Report: Malachi Nelson To Transfer Portal

USC QB Malachi Nelson has entered the transfer portal according to Matt Zenitz of 247.

Perhaps Lincoln Riley’s recruitment of Will Howard, Cam Ward and Maalik Murphy turned Nelson off.

This is the world of college football today. Frankly, I wasn’t sure what his future was at USC after that disastrous spring football scrimmage performance. Apparently, he was injured or hindered by an injury.

But if he thought he was going to play next season, fat chance. Riley wants a transfer QB and Miller Moss looks like the backup. Unless Moss jumps into the portal.

Riley is feeling the heat right now. People inside USC feel it. So he isn’t going with an unproven QB unless he has no other options.

The bottom line is this is probably the right move for Nelson if he finds the right school.

      1. Mikayla Nelson is built like a ballerina…she’s too fragile.

That girl pulled herself out of the CIF-Semi-Final game vs Mater Dei because she was afraid.

The second she got hit early in the 2nd qtr. she faked an injury, went and sat on the bench.

That is not someone you want on your team.

      2. Mater Dei was going through his O-Line like a hot knife through butter in that game. Your O-Line has to at least slow the D-Line down. Those MD D-Linemen were practically taking the handoff.

  1. He was injured and get the impression he wasn’t in their plans. If we don’t get the K State QB, Miller Moss will be the starter next year and have the #1 player in the country, Julien Lewis, who might reclassify and come in 2025. Doubt he wants to be a backup. Hoping Moss doesn’t bounce. It’ll be interesting to see how Moss plays in bowl behind our shitty line.

  2. Good chance that means we are taking a QB out of the transfer portal. If we are getting a new QB and Moss is staying as backup, then Nelson wont want to be #3 on the depth chart. If Moss were leaving, I think Nelson would know that he is going to be a back-up wherever he goes, unless he is really improved and healthy.

    1. If you were coming off gnarly shoulder surgery (I’ve had it) would you be thrilled to get the opportunity to get murdered because your offensive line is so terrible?

  3. Malachi Nelson was the real-deal at Los Alamitos High School. Problem with staying at USC is Miller Moss has 2 years on him and knows LR’s offense. He would be waiting another year (at least) to start. He is probably good enough, injury or bad play in spring scrimmage aside, to start at any number of schools.

And so this is the age of the portal: as soon as anyone has a reason to transfer, they are gone. No one should begrudge Malachi his choice, and he will doubtless do well wherever he lands (likely just like Jaxon Dart at Mississippi, or even Kedon Slovis at Pitt/BYU).

The future in the NIL-dominated college football arena belongs to coaches who understand recruiting (and retention) comes in multiple flavors now: transfers, JCs, and high school (and likely now also in that order of importance)…

  4. Wow I don’t see how LR goes from here. Your prized recruit dashes on you. I guess if your not starting your freshman year or redshirt year I’m out of here, I don’t know but I heard Julian Lewis was transferring to MD? I don’t know just rumors.

  5. It is said there is no ‘I’ in ‘team,’ but don’t know if coaches even use that phrase today
as the Transfer Portal is all about “I” and “If you don’t play me I’m taking my ‘ball’ elsewhere”
