USC Replaces Donte Williams!

What a crazy day. USC is going to hire Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk as its secondary coach.

The timing of all this is fairly ridiculous. Donte Williams knew he was out. But Syracuse hired Georgia secondary coach Fran Brown as its head coach, which created an opening.

The first thought is why would Georgia, a real program, hire Williams? The key here is Georgia coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Will Muschamp can coach the secondary. Muschamp already handles the safeties at Georgia.

So Williams can recruit, which is what Georgia probably wanted.

I don’t know much about Belk. Houston’s pass efficiency defense ranked 115th nationally. But guess what? USC still just improved its secondary coaching because I’ve already detailed what it was like before.

The bottom line is the defensive coaching staff is better today than it was a week ago. Good enough to make a significant difference? Well, we’ll see.

  1. Seems odd to hire Belk if his team had a pass efficiency defense that placed 115th. The hire is a mystery at this point but you can only improve by replacing Donte. And Lynn can help coach the secondary.

    I wonder if he takes Domani Jackson with him to Georgia. Perhaps we can convince him to also take Korey Foreman and Bryson Shaw in a package deal.

        Gabby, oil is a commodity. A company can purchase a “futures” contract to buy it in the future at a set price. When the market price of oil dropped during the lockdowns, companies were selling their futures contracts for oil for $37 per barrel less than what they paid for it a few years earlier. Oil was never worth nothing. Use your common sense. Was gasoline ever worthless.

  7. It’s a positive trend in the right direction but the question is can he teach these DB to locate the ball while in the air, can he teach techniques that will match their lofty HS rankings. What I’m looking to see is can they teach DBs to stop giving up 10 yds easy completions. I want to see these DB drive on those short completions and come up n make the tackle instead of dipping their head n using their shoulder to get the man down. Time will tell

  9. Getting rid of a really good recruiting position coach to replace him with a not very good position coach is not an upgrade.

    1. posted too soon. the guy has a pretty great resume and again is taking a step down to come to USC. he was semifinalist for the Broyles award. this is a good hire.

      1. Williams was, indeed, a great recruiting coach. The book is still out on this new guy Belk. But if you believe stats, he was secondary coach at WVU in 2017,2018. They finished 99th and 102nd in the nation is pass defense. He was secondary coach at Houston in 2021,2022 and 2023. In 2021 Houston finished 16th in the nation in pass defense(which is great) but in 2022 and 2023, they finished 122nd and 118th in pass defense. Maybe they know something that I don’t know.

      2. parcelman – i think that a secondary can have bad stats if there is no pass rush as well, so development of players might be a more important metric.

        i just hope we dont lose recruits or players with Donte leaving. hopefully players like Domani see that he didnt really develop them.

  10. every action they take tells me Riley is trying to build a staff for when he leaves. If this works D’Anton will take over as head coach, Entz or Belk will take over as DC.

    I think these guys believe in their abilities.

    1. Game: I think Jen has her eye on Entz as the future head coach. He has the resume. D’Anton Lynn does not have his experience. So Riley is fired or leaves for the NFL in a few years and Lynn follows him as an NFL defensive coordinator and we are left with Entz as a head coach and Belk as his d coordinator.

I think we have options, but what seems clear to me is that Riley has already told Cohen that he is not loving the college football game because it is like having two jobs – recruiting and coaching. I think that the new staff might have even been told this is the situation and Riley might have a specific timeline – 2 years max.

        I just hope that KK is not sticking around. I dont trust that he is not part of the offensive problem last year. There are some guys that sound real smart, but never get results and I think KK fits in that bucket, but I’m not an expert on him, so maybe I’m wrong.

    1. I prefer it vastly when the posts concern football. I don’t know what happened but those defensive backs were the worst position group I’ve ever seen. I know that the receivers that teams have now all have world class speed and the fastest kids are only interested in playing offense. But Williams was the worst interim coach ever and the kids he was supposedly in charge of stunk. The reason they invented zone coverage schemes was to minimize the difference in athleticism. You get to position your defenders and give them up to a 25 yard head start. Still, the defense was terrible and it was a joke. UCLA’s defense was pretty good. Tonight they dismantled Boise State in the second half except for a couple of bad plays. They were far from perfect but they came up with key stops against an offensive team that lacked an experienced QB. Lynn and Entz are such an improvement, let’s hope we can get to the top of this new conference

    2. I hope he works out. What bothers me is that if you look at his resume, he has one really good year in 2021 where Houston finished 16th in the nation in pass defense. That’s not saying that much.Grench had one really good year at WSU where his defense finished about 18th in the nation and look how he turned out.

      5. I hear ya brother – that’s good stuff. I think what I forgot to mention was, considering who the coach was ABLE to recruit.I’m sure that at Houston, you don’t get the premium guys. Let’s hope he can do better here. But I agree – the jury’s still out on this coach.

      6. I don’t know that much about this guy to speak with authority. But I do know that both Georgia and Alabama wanted to hire him. He picked SC over both of those schools. He coached under Nick Saban and Kirby Smart when Smart was at Alabama. So both of the guys know what kind of a coach he is. If they were both going after him, I would think that he is a really good coach.
