Saturday Buzz: Coaching Maneuvers Could Affect USC

Talking to pro and college coaches this week, the expectation is Jim Harbaugh will take the Raiders job if/when he goes to the NFL.

If the Michigan job opens up, the frontrunners would be LSU coach Brian Kelly and Washington coach Kalen DeBoer according to the coaches.

USC plays LSU, Michigan and Washington next season, so there would be an impact on the Trojans.

Meanwhile, Kelly hired Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker on Friday in a similar role at LSU. Baker will be paid $2.5 million per year.

  • Former USC athletic director Pat Haden attended the St. Francis-Crespi basketball game Friday night. It was a rare public sighting for Haden.
  • Former USC basketball player Keith Wilkinson, now the basketball coach JSerra High School, threw both his shoes on the court during Friday night’s game against Mater Dei because he was upset about the officiating.

“I have zero regrets. My mentor Tim Floyd would have thrown a chair,” Wilkinson told the Orange County Register. “As mad as people think I am, that was more to have my kids back.”

    1. Point of Order:
Coach Knight would be disappointed Keith didn’t follow the inner voice whispering, “shoes are kids’ stuff — go for the folding chair.”

  1. Strange, but I had just finished re-reading about how Rick Singer tried to rope Pat Haden into the Varsity Blues scandal but failed.
That was one smart thing Pat did since Singer is doing years in jail,
but the charity skimming he was head of is something he will go to the grave with, and too bad because other than that and his football coaches’ decisions he had quite the resume

    1. Besides leading USC to some of it’s greatest wins, Pat always seemed such a nice guy. Unfortunately he was a screw-up when it came to the coli renovation and his “charity”…..

      2. It’s amazing how people like Haden can get exposed for shit like this and nothing seems to happen to them, I guess having friends in high places helps. Maybe this story hastened his ” retirement ” from USC, who knows.

    2. I’m not impressed at all with Pat Haden. He was a little better than average QB. He was OK as a football analyst on TV. He was a terrible AD. As an AD he was a great “yes man”. He was somewhat “woke”. In Indiana the governor(Mike Pence at the time) got tired of seeing christians bakers and other christian business men and women get fined around $150,000 because they didn’t want to take on a project that went counter to their convictions. So he came up with a bill that said you couldn’t sue a christian businessperson because he refused to take on a project that didn’t portray marraige as only between and man and a woman. At that time Pat Haden had a meeting in Indianapolis with the NCAA and he refused to attend as long as they held it in the state of Indiana. He was very pro gay because his son was gay. To me, he was talented in a sport that gave him an education and opened doors which he went through and he played the game and did what he was told to do and made a lot of money. There are a lot of people like that. I’m not impressed.

      1. Good succinct assessment parcel per Haden. I’d forgotten his craven move re. the bill exempting bakeries from being forced to sell/bake for fruitopian clients…you’re right his son came ‘out’…I recall Bill Plaschke doing backflips for those pervs mocking Catholic nubs being honored by the Dodgers last Summer. Then, in the middle of the column Plaschke reveals his daughter was now a lesbian ergo ‘…let’s step on those who exhibit an awareness of that depraved behavior ultimately leads to….perdition…and applaud those engaging in such. Noth Haden and Plaschke abd their wives failed as parents. Haden has to wear that discovery of his seemingly indifference laden plundering of that foundation for the balance of his life. That is one weight I doubt any of us would want to get within a mile of. Better to be ousted, tried and made restitution this side of eternity than those who have never faced the consequences of their own criminal behavior as they face Oud Lord upon their demise. Sorry for Haden but yes, as you noted, a weak example of being given way too much w.o. having to have really worked for it.

      1. Either word works but what a shame both SC football legends
(and not bad in the pros either) had to spoil their Trojan images by being flops as athletic directors

    1. Question for karma: Do you think Pat Haden would have renewed Helton after the Holiday Bowl disaster? [Or was Swann the only person on God’s earth capable of making that move]?

      Liked by 2 people

      1. I’d say yes since he was Haden’s hire after an ” extensive search ” that wasn’t and he wouldn’t have wanted to go through that rigorous ordeal again. He would have spewed that Helton had inherited a tough situation, the program needs stability, he sees positives, the players like him, all the typical bullshit that came out of Haden’s mouth.

    2. I know that so many people disagree with me but I still say that Chris Petersen wanted the SC job. He interviewed twice for the job. In those 2 interviews, Haden made it clear to him that SC didn’t want him. He even went public after the first interview and said that Petersen didn’t impress him in the first interview. You don’t do that if you really want to hire a guy. After the interviews, Haden came out and said that Petersen just doesn’t “FIT” at SC. So Washington hired him. In his first year at Washington they played SC at the coliseum and Washington upset SC. After the game they were interviewing Petersen down on the field and the reporter asked him a question. His answer was…..”It’s all about “FIT”. That answer was sarcasm concerning the whole interviewing joke when he was interviewing for the SC job.

      1. Marv was a mess as a person, father, husband, human, guy was full of rage for some reason. His daughter seems to be normal, but I’m sure there is a lot of hurt from how Marv treated her.

Wonder why Smith’s daughter went off the rails ? not having him around? Who knows.

  2. I would much rather face a Brian Kelly led Michigan than a Kalen DaBoer led Mighigan. Kalen is a winner and at Michigan, he might become unstoppable.

    1. Think about where USC would be right now if Bohn hadn’t gone for the splashy hire and just gone up the road and hired a coach who knows physical football

  3. “Talking to pro and college coaches this week, the expectation is Jim Harbaugh will take the Raiders job if/when he goes to the NFL.”

Harbaugh left the NFL to take the Michigan job. I don’t see him leaving Michigan, his alma mater, to go to the Raiders. Harbaugh seems like a throw back to me, someone who has an authoritarian coaching style, and likes to run the ball, and that philosophy seems better suited to the college game.

  4. I cringe whenever Scott writes something like “Talking to pro and college coaches this week” about Harbaugh. Why would the subject of Harbaugh even come up?

The voices in Scott’s head are communicating fake news AGAIN. Jim’s recently hired Agent has been in negotiation talks for the last few days with the LA Chargers. The Raiders have their guy, Antonie Pierce.

Good or bad, MG, I am still here.

      1. Thank you…… I appreciate your comment, LJ.

FYI……I know you mentioned something about moving on from the CFP championship game. From a betting standpoint, the Huskies are a 4-point underdog as of this morning.

Looks like 80% of the betting money is being placed on the Huskies. The Books need Michigan to cover or they stand to lose millions. It’s obvious they have a very strong opinion of who is going to win and cover, and it’s not Washington
