In Memoriam: C.R. Roberts

With 2023 coming to a close, let’s start remembering some of the Trojans who passed away this year.

C.R. Roberts, a USC fullback, is best remembered for the 1956 game vs. Texas when USC was told its African-American players could not stay at its Austin hotel.

USC coach Jess Hill refused to stay there and tried three different hotels before finding one that would accept the entire team. Roberts gained 251 yards in 12 carries with 3 TDs in USC’s 44-20 victory over an all-white Texas team. Roberts scored on runs of 73, 50 and 74 yards.

Roberts was pulled from the game early because of fears the Texas crowd would riot if he continued to dominate the Longhorns.

“I was upset that they didn’t want me down there,” Roberts said in a 2015 USC article for Black History Month. “Damn right, I had something to prove to them.”

I met Roberts five years ago at the Coliseum and you could tell he was just a genuinely nice guy.

He was a 200-pound running back in his senior year at Oceanside High School, where he rushed for 1,903 yards and accounted for 30 TD’s, including seven where he threw the TD pass.

He had games with 274, 331 and 317 yards. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry. He was also an Eagle Scout and thought about playing for Army before picking USC.

There wasn’t much dropoff at USC. His senior year, he averaged a team-best 6.5 yards per carry. He was on the USC track team and defeated future Olympic decathlon gold medalist Rafer Johnson in the long jump.

  1. I appreciated his speed. He was a vital part of the track team in the mid 50’s. He inspired me to run track and play football at USC. I was a freshman on the 1960 track team but was not quite good enough to skip Spring football practice. The McKeevers were so good, they could skip Spring ball.

  2. Over the last few years there has been one player for USC that came to play every game, giave 110%, never quit, always reliable, made some big catches, wish more players played with his tenacity…Taj Washington.

  5. I liked how ‘Most” stood in the pocket and occasionally rolled out;
    He had command of the offense as its leader based on practice performance, but when it really counted ‘Most’ made the most of it

        Going forward, if Caleb doesn’t start doing what you mention his NFL career is going to flonder. Pass protection breaks down quickly when the QB leaves the pocket and starts to improvise. The defensive foot-speed in the NFL is a lot different than what he saw in college.

  7. Same years as Jon Arnett,they were the original thunder and lightening. I will always remember listening to that game vs texas on the radio with my grandfather…like watching the Holiday Bowl last night,brings a big smile.
