USC Morning Buzz: Another Former All-American Weighs In On Annoying Practice

Another former USC All-American has weighed in to me on the strength coaches acting as towel wavers during games.

“That’s the type of tradition they have across the street (UCLA),” he said. “We don’t need that motivation.”

Maybe some of the “I don’t understand why people are upset about the towel wavers” crowd will understand this, but I doubt it. The people who don’t care usually have little understanding of USC’s tradition.

  1. Imagine getting accepted into a major D1 football program and your assignment is to waive a towel? LR’s concept of building an identity/unity to the team is deeply flawed. It’s embarrassing to have him as HC of USC football!

  2. ucla wore white shoes to look cool, SC wore black shoes and won.

ucla had that towel waving moron, SC had no one waving a towel and won

Stop with the phony bullshit and recruit some DL, LB’s and OL that can fucking play, stop recruiting 27 WR’s per class and embrace physical football and the outcomes of games will probably be a lot better.

    1. Budda,

Agree. I remember SC back in 73 wearing their black shoes and home uniform. Ugly was dancing in their white shoes with a rose in their mouth. An olineman told mckay, they think they will win with a knowledge that ugly had no shot. ugly lost and lost going to the rose bowl.

    2. SC’s punter wore white shoes at times during the season and came out with pink socks against Louisville.Somebody needs to have a talk with that idiot about the Trojan brand.

  3. Riley has addressed alot of deficiencies of his program, let’s hope he turns some attention to the overall game/event experience and relationships with media and alumni. Those are areas where we have not yet seen changes.

If this is the idea of the S&C coaches, they might need some turnover.

  4. Towel waving should be banned from the sport of college football.

    It’s just dumb.

  5. Towel waving is a stupid sideline distraction. Period. It’s so contrived and forced it actually nauseates USC veterans to see it on our sideline.

Some things are sacrosanct with USC football. Black cleats and white socks. Not putting names on jerseys (only the numbers). Not changing our helmet logo.

Oh sure, there may be seasons where ‘experiments’ occasionally happen – the striped sleeve jerseys from 1971-2001, the TT helmet from 1992, and cleats/socks variations, but the team always returns to true north. This is tradition – and that particular word has a strong meaning for USC football.

Bottom-line: the towel-wavers need to go. Period. They are not in our tradition. We need to find true north again. Towel wavers aren’t it. And we don’t “copy” or normalize ourselves anyone, because we simply don’t need to.

    1. Saban is no worse than the rest of the SEC. They have been cheating for a long time and getting away with it. Why do you think they have won 13 of the last 17 NC’s(not including this year) and only 4 out of the 25 years before that.
