Morning Buzz: Is Being Linebackers’ Coach At USC Better Than Head Coach At NDSU?

Why would Matt Entz leave a head-coaching job at North Dakota State to become an assistant at USC?

At first glance, it’s a little weird when you look at Entz’s two predecessors: Craig Bohl left North Dakota State to become head coach at Wyoming; Chris Klieman left to become head coach at Kansas State.

First, Entz isn’t getting head-coaching offers like that. He might have felt like his career wasn’t going anywhere despite his success at NDSU.

Second, going to a marquee program like USC sets him up to be a defensive coordinator somewhere, maybe even for the Trojans if D’Anton Lynn makes a quick exit.

Third, his salary was probably tripled.

Fourth, it’s a great situation to walk into as he tries to fill the small shoes of the previous staff. Entz is coming to a shambolic defense. Whatever he does will likely be better than what happened the previous two seasons.

He’s coached Illinois State; Wayne State, Winona State; Northern Iowa; Western Illinois and North Dakota State. USC is a dream to someone with that background.

Finally, this is actually not completely unprecedented. In 2012, Scottie Hazelton left as North Dakota State defensive coordinator to become linebackers coach at USC.

Hazelton left after one season and was most recently defensive coordinator at Michigan State from 2020-23. Entz probably would love a job like that.

  1. I would place “probably had his salary tripled” near the top of those reasons to leave dear old North Dakota State as well as getting a foothold in with a Big-10 team

Wrong. She’s so clueless, she denies that simple fact. So she would never ask herself that question. To each poster, she says “It’s only YOU who feels this way.” (She says that to a LOT of people. LMAO)

  2. Matt Entz is 51 years old, if he was such a hot candidate then why was he still at NDSU ? What influence is he suppose to bring as a position coach ? As usual the chain of command is different from any of the top programs , which is why USC has been who they’ve been for over a decade

  3. He was making close to $400K at NDSU.

I’ve seen his teams play a few times, tough, very good tackling, disciplined sound football. Also saw a video of Entz, think coach O without the Cajun accent.

Lynn and Entz preach TOUGH football. Now get a DL & DB coach who have the same mindset and can recruit and teach and special teams coach, oh and shit can the fucking Air Raid for a tough running attack and SC might actually be relevant again.

Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology. (Posting fraudulently as steveg) In Gabby’s world, men are not the protectors and providers for their families. You can insult their wives, daughters, and mothers with impunity. He has has no code of honor and therefore believes that nobody else should live by one. Although he admits that he will not back up his words with a boxing match, he has now dishonesty posted at least 10 times the exact same response about how he showed up at the gym in Miami. Is this suppose to be amusing? Please stop ruining our blog with repetitive copy and paste posts.

      9. I don’t know if there is any connection but this year LR took a step back to his days at ECU where he ran an offense more akin to the Mike Leach offenses that he learned under. His offense in 2023 was not the offense that he ran in his days at Oklahama.

      10. Yea, I have said many times I think KK might have been one of the biggest reasons the offense regressed this year. He is the devil on Riley’s shoulder, whispering air raid, backyard crap into his ear. Just a guess, I have no proof.

Results matter. KK is a proven loser (on the football field) at multiple places.

Hopefully, Cohen encourages Riley to look past friendship and shared background and hire someone on offense who will challenge Riley to grow his offensive mindset.

      1. Entz understands defensive football. When he was elevated to head coach at NDSU he needed a DC(because he was the previous DC). He hired a guy named David Braun. This year(2023) David Braun became HC of Northwestern and he took them from 1-11 last year(2022) to 7-5 this year and are going to a bowl game against Utah.

  4. It’s often said that a tough Defense is a successful Defense and that toughness comes from desire and passion. I was stunned when some player was asked if he watched the film of an embarrassing performance. He said no. If you don’t have the desire to learn and develop your skills at reading keys, then the odds of improving are very low. If you see the defensive backs in the NFL, they react very quickly to running plays and short passes. Yeah, they still get burned deep because of the speed of the receivers, but they come up on the ball carrier very quickly. College has lots of world class speed at the receiver position, so reading the keys and reacting quickly is essential. Hopefully, our players will get better at this. I think these coaches are going to be excellent

    1. After the losses to Utah and Oregon [and the attendant criticism of Grinch and his players], USC defensive players started getting surly with the beat reporters. I guess they had the mistaken notion the NFL would be impressed if they showed disdain for game prep.

    2. I said it before, I think Riley is only at USC for a couple years, but he needs to turn around the team and make it a winner. He wants to be in the NFL. D’Anton wants to be a head coach and Entz wants to move up to DC, either at USC or elsewhere.

This is what we want – real motivation to do whatever it takes to succeed.

That Vanderbilt transfer is a nice addition. Very versatile. They still need a bigger body in the middle.

    3. Neither D’Anton nor Entz have any significant recruiting experience and contacts. But D’Anton can talk about NFL experience and grooming kids for the league and Entz can probably talk player development and winning championships – both sorely lacking in the current defensive staff.

    1. Ha! I have “an exact” story for you. I collect the drawings of certain 20th century graphic artists. When I lived in Oakland, an L. A. art dealer told me he had some drawings by an artist he knew I liked. I asked if the drawings were the ones done by the artist when he was living in Spain. The dealer said “yes, the ones he did in Spain.” I asked him if he was absolutely positive cuz I really didn’t want to go all the way to L. A. to find out the drawings weren’t the ones done in Spain. The dealer said ‘no worries!” When I got to his house to see the drawings from Spain he said “Well, I don’t have those EXACT drawings.”

        Bob Porter: Da-uh? Space out?

Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

      2. SoCal,
When I worked at the L. A. Mayor’s Office in the 70’s, my buddy and I would put our coats over our chairs [kinda like those cowboy movies where they put pillows under the covers to fool the bad guys] and go play tennis in Marina Del Rey for the middle part of the day….
…but that’s nothing compared to L. A. Superior Court Judges….they put in about an hour of real court time a day….
