USC Notes: A Top Coach Must Still Be Brought In

I’ll keep beating this drum: If USC doesn’t address the secondary, it won’t matter that it hired a new linebackers coach, etc. Donte Williams is in Georgia today recruiting.

Here’s something to also consider: UCLA’s defense got a lot of praise this season but its cornerbacks were not fundamentally sound. That’s something opposing coaches say.

So it is vital USC hires a top coach for this area.

  • USC guard Isaiah Collier is shooting 67 percent on free throws and 32 percent on 3-pointers. He was 5 for 12 on free throws against Long Beach State.

Remember, Andy Enfield was a shooting guru and was hired by the Milwaukee Bucks as a shooting coach.

  1. Donte is next on the chopping block and Tua isn’t far behind.

And anyone here think Entz will be the DC is a year and probably calling the defense this year ?

Lynn is a coach that 10 months ago said………………
He knew nothing about the college game.
That the hash marks confused him.
    Didn’t know how practice worked.
    Didn’t know anything about recruiting.
Said just 2 months ago that he was still learning how to call plays on defense.
Said just recently that he doesn’t have a scheme.
Said he got a phone call out of the blue when ucla offered him the DC job, wasn’t even looking for a new job.

    1. Scary isn’t it, this choosing of unknown coaches with little experience such as the ‘Scla’ guy.

The offensive formula today seems to be 150 yards rushing
and 300 passing which means guarding the pass play is 2/3 of a defense and the secondary ‘Neons’ are very rare

      1. Correct, John. USC got something like 340 in the air on average and 140 on the ground. And a good portion of USC’s 140 usually came from ONE big gainer.
[However, karma undervalues Lynn — he picked up the college game real quickly after leaving the Ravens]……

    2. so was the UCLA defense success just a matter of luck? was it players that were not good the previous year who happened to get better?

they had a weak schedule, which was part of it.

      1. Let’s put it this way: if UCLA had Grinch, their “weak” schedule would’ve gotten real hard, real fast…..

      2. Lynn is a good coach and so is Nua. And if Lynn decides to use USC as a stepping stone, they already have their next DC(Entz).

    3. Buddha: Lynn is a bright, young, energetic DC. None of your concerns are that bothersome.

After one season, he now knows the college game and college hash marks no longer confuse him. He developed a successful practice schedule last year and now knows more about college recruiting. He is always learning when it comes to schemes and how to call a defense. John Harbaugh saw something in him and recommended him for the UCLA job to his friend Chip Kelly.

    4. That know nothing fraud of a coach, ladies tights wearing clown Donte Williams should have been fired last year.

Actually that waste of money and space never should have been hired in the first place

Another fucking waste of money and space

  2. Wolfie just gave us some SC basketball news so the Trojans must have lost, and I was concerned with the freshman Collier’s shooting ability but few in college are NBA suitable, however he might get in with his ball handling skills

  3. ucla fans say Lynn just let the players play.

    ucla’s schedule was a JOKE

Is Lynn the answer, who knows but it’s pretty interesting and maybe telling that a seasoned DC and very successful head coach was hired just after Lynn was.

Both hires are a step in the right direction but Wolf is right, more coaches have to be canned

    1. That’s what I’d say if the only decent coach on an awful college football team quit and went to said team’s rival.

Hey how soon does Kelly bite into that 1st ‘Big Mac’ each morning…..8:10 am?

  4. The cry out for a new defensive back coach is ridiculous, if Lynn is a top defensive coordinator like Lincoln Riley claims he is, then he should be able to tweak Donte Williams teaching methods.

  5. Clearly, coaches were wrong on their assessments of players AND in being able to coach them up. Now the local reporters are printing that recruits (especially elite prospects) had an impression that SC coaches were immature – as if Lanning and his clown car crew was better.

Lynn is bringing some professionalism to say the least. Wolf, go freaking coach if you think your better than Williams, otherwise, let it go, Jesus.

    2. Riley finally realized that this was not the same as inheriting a franchise like at Oklahoma. He cant half-ass this anymore. So he is going to demand excellence. There are more changes to come.

Lynn sees that if he turns around USC defense and helps Riley make it a top team, his star will shoot right into a head coaching position in a couple years.

I wonder what Entz thinks about the returning linebackers? I imagine if he doesnt think they will be able to be coached up, we will see some of them hit the portal pretty soon, or would they wait until after the bowl game, so they can show improvement and then have a better chance at landing somewhere else.

      1. I’ve supported LR in just about everything he has done so far. I really think we have an outstanding head coach. But his one mistake(bringing back Grench or even bringing him to SC in the first place) has been such a major catastrophe that it overpowers all of his good and could be the end of his career. He came to SC with a great reputation. The players and fans believed in him. If you are going to succeed, your players must believe in you and you need the support of the fans also. That reputation has been damaged badly. If he is going to succeed, he must restore his reputation. I hope he succeeds because, fundamentally, he is an outstanding coach.

“I hope he succeeds because, fundamentally, he is an outstanding coach.”

Yeah, ‘Ol Mule Shoe is so outstanding it took him 5 years to figure out that Alex Grinch isn’t worth a shit.

Actually that clown couldn’t figure it out, he had to hear it from an entire fanbase and national media and then he still didn’t want to fire Grinch, USC A.D. Jen Cohen had to do it.

        Lincoln Riley is a joke!

      3. I know that all the Oklahoma people are today saying “we told you so” about LR. But that is not what they originally said when LR announced that he was going to SC. They called him a traitor. The complained about how SC had stolen their wonderful coach. He may, indeed, be a clown but that is not what the sooner people thought of him when he left.

      4. Who gives a fuck what Sooner people thought of Lincoln Riley when he left Oklahoma?

Seen enough of that clown to know he’s a clown, not good enough to be head coach at USC.

‘Ol Mule Shoe’s offense is overrated and has been shown to be completely shutdown by decent defenses. Oregon St. exposed Riley last year and UCLA exposed him this year, along with an average Notre Dame team as well.

Hell, last year a shit Colorado team stifled his gimmicky offense for an entire half and Colorado had shit players

  6. Today Alabama hired Mich’s LB coach. Yes, before their bowl championship game. Because thats what aggressive teams do.
Speculation that Harbaugh may still leave, despite contract.

Our needs are great. Until they are addressed, we can skip “portal watching.” OL, DL, secondary, strength, recruiting. etc, etc.

I know this is redundant but a great offensive mind is simply not enough. Please, Lincoln, help your pals find jobs, but more importantly to me, help USC return to excellence.

    1. LR needs to do the one thing that he doesn’t do well…….Get rid of Donte Williams and maybe some other coaches. He’s too loyal to his coaches. These guys don’t deserve loyalty when they are making close to or more than a million a year. With salaries like that if they are not getting the job done then it’s time to bring in someone else.
