Discuss The USC-Louisville Game

Well, at least USC showed up and played hard.

The Holiday Bowl answered one question: Miller Moss earned an opportunity to be the starting QB next season. Like I said, give me a guy who understands the traditions and importance of rivalry games over a one-year rental.

Two other things going to next season:

  • This cannot be the USC running game. USC cannot go through the Big Ten schedule with an anemic running game. It’s OK against a bang-average team like Louisville with its slow corners but not in the Big Ten. Or vs. LSU and Notre Dame.
  • The defense had its moments but let Isaac Guerendo rush for a career-high 153 yards. This cannot continue. Remember other backs had their career-highs too. Yes, the defensive staff is changing and transfers are coming but USC’s defense can no longer allow these type of performances.

  1. Miller Moss is the starting QB for 2024. End of story. I posted a month ago questioning why an incoming freshman QB would want to go to USC when chances are you are going to be shoved to the side for the flavor of the month QB in the transfer portal. Moss’s responses to questions after the game also told me a lot about his character; it was always about hard work and the TEAM, not me and I. You can tell the players on the team believe in him as the leader of the team.
    USC still needs a major overhaul on the offensive and defensive lines, because Louisville kicked their asses on the offensive line. Although they provided Moss with time to throw, USC couldn’t run the ball or stop the run to save their sorry asses. This does not bode well for playing in the Big Ten. Hopefully CLR has learned a major lesson this season that you cannot have a championship level football program with a mercenary QB and a lack of focus and commitment on the offensive and defensive lines/linebackers.

      There is so much to unpack from that game.

      did the secondary learn how to tackle in just 2-3 weeks of coaching after Donte was fired? Is Donte that bad of a coach? glad he is at Georgia.

      Defense
      – i like the young guys, Prophet and Anthony Beavers, hope they stay and get coached up and start/play in either 2024 or 2025
      – the secondary will be fine with proper coaching
      – front seven is a mess, probably largely a coaching problem, but also a player issue.
      – linebackers are a player issue. i dont think cobb is tall enough, fast enough and can even tackle well enough to play. gentry is a huge question mark. mascarenas will play, who else? what about davis?
      – d line is a mess and how are they not getting production from bear, lucas and shelby? fire nua, fire odom, fire roy manning?

      key: USC needs a run defense

      Offense
      – like Miller Moss alot. it makes you wonder if Caleb is overrated. Moss gets the ball out on time, runs through progressions and finds the open receiver, throws downfield well. he doesnt throw as well off-platform.
      – receivers – this could be a special group. jakobi and duce could be phenoms. branch needs to learn to catch better and they need to design the right plays to get him the ball in space. kyron is a great possession receiver – a real 3rd down guy who will catch the ball with a guy draped all over him. makai lemon, the new taj. will they keep dorian? need to figure how to use him.
      – looking forward to a new crop of tight ends. will they get proper coaching?
      – o-line could be a big problem. is hansen a decent coach? will monheim stay? can Noa and the other young players develop?

      bottom line is the line of scrimmage needs to improve and this team could be very good.

  6. Bang average? They whipped Notre Dame! Played Florida St tough until the last two minutes! Toxic, silly and wrong. That game is of little use unless Riley gets a better performance next year. Pregnon should be pushed out to right tackle, Banuelos starts at center with Noa and Monheim(pay him Will Howard money to return) and get that dude from Houston to join the program. Elijah Page was refreshing at Left Tackle.

  13. SC played their best game of 2023, and their best q/b showed up to prove what a real ‘fight on’ trojan looks like. True through thick and thin, never giving up on his teammates. The defense also showed up for the look into next year. Big10 ball demands SC be able to run the ball,just like Louisville did to SC. The ‘O’ line protected Miller,but provided little running game until the very end. I thank God for this most unlikely win and the ending for Louisville with the halfback stumbling to the ground while wide open to end their final chance.
    Looking fwrd to spring ball with Miller fully in charge at q/b.

  15. The cornerbacks, Brown and Covington, would actually come up on the receiver after a short pass and make a quick tackle for a relatively small gain. Didn’t see much of that this year. Both cornerbacks played well. The safeties, Beavers and Smith, also tackled well. Beavers and Max Williams also forced fumbles. I think that was the biggest difference in this performance compared to others. Just basic fundamentals like tackling. Now if our edge rushers could only contain the edge we might have had a solid defensive performance.

    I was a little surprised that Riley didn’t play more underclassmen. I thought we would see more of Joyner running the ball. I thought Noa might replace Kingston but that didn’t happen. Would like to have seen more of Tre’Quon Fegens at cornerback and Pierce at safety. Why was Bryson Shaw and Max Williams playing when neither one will be there next year. And was disappointed that Braylan Shelby wasn’t playing more at rush end. He is the future of the program on the defensive side of the ball. UCLA was a good defense under Lynn last year because of Latu, their edge rusher, and we need Shelby to become Latu like.

      and being at the mercy of a running back is not a good look
      But some of the tackling by Prophet brought me to my feet
      and the Offensive-Line did what he had to do– protect Miller–
      and then it was ‘Miller Time’ with help from his acrobatic receivers,
      good thing too because the running game was a no-show
      but for one run

      Still, SC’s first victory since Cal, a long long time ago
      Tahj and Miller ‘Most’ said the entire team worked hard the past 6-weeks getting better, and it showed in this game, truly the Trojans

Louisville was a legitimate top 15 team and we beat them up. Now, we need to get ourselves a first rate running back and an experienced center and we’re off and running in 2024.

  25. It was Moss first start. He had no business playing that well. They had no business winning that game. They played way more zone and played hard throughout the game. Pregnon struggled on run (as well as Paige) because the linemen weren’t clean with their run setup to block and started reaching or leaning instead of engaging and blasting. Watch the game and see the difference between the two offensive lines. Brian Odom and Shaun Nua were smart. Mixing and matching linemen up threw off Lousiville enough. For the first time all season, the team played complete, complimentary football in all three facets. This should be an eye opener for the rest of college football. Riley is starting to understand that you don’t waste talent by not using it. The whole roster was utilized, even if it were for one play.

    Wolf is upset they won, clearly. His need to spread germs is pitiful and small minded. That Louisville team whupped Notre Dame and Duke, beat Miami and Georgia Tech. I took the points with USC but I had Lousiville winning because I knew they would run over USC but the turnovers (Alex Grinch was probably laughing) were the game changer and that was created by USC. Not luck.
