Some Bad Holiday Bowl Takes

All it took was a USC bowl victory to come up with some horrendous takes.

Here are some of the worst:

  • Lincoln Riley changed the culture of the program in the past month.
  • The game proved Caleb Williams is a system quarterback.
  • Miller Moss beat a ranked team and Caleb Williams didn’t this season. Did Williams play any ranked teams as bad as Louisville?
  • It was the biggest win of the Riley era at USC. Hello? Remember the last-minute victory over UCLA? Or beating Notre Dame?
  • The secondary fixed its problems. Do people realize Louisville scored 6 points vs. Florida State and was at full strength at that game?
  • Meanwhile, former USC cornerback Domani Jackson attended Alabama’s Rose Bowl practice today. Former USC tight end Jude Wolfe has committed to San Diego State.

  1. Scott will continue to push his narrative that Louie lost the game more so than USC won the game. It claps his ass to give any credit that was due.

Riley was able not to lose the team from an effort viewpoint. He kept them engaged and enthusiastic for six weeks and it paid off with a win. A feel-good game to carry forward to the next season.

Next season’s success will depend on improvements in the trenches along both sides of the LOS.

  2. I’d say Utah wasn’t as good as their ranking, neither was ND who Louisville beat pretty handily.

The Rah Rah’s will always overblow anything positive. Moss was great but he made some iffy throws, all QB’s do, but he hasn’t exactly played much either. The defense was better, how could it get worse ? The DL coach needs to go, NOW so does Kliffy and the lines need to get bigger, period, and the LB’s need an upgrade.

The biggest take away was this, Moss made his reads and threw the ball, he didn’t stand there all day, he threw the ball QUICKLY. He also got to the LOS and ran the play, didn’t fuck around, didn’t make the OL stand there for 29 seconds in their stance, he ran the play that was called.

And, the team RESPECTS MILLER MOSS.

Dan Weber posted this, great take on last night

” No other single word encompasses what happened for this USC team in the Holiday Bowl Wednesday.

    Joy happened.

The joy of working hard, keeping your head down and your mouth shut — at least until the postgame celebration.

The joy of stepping up to the moment and, well, stepping up to the moment and making it yours.

The joy of knowing you could make it yours simply because of the way you’ve prepared the last six weeks.

The joy of watching a teammate – so obviously, clearly and undisputedly the leader – making it clear he was more than capable of stepping into the shoes of the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and making the position his on his first shot at it with nothing more than his play. And then his words.

And not just following those footsteps but doing it on his own, with his own signature, his own way, as a true Trojan, a USC guy his entire life. Without a thought that he could have done this sooner. Or should have. Or gone somewhere else. After all, that Magna Cum Laude degree in two-and-a-half years isn’t a bad beginning for a football career that’s about to take off.

But this wasn’t about him, Miller Moss said to everyone who tried to make it about his singular six-TD performance. This was about this USC team. And, of course it was — about both — Miller and his guys. ”

The rest of the article is behind a pay wall, but what I could read for free sums up last night pretty well.

Absolutely correct. As crazy as it sounds, I think if Caleb played against Louisville USC would have ended the season 7-6 rather than 8-5.

Last year Scott ran a column about which rising stars we thought would make a difference. I wrote about him and it’s all been accurate. I don’t think I used the Marv Goux pseudonym back then. He runs great routes, he’s got speed and he’s got hands! I am confident he will be a fine player in the NFL

      1. I don’t know if Moss will be better than Caleb, but I do think SC will be a better team. Under Miller we will be running LR’s offense. Under Caleb, we were quite often running Calebs offense because he would constantly change the play at the LOS.
But I do think Miller will be a great QB if he stays under LR for another 2 years….possibly another Heisman winner. He’s got a really strong arm who can make all the throws and he’s very smart so he can read defenses and after 2 years he knows this offense like the back of his hand. He’s accurate(more accurate than Caleb), He’s a dart thrower. He’s more focused than Caleb. Caleb was focused until he won the Heisman. At that point he was sidetracked by all the TV commercials and all the attention. Barring a major injury Miller will definitely play in the pros.

      2. He is a dart thrower, but when he needed to, showed a couple of beautiful “touch” passes that I don’t think I’ve ever seen from Caleb. He floated 2 or 3 right over the defenders into his receivers’ hands. It really was beautiful the way they hung in the air, ever so gently.

Hearing the commentator’s remark about us having 24 players either opting out of the game or in the portal was a shameful commentary on what NCAA football has become.

  3. I need evidence of who said such ridiculous things . . . or if these were some of the items that you, Mr. Wolf, were prepared to post to justify your germ-spreading journalism. Those 9 games in a row were brutal and it drained the team. This team wasn’t prepared to win against that schedule and paid a 7-5 record price. Enough with the fly-in-the-ointment crap and lets give credit where credit’s due. The seniors who played stepped it up for the program. Imagine if Riley took another approach and abandoned them for young unsure players?! It took them 12 games but they finally got the balance right!

By the way, they will face plenty of teams who will play the same style as Louisville played USC in the Holiday Bowl. They will also be as talented as Louisville was as well. Gotta say things don’t appear to be as bleak as you want them to be Mr. Wolf.

  4. I really don’t give a rat’s a$$ where Domani Jackson is spending his time. He’s no longer a Trojan. He was overrated and didn’t do squat while here. I agree with anyone saying that “we need players that want to be here”. You can try to develop anyone in a chosen field but if they aren’t up for the challenge then don’t let the door hit him in the a$$ when leaving. I’ve had plenty of bosses that were terrible and unable to develop anyone. That didn’t prevent me from succeeding.
Also, Scott didn’t you pick Louisville to win… so USC must have outplayed them.

  5. Has any I’ve been watching the OU/UA game. I’m convinced this SEC crew was sent to help transitioning OU win. I just watched 4 consecutive plays where an OU linemen has tackled an AZ d-lineman on his way to the QB with no call and all were obvious and infront of a ref. It’s almost laughable

    1. And now a phantom offensive PI call for off setting penalties. It would have been 1st and goal at the 1. The tight end was called for offensive PI and wasn’t within 3 yards or another player the whole play. This is fixed game
