USC Notes: It’s Coaching Hunting Season

A former USC coach texted me today and said, “I hear Lincoln Riley has really tried to get out of there (USC).”

Yes, but there has been nowhere to go.

We’ll see if an NFL team has interest in an 8-5 coach.

  • Isn’t it time to hear Kliff Kingbury’s name getting thrown around for jobs? He didn’t exactly make a huge impact at USC this season but there’s probably an NFL team that would hire him as an offensive coordinator.
  • USC offensive lineman Michael Tarquin is transferring to Oklahoma.

When you’re desperate for content just make shit up. Wolf seems to have a massive hard-on today for Riley. This reeks of a Page Six gossip column……pathetic!

    1. Gabby try to smile….
Also….when we criticize you, turn the other cheek. Don’t retaliate. It’s so childish. We say you’re a dope. You say we’re dopes. That’s not playing by Scott’s rules.
I didn’t make these rules up. I just abide by them….

      2. Read “Scott’s Rules for the New Year”, Gabby [posted on the southwest wall of Lincoln Riley’s Office]. I’ve been assigned to monitor all conversations on Inside USC, ensuring that “Gabby refrains from attacking people just cuz they criticize Joe Biden… or Gabby himself….even if Gabby considers the criticism unfounded or unfair.” I intend to take my assignment seriously [just as I did in 2023…and 2022… and, well, you know…] …

      3. It’s obvious Scott has no rules. I am trying to be civil with you and I have no problem going back to shitting in the blog. So tread lightly!

      4. Not the version to which I was referring. The bitch Joe wanted to have monitor all of us was sporting a red jacket and black & white blouse.

Still amazed they tried to pull that on us and are stupid enough to claim they’re all about freedom, democracy, etc. Their minions actually believe them.

  2. So after a mere 2-years Wiley “has really tried to get out of there (SC)”
which is a sentiment hard to believe that an ex-USC coach would have texted Wolfie, but stranger things have happened I suppose

  3. Why the heck is it taking Caleb so long to declare for the draft?

    1. He’s going to have a tough time if he decides to come back. Nobody wants him back….not the fans, not the players. I don’t even think Riley himself wants him back.

  4. Riley has a massive 110 million dollar contract and a 17 million dollar home overlooking the Pacific but desperately wants to leave. It would be nice if Wolf named a source for this bombshell rumor. But at least give us a reason why Riley wants to leave. Disappointed is the Cali lifestyle? Bored with college ball? Needs more NIL money to compete? Angry that he was forced to fire Grinch? Doesn’t want to play in the BIG10?

      1. Buddha: 110 million covers a lot of taxes. And Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach are beautiful communities with wonderful beaches.

      2. Torrance and Gardena may not be much to look at but the Japanese restaurants there are the best in the US outside Honolulu. My personal recommendation is Inaba.

      3. When I was in high school(in Carson) Gardena was a really nice town(when it was a Japanese town). Clean as a whistle. Part of Gardena still is mainly Japanese. But a whole lot of my best fiends went into the Gardena P.D. after high school. I can tell you for a fact that crime has skyrocked since the 80’s in Gardena.

      4. Buddha: I actually like Torrance and San Pedro. Enjoyed visiting Alpine Village particularly the deli and Octoberfest. When I used to drive to the Torrance Court the neighborhoods didn’t look so bad. And I had a few Slavic friends who lived in San Pedro. They absolutely loved their neighborhood and I enjoyed visiting them. You had multiple generations living on the same block. It was like half of the longshoreman/fisherman were related to each other.

  5. Let us dive into this a bit deeper but who would know Wiley “wants to get out of there” (SC) except one of his coaches and as MG pointed out that could only be Grinch, but why would Grinch want anything to do with Scottie when Scott tore him up while he was an SC coach?

  6. Ex-USC coach texted Scott Wolf….who? What ‘coach’ would be foolish enough to say that to a sports blogger that posts daily rumor and hearsay 3 – 4 times a day, and not expect blowback?

    1. It is suspicious that the Wolfman keeps getting these textes or e-mails from all of these former or present coaches. I would think that the majority of the coaches don’t even know who he is.

  7. Looking at Washington against Michigan they are showing that these former P12;teams need to play more physical football not this finesse passing attack works good from 20 to 20 but if u don’t have a physical running game it makes it harder to put in the end zone. LR pay attention on how you need to build your team for the Big. 330 pd lineman on both sides. Washington put up a good fight but not physical enough.

  8. When will people realize that old school physical football wins national championships- the team with the best running game and defense wins the big one time and time again. USC will never win another national championship until they run the ball effectively, play defense, and win the line of scrimmage. The so called Mike Leach Air Raid Offense is not the answer, and neither is Lincoln Riley folks he won’t change because he doesn’t know what real championship football is. Please take a look at the schedule next season it won’t be pretty in the Big 10 playing flag football against very physical teams.
It’s time to face reality- USC football is in big trouble a program that once owned the Rose Bowl might not see it again for a long time other than the UCLA game every other year.. Think about it has an Air Raid team based on mostly the passing game and no defense ever won a national championship. Based on the elite salary our head coach makes compared to others in college football our football program is a long way away from competing for a national title so something is definitely wrong, and it showed up in the recruiting this year, and importantly on the field.
I hope you all enjoyed tonights national championship game. Good defense wins championship as does a solid running game. John Mckay,
thanks for the memories. Pete Carroll thank you for coming here focusing on defense, the running game, and high school recruiting as key ingredients to rebuild the Trojan program. It’s a shame what built USC football is long forgotten now yet I saw a Michigan team tonight win a football game tonight the same way we use to.

    1. Good post – the contrast between the two preliminary games (MI vs AL & WA vs TX) was telling. The former was a smash mouth back and forth that was decided by an inept center for AL while the latter was the winner constantly in danger of losing very much akin what WA showed this year on its’ way to a perfect 13 – 0 reg season.

Last night the difference in size was graphic – MI were big and fast and got to Pemix repeatedly. Pemix reminded me a lot of Caleb Williams. Herbstreit’s commentary on his (Pemix) not seeing the better receiver was said over and over esp in the last quarter.

As said the ‘air raid’ offense does not win championships

      1. You have to run the ball. Running helps your passing game and passing helps your running game. One of the problems with our offense last year(as good as it was) was that the opponents all knew that our running game was not that good and also that Caleb refused to take the short stuff. What would be the incentive for the safeties to creep up if they knew that SC had the tendency to go after the deep stuff and ignore the rest?
