If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

OK, let’s see how long it takes for new USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn to complete his coaching staff.

Their are expectations he will get rid of at least one more assistant but remember he can also bring in other coaches as analysts.

  • The attendance at the Holiday Bowl was 35,317. Now Petco Park has a smaller capacity than the old Qualcomm Stadium, but USC played before 55,789 in 2014 and 48,329 in 2015 in its two previous Holiday Bowl appearances.
  • The University of Michigan band has dedicated its Rose Parade performance to USC graduate Mike Gin, who served on the music committee for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. Gin, who was a Tournament of Roses member for 27 years, died unexpectedly Dec. 16 at a Kings game. He was 55.
  • USC dropped to 6-6 after losing to Oregon on Thursday night. A loss in Eugene isn’t so bad but the way Isaiah Collier hasn’t really developed has to be a concern considering he was the No. 1-ranked player in the nation.
  • Ex-USC cornerback Domani Jackson committed to Alabama on Thursday. So now we’ll see if coaching makes a difference for the former five-star prospect.
  • The USC-UCLA women’s basketball game Saturday is officially a sellout. Both teams are undefeated. Unfortunately, the game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
  • And now for some history:
  • This paragraph from the Daily Trojan in 1957 on who new football coach Don Clark might hire as his assistant coaches didn’t age well.

Bob McKay, assistant coach at Oregon, said he had been contacted but didn’t intend to move.”

Bob McKay? John McKay, or Johnny in those days, eventually did take the job despite his initial intentions. The same article said former USC player Marv Goux, who had helped Clark work on his home in Baldwin Hills, would probably get a job. Clark’s house, by the way, survived the Baldwin Hills dam disaster in 1963 that destroyed 277 houses.

Clark also considered but did not hire his friend, Anaheim High School legend Clare Van Hoorebeke, who won 16 Sunset League titles and 190 games for the Colonists.

  • It’s always interesting to see who went to different high schools in Southern California. USC football stars John Ferraro and Mike Henry went to Bell High School.
  • USC quarterback/assistant coach Craig Fertig, USC sprinter Foy Draper, USC basketball player/legendary coach Tex Winter and actress Tippi Hedren went Huntington Park High School.

Hedren did not go to USC but I want to run some wonderful photos of her with Neil, a 400-pound lion, who lived with her and her family and even slept in bed with them.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper and Frank Wycoff were members of the U.S. relay team at the 1936 Olympics. Draper and Wycoff were members of the USC track team. Metcalfe got his master’s degree at USC in 1939.

Draper is best known for winning a gold medal on the historic 1936 Olympics relay team and being a world-record holder in the 100-yard dash.

But what struck me more when I read about Draper on Thursday was this detail: He and two crew members died on Jan. 4, 1943 while he piloted an A-20 twin-engine attack bomber in The Battle of Kasserine Pass

The pass was a 2-mile-wide gap in the Grand Dorsal chain of the Atlas Mountains in Tunisia. This was the first campaign in which the American Army engaged the armed forces of Nazi Germany, commanded under General Erwin Rommel.

Draper was one of the 3,300 American troops killed or wounded in the battle. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, Tunisia.

One other factoid: Draper was USC senior class president.

Draper, of course, is not in the USC Hall of Fame. Just another of the many oversights.

  • You can’t really outdo USC’s athletic history when you consider Draper, Frank Wykoff and Ralph Metcalfe were all Trojans and members of the gold-medal winning 1936 Olympics relay team. And Jesse Owens competed against USC in a dual meet at the Coliseum.
  • Cynthia Watson was USC’s first African-American homecoming queen (Helen of Troy) in 1968. At the time, she was dating Stanford wide receiver Gene Washington and the pair eventually married.

In 1972, Sports Illustrated did a story on the wives of pro athletes and quoted Watson, whose husband was playing for the San Francisco 49ers with quarterback John Brodie.

“He and John Brodie make a great team. Gene and I both went to Brodie’s Scientology classes for a couple of sessions, but neither of us dig it too much,” she said. “Brodie recently attended a seminar in Los Angeles to ‘get clear.’ I don’t know what that means unless it means your bank account gets clear. That Scientology costs about $35 a session. I think I might dig Buddhism. It sounds cheaper than Scientology.”

In 1979, Watson was a substitute hostess on Wheel of Fortune.

Linda Murray Fuller
  • In 1968, Linda Murray Fuller became the first African-American song girl.

Can you name the player who led USC in minutes played in both 1976 and 1977?

Keep in mind there were players like Clay Matthews, Brad Budde, Pat Howell, Dennis Thurman, Randy Simmrin, Mosi Tatupu and Walt Underwood on those teams.

But the Trojan who was on the field the most those two seasons was tight end William Gay.

“Gay is the best blocking tight end I’ve ever seen,” USC coach John Robinson said.

Gay was an All-American in 1977.

“You know why I came here,” Gay said. “USC was the only university that wanted me.”

Like a lot of USC greats, Gay was a JC transfer. He went to Hoover High School in San Diego and transferred to San Diego City College, where he played outside linebacker in one season there.

He was a second round pick in the NFL Draft and traded to the Detroit Lions. He was converted to defensive end and enjoyed a successful career with the Lions from 1978-87.

In 2015, he was rated No. 89 in a list of top 100 Detroit Lions. He finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1988.

  2. Kasserine Pass was a disaster for the US, as a famous general once said, they weren’t battle ready but they were ready after Patton got hold of them.

Keith Moon sliced his arm open when the explosives went off, a piece of his cymbal slashed his arm, Townsend said he went deaf in his ear after that explosion.

William Gay was a damn good DE for the Lions.

Lynn has to purge the defense of the old coaches, all of them. Can he purge Kliffy too ?

Sorry Wolf but Enfield doesn’t get a pass for losing in Eugene, Cohen’s first fire and hire should be a new basketball coach, gap tooth SUCKS.

    1. Oh yeah – Gen. Lloyd Fredenhall – absolute disaster of a combat general – then again I never thought Omar Bradley was worth any ink either. Bradley looked like an ‘Omar’ and he was making sure the film ‘Patton’ had his critique per his ‘influence’ on Patton….he was alive until 1981…..looked like the ‘father’ of the current Bishop of Rome.

      1. Parts of the plot of “Patton” were taken from Gen. Omar Bradley’s World War II memoir, “A Soldier’s Story,” and 20th Century Fox hired Bradley to serve as the film’s senior technical adviser. Throughout the movie, Karl Malden’s Omar Bradley and George C. Scott’s Patton appear to be close friends. They were not.

Bradley not only knew Patton well, but he knew Patton well enough to dislike him, both personally and professionally, according to Patton biographer Carlo d’Este Patton felt the same way about Bradley. This might be why “Patton” the film tends to glorify Bradley more than it does Patton himself.

      2. One last [unpleasant] observation on this score: Eisenhower was envious of Patton’s abilities as a field commander….he got to show just how deep the envy went when he sent a film crew to film Patton dying on a gurney after his “accident” — no way should Patton have had a camera in his face on his last day on earth.

        Liked by 4 people

    2. According to General Patton, the aforementioned generals, including Montgomery, were more concerned with losing the war instead of winning it. If Eisenhower would’ve given Patton the green light in Europe like he should have, the war would have been over at least three months prior. Imagine how many lives and destruction to the cities would been saved? But they were all afraid of what Patton using the German Army and kicking the Russians out of Europe. Thus, he was assassinated. This was all apart of the overall plan for the post-war world that was engineered by Averill Harriman and Prescott Bush as it they financed the Military Industrial Complex, and for this plan to work you always need an enemy. I.E. The Soviet Union and China.

      1. Patton planned to “out” all the war profiteers after the war —he hated them. And he indicated as much to his wife in numerous wartime letters. His death paved the way for weapons suppliers to grow rich beyond their wildest dreams in post war America. There is no way he died in “an unfortunate & tragic accident.”

      3. Per your comment on Eisenhower’s envy – same with Marshall – a ‘politician’ instead of a real general. His treatment post-World War II ensured Mao’s victory by denying Chaing’s forces to annihilate them when the reds were cornered up in Manchuria and insisting on a cease fire. CCCP in moved immediately to train, equip (US arms no less) and then violate the cease fire while Marshall denied arms to Chaing. Yeah I know Chaing was this and that but the ‘reds’? No just a continuation of the demoncrats love affair with all things per the misunderstood ‘progressives’ aka ‘communists’.

      6. No federal appellate court has sent a case back to the district court with instructions to allow a full fledged evidentiary hearing on mail in fraud. I think there’s a misplaced feeling on the part of the federal judiciary that mail in ballot counting doesn’t constitute a “case or controversy” but a “political question.” The truth is poor signature verification combined with an increasingly massive mail in vote destroys the integrity of our election procedures. The federal courts aren’t doing their job.

      20. There is no widespread election fraud because the FBI/DOJ has not found election fraud nor convicted anyone of it. That statement is only meaningful if we have a non political FBI/DOJ that applies the laws equally regardless of political affiliation. Clearly, we do not. The department has been weaponized and there are numerous examples but here is one: (Wait for the last paragraph to see how the two groups were treated.)

How the FBI/DOJ treated the BLM riots vs. Jan 6th

        • 570 “protests” turned into violent riots in a 3 month period following the George Floyd incident. (per a study by Princeton University). The January 6 protest was less than one full day long.

        • 40 cities had to declare curfews in an attempt to control the arson and looting by BLM/Antifa. Jan 6, no curfew was necessary, it ended in one day.

        • Insurance companies are dealing with $2.5 billion in claims from the BLM/Antifa riots. The January 6 protest did $1.5 million in damage.

        • 35 people dead, 25 other gunshot victims, 2,000 police officers were injured. Jan 6: 1 non-rioting veteran Trump supporter was shot by police, and three other Trump supporters died of medical conditions. The one police officer who died also died of medical conditions.

        • Courthouses, government buildings, and various police stations attacked and burned (some rioters barred police station doors so the officers inside would die in the fire). Jan 6, no fires set.

        • Numerous stores looted, ATMs blown up and looted. (Jan 6, no looting of stores or ATMs took place.) and let’s not forget the “Autonomous Zones” which were the definition of “Insurrection”!

Really Gabby. Do we have a report of this thorough and detailed investigation into election fraud. What states/precincts were investigated? Who was interviewed under oath. Did anyone exam chain of custody complaints? Why were boxes carrying ballots unsealed? Why was there not a driver and an observer in trucks carrying ballots per the election rules? Why were trucks carrying ballots in unsealed boxes with one driver and no observer showing up in Detroit at 3:00 a.m. when the polls closed at 8:00 the previous day? How about signature verifications? Was any explanation given why the historical rejection rate of 3% suddenly declined to .3%. And how did Barr manage to pull off this investigation within a few weeks of the election because he made his statement of “no widespread election fraud” about 10 days after the election and then resigned and wrote a book about how he hated Trump. And the US attorney in Philadelphia stated that he asked Barr if he could investigate election fraud and Barr rejected his request.

      28. Consider a modern-day telling of Little Red Riding Hood. It would go something like this:
Once upon a time in a faraway country lived a little girl called Red Riding Hood. One day her mother asked her to take a basket of fruit to her grandmother who had been ill and lived alone in a cottage in the forest. It happened that a wolf overheard the conversation. He decided to take a shortcut to Grandmother’s house and get the goodies for himself.
The wolf killed the grandmother, then dressed in her nightgown and jumped into bed to await the little girl. When she arrived, he made several nasty suggestions and then tried to grab her. The child ran screaming from the cottage. The woodcutter working nearby heard her cries and rushed to the rescue. He killed the wolf with his ax, thereby saving Red Riding Hood’s life.
All the townspeople hurried to the scene and proclaimed the woodcutter a hero. But at the inquest, several facts emerged……
The wolf had never been advised of his rights.
The woodcutter had made no warning swings before striking the fatal blow.
The Civil Liberties Union stressed the point that although the act of eating Grandma may have been in bad taste, the wolf was only “doing his thing” and thus did not deserve the death penalty.
The SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) contended that the killing of Grandmother should be considered self defense since she was over 30 and therefore had worn out anti-environmental views about wolves.
The Attorney General contended that this was a case of excessive force since the wolve had no axe.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) accused the woodcutter of murdering an unarmed animal.

On the basis of these considerations it was decided there was no basis for the charges against the wolf. Moreover the woodcutter was indicted for unaggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Several nights later the woodcutter’s cottage was burned to the ground. And one year from the date of the incident at Grandma’s, the cottage was made a shrine for the wolf who had bled and died there “for the towns freedoms”.
All the village officials spoke at the dedication but it was Red Riding Hood who gave the most touching tribute. She said that while she had been selfishly grateful for the woodcutter’s intervention, she realized in retrospect that he had over-reacted. As she knelt and placed a wreath in honor of the brave wolf there wasn’t a dry eye in the whole forest. At the wolf’s funeral, while the pastor was speaking, there was a painting hanging a little above the head of the pastor that showed the wolf with a baseball cap on and a halo above his head. The painting said “well done good and faithful wolfie…enter into the joy and peace of the eternal happy hunting grounds”.

…the State Supreme Court said this was fine — “the process of the count is up to the Secretary of State….this court won’t substitute its predilections for those of state officials.”

  6. Taylor Mays spent a few weeks with the secondary and look how much the tackling and lines of attack improved, even with players like Prophet Brown who had not played much. I guess Scott was right about the horrible coaching of Donte.

Now we need to get great d-line coaching in place and we need a big guy in the middle, so Bear wont get double-teamed. Anthony Lucas is a player in danger of going the way of Korey Foreman if they dont figure out how to coach and use him.

Does anyone think Cobb and Gentry can be coached into effective linebackers? I say that both of them hit the portal based on the linebacker coach telling them that they dont fit the size, speed, weight of what he needs for that position. Hard to tell with Gentry whether coaching and conditioning could make him great. They were a definite weakness in the Bowl game – really no better than previous games. I think Cobb was the guy who missed 4 tackles in the game (out of a total 6).

Great to see the Trojans win, but now the serious rebuild begins. Pretty obvious that Henson will remain as o-line coach, he needs to develop his raw talent.

I wonder if Luke Huard is gone, consolidate under Simmons? The young receivers looked incredible. Honestly, if I were Riley I would not recruit a big receiver over the young guys, I would try to pull in more raw young talent with several years. I think that you ONLY take the one and done players when you have a gapping hole in your roster.

Riley needs to give the young talent a chance to develop and play, so they will stay on the roster.

    1. gametv — Here’s what I would like: No more talk about going after elite QBs or Receivers [we got everything we need —just grab some good 3 star guys as backups]. The whole emphasis on offense has to be landing an elite running back —Moss needs a better running game than Caleb got.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. MG – I dont think the problem is with the running backs, it is with the o-line. Do you not like the back they brought in through the portal?

Hopefully Henson can develop the players he brought in this past year. And dont forget Henson brought in the #1 interior offensive line prospect in the country this year. Replacing Dedich is probably the biggest issue for this coming year, we all seem to forget how important a center is.

    3. I would not get rid of Henson. This guy is only 48 years old and yet he has been an O-Line coach for 15 years. In those 15 years the running game under him has been solid with the exception of 3 years where it was mediocre. He’s a good recruiter too. He’s brought in 10 good O-Linemen in the last 2 years.

      Liked by 2 people

    4. Agree with you Game on the linebackers. Cobb is less than mediocre. He misses too many tackles and I don’t know what you do with Gentry. He is a playmaker but you can’t stop the run with a guy who is 40 pounds underweight. The Oregon State transfer will likely start and I suspect that Entz has his eye on bringing in another inside backer. (What happened to Raejon) Bring in a 330 pound nose tackle, maybe the guy from Houston, and perhaps the defensive tackle from Purdue who led the BIG in sacks, and we have the makings of a first rate defense. We don’t need Will Howard or Cam Ward.

  9. Scooter,

In terms of qb, SC needs one. However, go through the jc route and recruit one for next year. Riely has to rethink his way of recruiting. He needs 80-85% high school recruits, 5-9% transfer portals, and the rest in jc college kids. The transfer portal seems like a failure with the exception of Williams and his first year. Great write up today.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Agree Pasadena: The transfer portal should be used sparingly. You cannot rebuild an offensive line through the portal. And I like your idea of getting an extra quarterback from a junior college. From what I have read, Jake Jenson, a JC transfer is doing well as a backup to Miller Moss so just find another JC transfer to backup Jenson.

  10. Agree on the emphasis on recruiting, using the portal as an occasional luxury. On the JUCO transfer thing, that’s never a guarantee. So many guys look transcendent on tape and never equate at the 1 level. There’s exceptions (e.g. Keyshawn) but those are rare.
