USC Notes: Tackett Curtis Enters Transfer Portal

Linebacker Tackett Curtis has entered the transfer portal, according to Luca Evans.

Lincoln Riley said Curtis was the best linebacker in the country from the Class of 2023, which was another of Riley’s ridiculous assertions. And the fanboy media ran with it. I flagged this as a problem in April.

Predictably, Curtis had an inconsistent-at-best freshman year and his playing time decreased as the season went on. In fact, it was a mystery to me why he was starting from Game 1 over more experienced linebackers.

Now the media who hyped Curtis will do their normal “who me?” routine and act like they never said a word.

  • Four-star defensive end Carlon Jones has committed to USC. He was previously committed to Nebraska.
  • Is there any chance some USC towel wavers can enter the transfer portal?
  • How long until Donte Williams shows up recruiting in a Georgia baseball jersey?

  2. Curtis was small. Too small. His game was on attacking and playing with his hair on fire. Unfortunately, he couldn’t disengage from blocks and he was easily washed out. So to compensate he had to play with his hair on fire, which force him to call for gaps, but also allowed defensives to continue to direct him through the gap then away from the play.

    Their is a new philosophy on defense and Curtis doesn’t fit.

    What is funny is reading all the fanbois who pay to post at Ryan’s Sandbox & Bouncy Castle, falling over themselves to anoint Curtis the Bestest LB Ever, then see them try to back track when it was clear he was a liability on defense.

    2. Things have a way in life of not ending up as intended. Riley has ended up really regressing USC football backward. College coaching is a club, not based on performance. The top coaches don’t make it a club.

  4. I believe Tackett didnt play linebacker in high school. Gentry is probably a starter and the Oregon recruit. Wonder if Raesjon will get played or transfer out.

      7. Maybe Gentry is also going to hit the portal. Tough to know how the new coaches view him. He is such an odd duck at linebacker, but I have to say that out of all the linebackers, he is the one I think could be great. Maybe they just told him that he needs to put on 20 more lbs if he ever wants to play in the NFL.

    2. Tackett is listed at 225, 6′ 2″. Is he really small? Is it that he had not put enough muscle on yet?

      If Tackett was a fraud, it is because he was pushed onto the field too soon by Odom. He might be great some day with the right S&C program and coaching. He looked completely lost most of the time, the problem was a lack of proper coaching.

      I think this is actually a loss for future years, but not for this coming year.

      Will Cobb and Shaw end up in the portal? I think Cobb is just too slow. Shaw is not physical enough.

      How many of these players are being told to leave and how many are just realizing that they will not be starters?

      1. Tackett didn’t play linebacker in high school. He is on a learning curve. At some point he will become a very good player. He showed flashes, just too many mistakes. I wish that he wasn’t transferring.

      2. When it came to shedding blocks the guy was on roller skates…..More weight and some added muscle would have really helped him this season. That’s why you rarely see a true freshman start at that position. Physical maturity is often lacking.

        Perhaps Grinch had him on information overload also, and he was thinking too much instead of reading and reacting.

      3. Thanks for making my point…..the majority of the plays in the clip show Tackett chasing from behind and not in the right position to square up and meet the ball carrier in the hole…..he looks more like a strong safety in the clip
