. Entz is obviously being hired because he is a coach. Not a recruiter masquerading as a coach.

UPDATED: USC announced Entz will be assistant head coach for defense/linebackers coach. That was Roy Manning’s title.

“Having a championship-caliber staff is instrumental to the success of our team,” said Riley. “By welcoming Matt Entz, a championship-winning head coach and outstanding defensive mind, we are bolstering our defensive staff. He is going to be an excellent addition to the USC football program.”

    1. Best hire at USC since Pete Carroll.

      This is a Jen Cohen hire, Riley isn’t smart enough to get this guy.

      Also may be a shot at Lincoln Riley, either Riley gets his shit together or this guy takes over, which wouldn’t be bad at all. Entz’s players are coached up, hope he brings some of those blue collar players with him.

      1. You actually believe this was due to Cohen? Brand new head USC DC D’Anton Lynn is ‘bypassed’? Really? If anything he got the final say on the hire or he didn’t look at his rights and controls when he signed up – he did – aside from the money, it’s the main reason he left bel-air tech…..i.e. no ‘midnight moves’ like the former NYJ GM Mike Tannebaum pulled when he decided to sign Tim Tebow not telling Rex Ryan et. al.. Bad programs professional or college don’t allow such to happen

        When has Riley ever shown anyone he was capable of making any of these type of moves? Try never!

        Entz should bring some of his staff and players with him, they are fundamental really good. Watch the execution

      4. I think that Riley’s plan is to leave USC in a couple seasons for the NFL, because he doesnt want to recruit. He is interested in the life balance he can get in the NFL, spending more time with young kids. But he needs one or two great seasons at USC before he gets he job he wants in the NFL. So, yes, there might be a coaching ladder being set up here. When Riley leaves, D’Anton takes over head coach position and Entz moves up to DC and then a couple years as DC and he is head coach material.

        Maybe Cohen has really helped Riley to define a real path forward that makes sense.

      4. GabbyObama: The question was “who do we absolutely need to compete?” I don’t think a LB is absolutely necessary although it would be nice. We still have some talent in that group including Gentry, Cobb, Curtis, and Davis. And our edge rushers are potentially good with Muhammad and the two Freshman. No way we “get an entirely new group of LB” from the portal. That is not realistic. But, I would not expect you to know that since you never played organized football and have limited knowledge about the subject.

      7. USC just hired Matt Entz the head coach at North Dakoda State as LB coach. This guys record as a HC is 60-10. He won 2 division 1 NC’s, lost in the championship game in another and finished 4th in another and his team is still in the play-offs this year for the division 1 championship….all in just 5 years as a HC. I think LR really is turning his attention to the defensive side of the ball.

      8. I am starting to wonder if Caleb wasnt a big part of the problem. Not that he isnt a great player, but did the whole team and staff think Caleb would bail them out? So the o-line is Ok with being mediocre, the defense lets themselves off the hook because Caleb is keeping them in games, even Riley is allowing Caleb to run plays “his way” instead of demanding he play within the system (like checking down and handing off to running backs)???

        We are going to see if the young players on the o-line are even close to being able to play in the bowl game.

      9. If USC plays good, solid football in the Holiday Bowl —- pocket doesn’t collapse after 2 seconds, safeties & corners make tackles, no miscommunication on routes —- it’s gonna be clear that some kind of breakdown occurred between Caleb and the team…

    2. Plowhorse is probably right that there is raw talent at the linebacker position that was poorly coached. But I really dont think Cobb is fast enough to be great, so I think he will be told to go. Maybe I am wrong. And the new coach will either love the potential of Gentry or tell him to hit the portal. Tackett needs alot of coaching before he hits the field, not sure if he will be ready this year. Raesjon is a big question mark.

      And Braylen Shelby is our Laitu Latu (sp?). He is a freak athlete.

  5. Matt Entz’s protruding jaw, posture, and mannerisms look a bit like Kyle Whittingham, probably a good thing. USC needs a little more toughness and less finesse in the program. This guy looks like he could motivate people in a Marine drill instructor way.

  6. Big hire, good hire. I like the 60-10 coaching record. Winners win.

    Linebackers at SC were probably the biggest problem on defense. I wonder if guys like Raesjon and Tackett can be coached up, or if they will be replaced? I wonder if this guy can turn Gentry into an incredible player in the middle? I have to imagine that Gentry is being told he needs to gain at least 20 lbs this year if he wants to see the field.

    Defensive line coaching or secondary coach next?

      1. I think Henson is staying because he has a good young group of players he will develop into a decent line. He really messed up the transfers this year by moving them around, but he might not have had a choice. Something misfired with Tarquin and Jarrett.

        I am sure Kiel is staying and pretty sure Simmons is staying. Inside receivers coach might be the guy to go.

    2. If you look at Matt Entz record as a DC(2014-2018) while at NDSU(as a defensive co-ordinator, not HC), you might wonder why they didn’t hire him as DC. Look at NDSU’s record during those 5 years when he was DC. They didn’t give up that many points. From 2014-2018 they gave up an average of 13.8, 14.6, 16.6, 11.6 and 11.9 points per game.

  8. Does Entz maybe act as special teams coordinator too? If Riley refuses to hire a special teams coordinator, Entz would be the perfect guy to take that on. Could be a way for a tough-nosed guy to build young players into winners, who then get more playing time on defense or offense.

    I really like this hire. The combo of D’Anton and Entz is looking pretty interesting, not a sure thing, but definitely very aggressive hires here.
