USC Notes: Rough Week For Defensive Coordinators

The Seattle Times ran a story on Washington’s departure from the Pac-12 that included text messages from then-athletic director Jen Cohen and university president Ana Mari Cauce.

In this exchange, Cohen recommends Cauce use the Parker Executive Search firm instead of TurnkeyZRG to hire a new athletic director. You might recall Turnkey was the firm USC used to hire Mike Bohn. Oops.

  • Boise State is the favorite to land former USC QB Malachi Nelson per ESPN. This is a good move if Nelson starts. He would probably play there 1-2 years and if successful, transfer to another school. That’s how it works.
  • It’s a rough week for defensive coordinators. LSU fired Matt House earlier this week and Oklahoma fired Ted Roof today.

Brian Kelly actually fired four defensive coaches, which means the Tigers will essentially have a new staff when they face USC on Sept. 1. Guys like Kelly won’t mess around when they think their future might be at stake.

    1. I remember reading this link when it first posted over 2 yrs ago and note how this POF treated his assistants while he was HC at Cen. MI.

Kelly is in the hot seat – he’s following ‘3’ LSU head coaches that have won NCs in the past 20 yrs…..that’s why his back end is hurting.

      Nick Saban 2003
      Les Miles 2007
      Ed Orgeron 2019

      Kelly is a true POF!

      1. Well, with World War Nine temporarily halted between Gabby and So Cal & Plow Horse….it’s gonna take us all a while to regain our taste for measured, friendly exchanges…

      1. It worries me that Caleb hasn’t decided to declare for the NFL. He must be seriously thinking about coming back. Why would he wait so long to declare? If he decides to come back, that will cause a lot of problems. The team doesn’t want him to come back. The team, almost unanimously, wants Miller. If he comes back, that will give incentive for Miller to move on and he’ll be snatched up right away. The team will feel like they have been robbed of the QB they want. Will the offensive linemen support another year where they are running themselves ragged on every play trying to protect a QB who just doesn’t want to get rid of the ball until there is somebody open 75 yards down the field? Caleb…..we appreciate all you have done for the program but please……..move on.

      2. No worries, parcelman. Just [another] case of Caleb waiting too long to finish the play.

      3. Caleb gave the Bears the middle finger last week. He wants no part of the dumpster fire in Chicago. They have one of the worst O-lines in football.

  1. Wow, Boise State is a big downfall from USC. Maybe that is what he needs to play, but there is a good chance he doesnt succeed.

I wonder if anyone will touch Grinch. How can you justify that hire to your fan base? Maybe he should call Helton. That fan base is getting accustomed to losing.

    1. Boise State is a great place for him to go. With the way the transfer portal is right now, that’s probably the best thing to do……go to a school like Boise State and become a star at a smaller school where you are sure to play and then once you are a star then use the transfer portal to move up and make the big money

      1. I really question whether he is on a short path to become a star, or if he will be trapped in the Boise State level of play. If he needs to recover from past injury and make himself more physical, getting hit in games might not be the right choice at this point.

I’m very good with him moving on from USC.

      2. I’m not saying that he’s going to be a star. If he can get healthy I think that he will be good because I always thought he was a good QB but who knows for sure. All I am saying is that the way the transfer portal is nowadays you can waste your career going to a big football power because those schools no longer want to take the time to develope a QB. They just want to go into the portal and buy one. It just seems to me that the best way is to go to a smaller school like Boise State, make a name for yourself at that school and then cash in through the portal.

  2. That picture of ‘Christmas Grinch’ is so sad, remindful of the lyrics,
“It takes a worried man to sing a worried song”
But then again the man made enough money to live nicely
so what if he was a failure at his craft

    1. Says the only person whose mind goes to “sick” cuz Scott mentions someone’s attendance at a game. Stop already. Virtually the entire blog (other than your multiple posting names) has said YOU are the only one who’s a pervert & pedophile.

I don’t know of a video by anyone else announcing that it’s Friday, Dumbass!

I like our chances will Miller Moss

    1. I’m sure most here don’t give a hoot about the Golden Globes on Sunday. But maybe a note about any Trojans whose work will be up for an award?

We often watch this one because they have an open bar and attendees often have a few too many. It can be amusing.
