USC Morning Buzz: An Underwhelming Transfer Portal (So Far)

To be honest, I’m a bit underwhelmed by some of the tailbacks USC is recruiting in the transfer portal, at least in relation to the past 2 seasons, when Travis Dye and MarShawn Lloyd were the top backs brought in via the portal.

Maybe he’s not the receiver USC wants in the backfield but it seems like Darwin Barlow could have been valuable next season to the offense. Barlow wasn’t given that impression before he left.

It’s still early but so far USC’s got work to do in the portal, especially on the offensive line and secondary. Lincoln Riley says the true freshmen offensive linemen will be game ready next season and he only needs one lineman. I disagree. Either way, Riley needs one really good lineman, at least. Did he get one “really good” lineman last season? The fanboys will say yes. I say no.

Riley also needs several good cornerbacks. USC is recruiting cornerback Upton Stout of Western Kentucky but Michigan is the current favorite.

  • Do you remember Ceyair Wright was ranked the nation’s No. 5 cornerback by Rivals in 2021? Either he got really poor coaching at USC or those rankings were off.
  • In the past 10 years, USC is 1-6 against the spread in bowl games according to BetMGM.
  • Texas QB Maalik Murphy, who went to Serra High School in Gardena, has entered the transfer portal. I’m not sure he makes USC better but the Trojans are being mentioned as a possible destination.

  1. Well good night the bowls don’t start until tomorrow evening – 4 alone for Friday. As such I’d say a lot of attention is focused on those upcoming games and/or preparing to bow out – I give you Maalik Murphy – starting qb for TX Longhorns is a ‘no go’ even though Texas is facing AL in the 1st round of the CFB 1st January in the Sugar Bowl….find something else to bellyache about – how about if Folt is cu from the same bolt of cloth as those three harpies that couldn’t condemn Muslim murderers when they smugly all echoed the talking points provided by MSNBC, NPR and the DNC in front of congress this past week.

        I’m hoping Riley has some great transfers lined up & doesn’t want to announce them until after the Bowl Game on the 27th ….so as not to distract the current players. On the other hand, if he doesn’t have a Big Announcement to make before New Year’s —- you’re very justified in being worried about 2024 — there’s no way in hell his present team is ready to face LSU, Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington and Notre Dame….

      2. It’s too quiet in all areas. That’s because LR has lost a lot of credibility. What he needed to do was hit the road running in his first 2 years. The Washington coach did that. LR did it for the first year but because he failed to make the right decision about Grench, we are back to ground zero.
        It’s actually worse than that. We’re below zero now. When LR first came to SC he was one of the highest respected coaches in the nation. Players wanted to play for him and coaches wanted to coach with him. He does not have the same reputation today that he had when he first came here so we really are below zero.
        It’s going to be harder to recruit and harder to get great assistants. Having said that, I still think LR is an outstanding coach. I do think that he can repair his reputation and win big. I’m, at least, willing to give him a chance.
