The UCLA To USC Pipeline Continues

USC’s raid on UCLA continues as Bruins cornerback John Humphrey just committed to the Trojans.

UCLA fans are probably fed up with D’Anton Lynn.

Now a caveat: Two Pac-12 coaches tell me the UCLA cornerbacks in general were awful last season. But USC needs corners and Humphrey is tall (6-2).

So Lincoln Riley said yesterday he will develop players. But in the meantime, USC will take two players from Oregon State, two from Mississippi State and two from UCLA.

  2. This is not the way to build a culture with transfer portal players when we should be developing the young players. I guess we will see Branch Pierce n whoever is left probably will transfer after spring because they are not ready to be starters if they keep getting transfer portal players way to go LR for building a culture.

  7. USC brought in 5 defensive backs on national signing day. These guys probably thought they had a reasonable chance of playing with USC’s depleted secondary. But then Riley brings in 4 defensive backs from the portal making the odds of early playing time slim to none. This doesn’t seem fair to the incoming players but I suppose that is the nature of our new portal reality.

      3. Pasadena: They now have much more than 9 defensive backs. The have at least 8 returning guys. Bullock, Branch, Pierce, Beavers, Smith, Brown, Covington, Figgins, Maxwell and probably more. My guess is the incoming freshman won’t get much of a look and the coaches will favor the more experienced transfers.

  14. i really think USC has some gems in this class that are underrated or just underdeveloped in high school. zandemela should be a 5 star, but they dont rank interior linemen high in the recruiting services. i cant imagine why the tight end Matthews isnt ranked higher and stephens is underrated.

    they overrank kids on teams like Mater Dei because they are better developed. this is how teams like Utah beat USC with lower ranked players – by identifying pure athletic talent and dedicated mindset and then coaching them up.

    they are missing a few high-end skill players in this class (QB, receivers, running back), but they have talent already on the roster in receiver and running back room. only issue is QB and I honestly hope MM shows us he is a baller in the bowl game and earns the spot next year. if Riley makes MM a star, he will burnish his rep as a QB whisperer.

    1. Pasadena: I recall that Lynn said that he wanted athletes who were flexible and could play multiple positions in a 3-4, 4-3, or 5-2 alignment. Maybe he intends to move some of the larger safeties like Pierce or Zion Branch or the dude from Mississippi done to linebacker in alignments. And he may move a few cornerbacks to safeties or nickels. But 17 defensive backs is a lot of competition. Some of them will likely leave the program.
