USC Notes: The Reason To Hire A 72-Year-Old Coach

Why would an NFL team want a 72-year-old coach like Pete Carroll or Bill Bellichick?

Because you want them to come in for 2-3 years and lay the foundation for the program and then hand it over to a younger coach.

The newspaper clipping below made the rounds Wednesday. Who hired Pete Carroll at North Carolina State? Montague Kiffin.

  • Who is Kliff Kingsbury trying to get hired by? My guess is he will try for an NFL offensive coordinator position.
  • Korey Foreman has signed an athletic financial aid agreement with Fresno State, making his transfer official.

  1. Scooter,

If SC was smart, bring Carroll back to over look the team. Get rid of Kingbury. Caroll could teach Riley how to recruit, why it is important to play defense, and get a run game going. After a few years, then Riley should be ramped up.

    1. Carroll has made it known he’d do anything for the opportunity to work under Carol Folt.

      1. So Cal,
Say what you want about Biden, you’re entitled to your opinion. Please find another forum to vent your grievances other than “InsideUSC”. You said the blog was a place to root for USC athletic programs. Instead of looking like a major hypocrite post content related to its intended purpose.

SoCal, I really can’t believe you attended USC? YOU must admit you have turned this blog into hating Biden for a long time since Wolf changed server. Talk Trojan football or any of their 19/20 teams competing in
        the NCAA..

    1. In 2001 Pete Carroll was hired because no one else Heritage Hall wanted would take the job. He brought new ideas, new energy, incredible recruiting skills, and most importantly big time success. But he was also a master of understanding USC athletic culture and traditions. He turned himself into the leader of the Trojan Family. His vision was now our vision. We loved him. And then he was gone.

The same Heritage Hall fraternity was still in charge of the athletic department. But they had no vision for the future, just a great memory of the past. So they hired their own to run the department, brought in coaches with ties to the program, and spent a decade running USC football into the ground. At the same time USC the academic institution achieved elite status.

And then USC was engulfed in scandals. Max Nikias stepped down. Older fans were told their season ticket loyalty meant nothing. Trojan Clubs were inexplicably shut down. The Trojan Family was outraged at and disengaged from USC. The fraternities disassociated. Heritage Hall was purged. Carol Folt was hired. She hired Mike Bohn and then he got fired. But before he did he hired Lincoln Riley.

USC has no forward looking vision for USC Football. We don’t really know who we are or who we are supposed to be. We only know what we used to be and the truth is we are not those Trojans anymore. Our recruiting networks have been demolished. Our Southern California connections worn out. And our loyal boosters replaced by NIL grifters.

      1. Ok I stated he slresurrected the profram but he still left a mess just like what John Robinson did when he also was awaiting sanctions and then split in 1981 to (wait for it) go to the NFL.

Pete’s better off in the NFL – coming back here would eventually morph as it did with Robinson….he knows the NFL today on 2024….he doesn’t know the college game.

  2. Scott: Because you want them to come in for 2-3 years and lay the foundation for the program and then hand it over to a younger coach.

So you want them to come in and put out a dumpster fire with the potential to butt heads with the GM. They are well past that point in their careers.

Some of the shit Scott posts is a real head-scratcher. He’s mastered the “baffle them with bullshit” approach……..pathetic!

      1. Ha! Even if you told Pete ahead of time, “the pass will get intercepted by Malcom Butler”, he still would have called that play,,,,

    1. Sorry but the reporter is a little lost. There is NO WAY that Monheim will be playing left tackle unless Paige is injured. Monheim will be at either right guard (his best position) or right tackle.

At right tackle, the question is whether Raymond has progressed. When he was being recruited he was a 3 star because he weighted 260lbs, by last year, he was 305 lbs 6′ 7″. So he has the size now, does he have the technique? He was a multi-sport athlete, so he probably is nimble for that size.

USC is probably a little crowded with guys who want to play at guard – Pregnon, Monheim, Noa, Banuelos – unless Banuelos can play center.

And Zandamela is the guy they hope can be the center, but that is alot to teach a guy as a freshman. And does he have the weight to play center as freshman?

And the X-factor guy is Hayden Treater. He is already 320lbs, 6’7″ and in great shape and quick. No way he is a 3 star athlete. Unfortunately, he doesnt come in until the fall.

This line is going to be real young, but maybe really talented, so it is a big question mark.

      1. I have read where Banuelos has put in the work at center, but that the walk-on now scholarship Killian O’Connor has worked himself into the lineup, not sure if a starter has been selected yet.

  4. Old coaches who are not relevant but Wolf thinks somebody is going to be dumb and hire men who always want their way and are reluctant to change. Incredible.

Klingsbury has to rebuild his reputation and show he can coach a winner. It’s called getting the run game together by actually coaching the line to block better. It took, Dedich, Voorhees and Neilon three years to learn how to block in an Air Raid offense. The lack of patience is exasperating.

      1. In spite of what he had to work with, Manning always seemed like one of the anchors on this coaching staff—particularly when Lincoln had that breakdow…. I mean that time Lincoln got pneumonia….

  5. (Sorry Wolf, but basketball news)– SC’s primary rival sucla may not win another game this year says a columnist and even sucla’s mighty coach says “We have no chance” if a certain sucla does not play better

Go SC. Maybe that’s 2 wins the Trojans can count on

  6. I am still amazed how many people on Social Media keep saying Pete cheated at USC and Saban ran a clean program. The NCAA sanctions occurred because he was 6-0 against the Big 10 with an average margin of 18, 4-0 against the SEC with an average margin of 30 and 8-1 against Notre Dame with an average in the 8 wins of 25. The ND loss was in 2021, meaning 18 straight wins against those three. Tough for those 3 to sell TV rights as “the Best College Football Has To Offer” when they were getting consistently annihilated by SC, especially when USC was not as dominate against the Big 12. USC was the 800 pound elephant and the NCAA Mafia when on a safari at the direction of the three mentioned. Not coincidentally, it worked. Look at who benefited revenue wise versus the Pac 12’s ultimate demise.

      1. That was simply the opening the NCAA needed to get their foot in the door. Should have ended up like Cam Newton as Auburn. A one-day investigation case closed. BTW, the “Rule” that Reggie’s parents broke was ILLEGAL. If Haden had done his job, it should have been challenged in court back in 2006.

      2. The Pete Carroll Dynasty was undone by Reggie’s Greed. Everyone else on the team seemed to be able to follow the rules that existed at the time but him. Then he fled and said zero while kids on SC teams 6 years later who did nothing wrong suffered for his selfishness. He deserves our scorn.
