Sunday Buzz: Matt Entz Gets Early Start at USC

New linebackers coach Matt Entz will start at USC sooner-than-he-wanted as North Dakota State lost to Montana, 31-29, in overtime at the FCS semifinals. If North Dakota State had won, Entz wouldn’t have started before Jan. 7.

  • USC received a commitment from Oregon State linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold on Saturday night. He was the Pac-12’s second-leading tackler this season. He had 107 tackles and 2 interceptions.

USC will be expected to now land his brother, Oregon State safety Akili Arnold. The brothers are visiting USC this weekend.

  • It’s just amazing what people are willing to believe. But many USC fans/fanboy media held similar views of Donte Williams four years ago.

  1. Riley 1. got the message and 2. understands what he needs to do to….the shame is this was not done a year ago but better now than later and, as one poster (forget who) stated – it seemed regardless of the skill of Williams it seemed a number of receivers were left scrambling waiting for a pass as Williams continued juking. Best to Williams and now perhaps this coming Autumn USC will present to its’ fans a ‘team’ rather than team plus 1.

    1. Sounds familiar, ‘soviet,’ and I might add that the receivers often did not seem open after the first play was aborted by Celeb,
it being difficult to get open a second time

      1. No need to call him ‘Maharishi’ but both Georgia and Alabama were going after him so he must be pretty good. We’ll see.

  2. The linebacker pick-up was first team all PAC 12. A tackling machine. Just what we need. Could not find much information on him but A&M recruited him hard out of the portal and that’s a good sign. Better than “my choices were SJSU or Nevada and then USC offered me and I was thrilled.”

      1. LR has to regain his reputation and SC has to start winning big. When they do that they will recruit at the same level as Bama and Georgia and then some.

  3. It’s amazing how many of these three star high school kids suddenly become four stars after they commit to USC, just amazing.

Nice LB get, too bad he’s a Sr and his bro is a Jr, but at least they can play.

Now, fire Tua, get a special teams coach and figure out that the Air Raid will NEVER win you anything and SC might be decent next season.

And Riley, you and your staff might want to go to SJ Bosco a little more often, same with Mater Dei.

      1. If you don’t make it to “The League”, at least you have a few million from college to fall back on….why blame the players? Blame the system that allowed this to happen in the first place

  4. Have to give a shout-out to that Donte Williams
how he’s carved out a nice coaching career for himself
based more on his recruiting skills than coaching-
Good luck Coach, and you looked good as SC’s head coach one year

    1. He sucked as a DB coach, sucked as a head coach and he’s been an above average recruiter, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out Donte

      1. Yes, there is that particular point-of-view as well Donte
but as a social figure it comes with the territory

  5. But you don’t have to be perfect to be part of the ‘Final-12’
the best 12 teams still standing,
which translates to probably 3 ‘Big-10’ teams qualifying
and fighting for the 3rd spot behind Ohio St and Michigan

    – Those sound like long odds for SC in 2024.
“Maybe next year,” or the year after next

  6. Does anybody know how football coaches are rated, how they are judged good or bad, it would seem to be a small difference in degree
between a bad coach and a good coach, I mean how much is involved?

  7. Consider just how easy is it to instill your ideas into an overall scheme when your immediate upper mgmt is bound and determined to have only one scheme imposed – it isn’t.

I watched a great video on ‘LA Sports Report’ where the commentator noted Grinch ‘holing up’ in the video room watching hours of recorded plays instead of going out and looking at what the kids were: 1. eating, 2. how much 3. their strength and conditioning regimen 4. considering different sets 5. a near replicant of Brandon Staley’s school of defensive genius but nothing short of confusing complexity.
Grinch was given an extension he never earned and as it got worse he expanded his crater even deeper – i.e. he was Staley convinced if only this happened or that player ‘saw’ what he ‘saw’…

In fairness to Grinch – I don’t believe anyone comes close to the arrogance and dweebie of Staley – he never should have been hired. Remember last Summer when he popped up at that presser smirking and stating ‘…I’m back!

    1. Confusing Complexity also described Paul Hackett’s offense. The guy had a brilliant football mind, but it just didn’t translate to college kids that have very limited practice time versus the NFL.

  8. Does Georgia have an opening on the basketball staff, and if so, can we package Enfield with Donte? Two f’n guys that can recruit but can’t coach worth a shit.

  9. – Just watched the highlights from a game between North Dakota St and Montana, and the fans were as excited as if it was the Super Bowl

Should I go for a jog or a swim? Or watch animal shit videos?
    That’s any easy one.
Okay, I’ve been watching shit videos for 2 hours now, luckily it doesn’t fuck my mind up. But do I post the giraffe shit video or the elephant shit video? I gotta watch them both a few more times to decide…..

Post your area code right now so I know it’s you…then call and I’ll pick up.
I’ll tell you all about how it’s possible to have more than one home, a feminist wife who kept her maiden name, forget your anniversary [and other stuff when you lead a busy life], fly back and forth between L. A. and Oakland and Maui on machines called airplanes….all kinds of stuff.
Call me. I’ll be so nice it’ll make you puke.

His so-called wife won’t even take his last name…..massive disrespect and honor……OR she just never married the coconut head, aka MG…….he’s trapped in another lie…..HAHA!,,

  11. Scooter,

With Entz free now, he can get here and breakdown film and see what is wrong and correct with the lber corp. From there he can recruit and get to know the area and high schools. There are two high schools down the 5 fwy that has a lot of talent and SC could use that. Get him working. Much work is needed to be done

    1. Why don’t you break down the film and give us your opinion? Have you watched any of the games…..the glaring problem is a lack of speed, especially closing, and not getting off blocks, which leads to chasing from behind……it’s really simple
