Suddenly, The Word “Develop” Is Important At USC

Lincoln Riley made some comments that stood out on Signing Day.

“They will develop here at USC. With this staff, it’s not a matter of if. It is going to happen.”

What players has USC developed? Have any receivers developed? Tailbacks? Offensive linemen? Cornerbacks? Linebackers?

This is the guy who turned USC into “Transfer Portal U.” and he’s talking about developing players? Maybe he means the new defensive coaches will develop someone. Because the offensive and old defensive coaches haven’t.

Then there was this comment.

“These guys were all dying to be USC Trojans,” Riley said.

Does anyone buy this stuff? With all the talk in the coaching grapevine about Riley being interested in the NFL, how much was he dying to be a Trojan? Let’s see how much these players are dying to be Trojans if they don’t get to play in the next couple years.

  1. Lincoln Riley talks big but walks small, his introduction press conferences after he was hired is an indication of that. He was laughed at by a couple of recruiting services yesterday, because of his lack of ability to take advantage of the hot bed of recruits in Southern California.

  2. Damn Scott: Riley is trying to do the right things to turn the program around. He fired the incompetent defensive coaches and hired some new ones that have a history of success. He acknowledged that they need to get bigger in the trenches and brought in some recruits with very large frames. He wants players who will stick it out for a few years while they develop. So what is your response? “Nobody is buying this.” C’mon, the guy is doing what he can to change the direction of the program. Give him some credit when he makes a positive move.

    1. Plow: Riley has been with Grinch for some six years. In only one year at Oklahoma was the defense at least respectable. So, why give him credit for firing Grinch now, after all the damage was done. And he wants players to be at SC for several years. Eureka! What a concept. First, the players are leaving in large part because of Riley and the lack of development. Next, LR is terrible at recruiting. he has trashed major local HS relationships like MD and Bosco. He brings in a herd of TP players that get the playing time. It’s all BS. I truely wish he would go elsewhere – he’s all talk and no action. He is paid over $10million a year and last year was 3 losses and this year probably 6, and heaven help us next year. All this for $10 million? Huh?

      1. I keep going back & forth on this stuff, too. I guess we’d all like to believe next season is gonna be different in spite of what we saw against Tulane, Notre Dame, Utah, Washington, Oregon….and especially UCLA….

Gabby: I didn’t use the term “white guy.” The CEO of Ocean Gate used the term white guy. I suppose that reading comprehension isn’t one of your strengths. But since you brought my wife into it, something that you would never do if we met face to face, let’s meet up Mr. keyboard tough guy or are you going to chickensh*t out like you normally do. I work out at a boxing gym in Pasadena, CA. Name a date and time and I will make a reservation.

  3. USC is crap right now and Scott Wolf is the happiest person in L. A. about that. If Nick Saban came to USC he would find a way to turn that into a negative. LIke I’ve said before, if Riley starts to win then he will complain about the way they are winning i.e. “they’re relying too much on transfers!” What a joke.

      1. MG: Gabby posting as Plow Horse again. It is not uncommon for someone who suffers from a severe Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), a mental illness, to try to find another identity once their false identity has been exposed and that happened when I demonstrated that Gabby was a pussy and a fraud. Mr. “let’s meet up” became Mr. “Chickenshit.” Now he wants to be known as me because he is too embarrassed to be known as Gabby. It would be embarrassing to be Gabby on this blog with all the past baggage of cowardice, lying, and stupidity.

  4. With only a very few exceptions (eg Buck Allen under EdO-Interim), there has been no player development at USC since Pete left (yes I know it doesn’t take a genius to be aware of this). This is a program where players like Leonard Williams, Sam Darnold, Adoree Jackson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, etc ad infinitum, have not developed or regressed, other than through individual efforts of will. Nothing in the past two seasons suggests reason to believe this will change due to Charles Nelson (Riley)…but the two new coaches very well might, and since they are both on defense, at least it should mean we won’t be entirely embarrassed next year (albeit the final record, as noted by several on this site, won’t be pretty).

  5. Scott Wolf, here’s a conundrum for you: DeCarlos Nicholson had more total tackles than Tackett Curtis in 2023. So should you bag on Riley for losing a former 4-star LB recruit or for recruiting a former juco CB? Maybe he came from Last Chance U!?

    2. I can’t be dogmatic about this because I have no proof. This statement is based on just watching his interviews. He looks to me like a quiet small town kid. I think that he was just homesick. Let’s see if he goes back to Louisiana. If what I say is true, then we would have lost him anyhow regardless of what happened.

  7. Scooter,

There has to be a big transformation with Riley. He is an offensive cordinator and no more. He must become a head coach and get on the kids and the coaches for not doing things the right way. This includes dressing as a team, lining up properly, knowing the snap count, knowing the plays, get rid of the me attitude, tucking in the shirts (that makes me mad), and holding the kids accountable for their mistakes by running laps or pushups.
