Saturday Buzz: Wide Receivers Become Unwelcomed Problem

The exodus of wide receivers (Brenden Rice, Tahj Washington, Mario Williams, Michael Jackson) gives Lincoln Riley an excuse to focus on his favorite pastime: Recruiting skill players.

It wasn’t a mystery last season that USC struggled in the secondary and at offensive line. But the wide receiver group proved to be a massive disappointment based on pre-season expectations.

Now the question is whether there are enough receivers in the portal or high school that can come in and make an impact for USC next season?

Riley wouldn’t be in this predicament if he got more from his receivers. Jackson was seen as a player full of potential but seemed to get few opportunities. Riley wasted Dorian Singer, who still could enter the portal. I was never a fan of Williams but he got a lot of hype and didn’t get developed.

I’ve always viewed receivers coach Dennis Simmons as one of the adults in the room on this staff but his ability to improve the receivers needs to be scrutinized. He’s safe in his job because he is Lincoln’s right-hand man but things are not rosy at wide receiver.

USC has enough problems to worry about next season with receiver being at or near the top of the list.

    3. Zach Branch, Duce Robinson, Jakoki Lane, Makai Lemon, Pellum (freshman), Jordan (freshman) will be fine. The real problem was that USC stockpiled too much talent and then didnt consistently use the top guys so they develop a connection over a year. And maybe this year Dorian actually gets used properly. Maybe add one single receiver from the portal.

      Bigger need is to get the tight ends up to speed.

      Focus on developing that top talent. By the way, Jakobi might emerge as the biggest star in this group and Duce is no slouch.

      Honestly, Rice was sometimes great sometimes not. Taj was always consistent and will be missed. Mario never became SuperMario, way too many drops.

      They should fire Luke Huard and consolidate the receivers under one coach.

  2. Ever think part of the problem the ‘Receivers had in 2023 was Celeb-
    The receivers have completed their routes in 2-3 seconds
    but Celeb often would not throw the ball within that time
    and the receiver’s route is wasted.

    I see Moss as an improvement in that department and I also see Moss as not the gun-slinger this carpetbagger quarterback coming in is
    with a high rate of interceptions, game-killers

      3. When the offense was cranking they played with tempo and kept defenses off-balance. No reason for the continual substitution, allowing the defense to sub as well.

        There is something very wrong with the management of the offense last year. Did Caleb not listen to Riley? Is Riley listening to that loser Kingsbury? or is Riley the problem?

        I hope that Riley doesnt think that only the defense was a problem last year.

      4. The defense was the main problem last year. The only other problem I saw was the O-Line. The 2023 offense was not the same offense LR ran at Oklahoma. I can’t help wondering whether Kingsbury was part of the problem. That guy is a Leach protege. He doesn’t like to run the ball. As far as continual substitution is concerned…..it’s true especially on defense. Grench did not seem to have a set defense. A player like Gentry might play 60 plays one game and then play only 9 or 10 in the next game.

      5. So Cal – A checkdown is a short pass, usually to a running back when the receiver is not open. That is not a pre-snap read.

        Why in the fuck do they put a man in motion? To fucking “check” if it’s man or zone coverage. Then the QB “checks down ” to the play that best exploits the coverage weakness. Or if the QB senses pressure(blitz) he can “check down” to a play designed to neutralize the pressure. He can also “check down ” to a different blocking scheme that best handles the defensive front or “check down” to a different snap count.

    and he finally seems interested in the other half of football
    so with new defensive ‘gurus’ maybe it’s a start at least

  12. LR you must make sure that we develop these young receivers next year. Hopefully we will adapt to the Big strategy of running the ball to set up play action big plays you no. I hope you don’t think your going to be pass happy n forget about the run. Balance your offensive philosophy
