USC Morning Buzz: Remember The Joy From 2 Years Ago?

Remember when Lincoln Riley got hired at USC and everyone went nuts because he flipped Malachi Nelson and Raleek Brown from Oklahoma?

Two five-star prospects from Southern California! This was a sign Riley was a serious recruiter and could land the big-time local players. Well, Brown is now going to Arizona State and Nelson is supposedly entering the transfer portal.

Two years later, these five-star commitments didn’t really provide any indication of Riley’s recruiting ability, which has been fairly unimpressive on the high school front.

It does show how quickly things can unravel with a recruit. Riley mishandled Brown, moving him to slotback and the scout team. He practically ran him off the team.

Nelson is a different matter. He hadn’t proved himself yet. He had a bad spring game. He was hurt, apparently. So I don’t know how you could pacify him when he hasn’t demonstrated he is ready to play.

One thing that had to irk Nelson is USC recruiting Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy of Serra High School. Nelson was rated higher than Murphy in high school so the fact Riley was in any way interested in Murphy showed how little confidence there is in the quarterbacks at USC.

 The bottom line is you can’t get excited anymore about recruits. Even if someone signs, they can just leave after a year. So it’s fairly pointless to get excited.

  • USC has two scholarship QBs for the Holiday Bowl: Miller Moss and Jake Jensen. Wonder if Riley ever had this little depth before in his career at his beloved QB spot?
  • Kalolo Ta’aga, a three-star OL prospect from East Palo Alto, committed to USC over Utah, Cal and Arizona. The three-star parade for offensive linemen continues.

      And the EX USC volleyball asst, Jerritt Elliott, who got the head coaching job at Texas won his third NC yesterday, another fail by the athletic department.     Stanky was pure luck. Probably was a junior level staffer who made the call, since baseball is a non-revenue sport and Bohn(head) couldn’t be bothered at the time…

  4. Yeah, well the last two years Scott has been pretty right on. Other than his buddy Caleb Williams who has Riley brought into the program that’s worth a damn. It’s going to be real interesting next year if we end up around 500 or sub 500 if Riley is still a coach in 2025.

        I once worked as an intern for a law firm while still in law school. The attorneys were incredibly impressive – smart and hard working, except for one. She was a young, attractive, black women who was lazy and the quality of her work was well below the standard. Her papers were often reviewed and re-done several times. She was eventually fired and ended up working for a government agency that represented school districts. This women was appointed as LASC judge about 10 years ago. She did not have the qualifications with virtually no trial experience and no real knowledge of the rules of civil procedure or evidence but the Governor appointed her anyway because he wanted “a more diverse judiciary.” It has been in utter disaster with litigants with valid claims worth hundred of thousands of dollars having those claims dismissed or compromised because of her incompetent rulings while those with invalid claims that should be dismissed proceed to trial. In short, her incompetent decisions have financially ruined hundreds of people but what the heck, the Governor can feel good about the fact that we have more women of color on the bench.

  8. USC is down to two untested quarterbacks. The offensive line this year has been a disaster. Neither quarterback can scramble. Your now going to try some freshman on the offensive line who have little or no experience and Louisville has a pretty good defense. This could get ugly. Maybe we should be practicing the wildcat formation just in case we run out of quarterbacks.

  9. Great points. What do you do with an O-line that cannot pass block? Well, run block, of course! Plus its a perfect opportunity to test out the running game – which was heavily underutilized by LR/Caleb despite a well-over 6 yards/carry clip from all running backs combined (it really didn’t matter who ran the ball, by the way…). Louisville won’t have any game film on that! Plus it’s the best way to chew clock and avoid having a miserable defense on the field any longer than it needs to be.

    I can imagine our three remaining running backs would love the chance to get 10-20+ touches each in a bowl game. This is LR’s chance to actually show vision and leadership with the team he has, to bolster morale and get everyone in the mix!

    But watch what happens. Jensen is probably in by halftime with Moss taking a beating, and we throw 4 picks, en route to suffering a fate worse than the Chargers-Raiders game this past week…

    2. Would I like to keep Domani, yes. But with that being said he looks horrible. I’m sure coaching, or lack therof, has not helped but I’d be surprised if he can be coached-up to 5* expectations.

I don’t know whether it was the injury or a lack of development from the coaching staff or maybe he was just a sprinter who was always overrated as a football player. I guess another possibility was just Grench’s overly complex defense. He always looked confused out there. But whatever the case, he was a bust at USC.

  14. Eight out of 14 players in the transfer portal departing USC are offensive players, so this isnt about a defensive turnover. This is a problem with the whole team.

      1. I dont know if he has lost the whole team. The only loss to the transfer portal so far that i think is a real loss is Domani. I cant believe Domani thinks Donte will develop him. I wonder if Donte’s recruits also jump ship.

        Actually, for the 2024 recruiting class, Donte missed on alot of talent that should be at USC. Donte is great at the personal relationship, but players see that he isnt a great coach.

  15. Nelson leaving is not a problem at all. I think that he is not developing physically. Riley is learning that you dont take fragile QBs that have absolutely no leadership abilities. Nelson needs to find a program that really develops him. My guess is that he will never be a high level QB at the collegiate level.

  16. Going to the portal for potential “one hit wonders” has not worked out and never will. It doesn’t built consistency, loyalty and is killing recruiting for top So. Calf recruits. Who in their right mind would come to USC if the head coach keeps looking to the portal for his top players. The moron should quit going to the portal for other players that were coached by others get off his ass and coach which maybe he can’t. I know he can’t pick a decent staff.

  19. Very possible Raleek, Domani & Malachi were overrated.
    Raleek, other than running really fast didn’t show much.
    Domani, was absolutely terrible.
    Can’t believe Malachi is great & Riley doesn’t see it?
    If all these players leave and are more successful than the players that Riley replaces them with, then Scott and do his (super f’n tired) thing.

    2. Oneway: I watched Malachi in High School. He had a nice release and was very accurate but he was always a “project.” He didn’t have the body to play at the college level. Not a five star talent. It seems to me that Riley may have soured on him because he either did not put in the work to become great or is a head case who could not grasp the offense.

  20. I am so disappointed in the lack of class shown by Caleb Williams, selfishly abandoning his team mates with a chance to redeem thier season with a bowl win over Louisville. His carreer is more important than his team, maybe part of USC’s problem this year.
    I was so excited when Rikey brought Caleb in and started turning things aroundd But it became apparent Caleb was the only bright spot on the team.Really thought Riley was a good coach until you realize the offense got worse, the defense got really bad, special teams got worse, did not even need a punt return team, the opponents never punted. If every facet of your team gets worse, then you are a failure as a coach.
    The only other time USC shamed itself was the way they disrespected coach Orgeron, who was adored by players and fans alike. Pat hayden blew him off for the Sarkisian, Kiffin debacle, while Orgeron won a national championship at LSU. Now Caleb snubs his team tp go against a very good highly ranked team. Would have been an interesting matchup, but not now it will a hohum blowout with the trojans folding like a wet towell.

    1. A lot of hypocrisy out there. All the players are always talking about “THE BROTHERHOOD” and “I’ve got to support MY TROJAN BROTHERS” but push comes to shove, the only brother that is important is the “BROTHER” that they see when they look into the mirror. This young generation of americans is truly “the ME generation”.
