USC Morning Buzz: Lincoln Riley Isn’t A Special Prep Recruiter

Admit it, if Lincoln Riley sat in the Coliseum in his introductory press conference 2 years ago and said, “I promise after 2 seasons to deliver a high school recruiting class ranked No. 17 by 247 and No. 20 by Rivals,” fans would be howling.

Once again, this Signing Day demonstrated Riley’s not the greatest high school recruiter. For some reason, some fans still try to argue this point. They might point to last year’s No. 7 ranking by Rivals.

But since when is No. 7 a sign of great recruiting at USC? They will point to the seasons when Clay Helton was a lame duck as proof No. 7 is good.

They will conveniently forget USC was No. 3 in 2018; No. 6 in 2017; No. 10 in 2016; No. 1 in 2015; No. 10 in 2014; No. 8 in 2012; No. 4 in 2011; No. 1 in 2010 and No. 4 in 2009.

These are almost all post-Carroll era rankings when USC had what was considered average coaches.

Now USC has God’s gift to coaching and his $10 million a year salary and the Trojans are top 20. Or No. 7 last season, which is supposed to be cause for a party. That is about what USC is expected to do.

He’s doing nothing special as a high school recruiter.

To be fair, USC could move up in the rankings in February. It will do well in the transfer portal because Riley is better at recruiting transfers. That’s why I started this post saying Riley is not the greatest “high school recruiter.”

When Riley got hired, USC fans wouldn’t flinch if a pundit compared him to Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, etc. with his College Football Playoff appearances and 55-10 record. Well, those guys back it up in high school recruiting. Riley does not.

Oh, and he’s lost 8 games in 2 seasons at USC. With a bowl game approaching. He’s lost almost as many games as in his entire Oklahoma tenure.

        Every week the players got worse and worse. It was stunning just how clueless the defense was vs Washington. Go back and watch that game, the Huskies were almost in total disbelief at how bad and unprepared Grinch had the Ladies Of Troy. You will see the Huskies laughing at the missed tackles, some were complete whiff’s, others were where the Ladies of Troy made contact, but were run over or shrugged aside.

        No wonder they were always out of position, they couldn’t tackle for shit, why bother trying. LOL!

        You’ll see USC’s defensive backs giving zero effort of chasing down a RB once that RB got in their vicinity…they would slow up and look around to see who else was going to be fool enough to try and make a stop.

    3. Average recruiting classes never translate into winning seasons, it never has at USC. Ted Tollner was a lousy coach, but a great recruiter. Larry Smith was the complete opposite, and was fired after he ran out of Tollners players. Steve Sarkisian was a good recruiter, and Clay Helton was a bum after he ran out of Sarkisian’s recruits. No way are the Trojans prepared for the Big Ten with the players Lincoln Riley has brought to the program. Sports 247 mentioned in an article that Riley is surrounded by a hot bed of high school recruits, but hasn’t taken advantage of it since his arrival.

    1. The new defensive staff is going to be pretty solid as recruiters. I didnt like that Donte made recruiting about himself.

      Not sure why we failed with receivers this year. There is some issue with the receivers room. Maybe get rid of 2 coaches and just have one?

    After 7-years of Ton-o-Hel’ beating the tar and feathers out of
    Trojans’ enthusiasm, if Wiles had started say 6-6 there would not
    have been those unrealistic expectations in Year 2 in 2023.

    1. …and one more thing, if I may: Lincoln lost control of Caleb —- you could see it in their game interactions [where Caleb walked away from Lincoln scowling], you could see it in Caleb’s “Aren’t-I-Smart” post practice pressers and you definitely could see it in the changed calls [which weren’t coming from the sidelines —Caleb wasn’t even looking at the sidelines]. Players didn’t come to USC to subordinate themselves to Caleb….. and, eventually, they got tired of the screwed up power structure on offense.

  8. Riley seemed defensive at his press conference about his inability to close on the local kids. He really wanted the safety and linebacker from Bosco and the cornerback who flipped to Oregon. He kept emphasizing that recruiting had to be national and it was not necessarily good to have 15 California kids in a recruiting class. The problem moving forward is that we are going to continue to lose out on the 5 star kids unless we address the NIL disparity and I don’t believe that is Riley’s fault. Looking back it is amazing that we got Zachariah Branch and Duce Robinson last year. And this year’s class is not that bad, lots of big lineman who will need a few years to develop, a few promising edge rushers, and some cornerbacks and safeties. Could be a very good class in a few years if the lineman develop. The film on Marcellus Williams is very impressive. He looks better than Domani Jackson.

    2. There are a couple problems with Scott’s rant, but also some validity.

      One, a big part of the high school recruiting landscape is about NIL and USC has made some strange decision that it can be elite without offering high school students money. Stupid is as Carol Folt does. To not mention NIL is plain lame.

      I do think that the rankings are overrated. There are 5 star or high 4 star players that will cause havoc in the lockerroom and will never put in max effort. Tuli was a 3 star recruit. The numbers dont tell everything.

      Riley got alot of good players nationally. But yes, he does have a problem with the local kids. Maybe the new defensive staff can nurture those relationships.

      The best way to solve his problems is to develop the talent they get into great players in a great system. Focus on what hits the field, not on what comes in the door and the rest will follow.

    2. Pasadena: Unfortunately, many of the kids at MD and SJB have soured on USC. They looked at how Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, and Alabama have developed players from their past teams and those players became high draft choices and compared that to guys like Domani Jackson, Raleek Brown, CW Williams, Bru McCoy, JT Daniels, ect. and we come up short. Hopefully the development or lack thereof is going to change with this new defensive staff.

      4. Pasadena: I don’t think Riley is anywhere near Helton. I am interested to see how he adjusts the offense post Caleb. He has a lot of offensive weapons with Branch, Robinson, and Joyner. The offensive should still be able to score.

  14. We are all aware that LR is not much more than a OC. These failures in recruiting cannot be mitigated through then TP. There is a real difference between a player that came to SC out of HS. They are Trojans. These transfers are just looking for money and a better position for the NFL draft. The university means very little to them They have little connection to the student body. Or the academic programs. The prime example of this is Caleb Williams!

  15. What is Dan Lanning’s best win as Oregon coach? Who has Mike Norvell defeated? Scott Wolf is only happy when USC is struggling. Then, when they DO win, he compares what the team accomplish to what was done in the past! It’s one thing to tell the truth, but share both sides of the story! You want to beat the Michigans and Washingtons or out-recruit Oregon and Ohio St?

    You do realize that there are now three defensive coordinators on Riley’s staff? Only the tape will tell if there’s a difference.

    1. Agree Pigskin. USC is struggling but virtually every team that we face will have some problems. Washington, Oregon, and Ohio State are losing their quarterbacks and Michigan may lose their coach. I am not that impressed with Dan Lanning. He had more talent than Washington but lost to them twice. And Washington was not that impressive in the trenches. They beat us because our defense was confused, didn’t control the gaps or the edge, and could not tackle effectively. These are fixable problems with proper coaching. The thing that is most worrisome to me is the size of the Oregon and Michigan offensive lines. Our defense will have difficulty matching up and we may get pushed around.

  19. Howard is holding out for higher bids. It’s the cost of doing business. That’s how a crappy coach in Mario Cristobal can continue to convince anyone to play for his crappy program. Let’s be real, alot of USC recruits were overrated, just like Oregon is paying for overrated talent. Especially if the players continuously get hurt and don’t perform on a weekly basis. How many linemen from Mater Dei and St John’s Bosco have made it to the NFL? Or earned a second pro contract?

      1. I agree about Cristobal. Cristobal can’t coach. He never could. His record as a HC is 74-72. Without Oregon, he’s 39-59. It just goes to show….if you want to strengthen your resume as a football coach, just go to Oregon. At Oregon, you don’t need to have coaching ability to win games…..Oregon will buy you victories as well as great players and outstanding assistants.
