USC Morning Buzz: Rules? What Rules?

This week, the National Labor Relations Board trial continued on the issue of whether USC football and basketball players should be considered employees.

I enjoy the unintended things that get said in these trials. Like on Tuesday, when USC executive senior associate AD Paul Perrier testified.

Perrier said the USC men’s basketball team has team “expectations” but not team rules, per Front Office Sports. He said there used to be written rules but they transitioned to verbal “expectations.”

This kind of sums up Andy Enfield, whose teams play with little discipline. Maybe that’s because running an offense is only an “expectation.” Remember the season with Kevin Porter Jr.? Was discipline only an “expectation” that year too?

I wish Mike Gillsepie were still alive. He would be rolling his eyes. Remember his four pages of rules?

  • USC constructed a large canopy/tent for its Spring New Student Convocation on Jan. 5 and this is the condition of the field today. The university said it will be off limits until early April. It was used for weekly farmers’ markets and concerts.

  1. Nobody can parse a subject quite like our Scottie–
Rules v expectations or punishments v accountability activities are proper synonyms

  2. Actually, euphemisms would be the more accurate description as in
“You have not met expectations” vs you broke the rules and
“You will be held accountable” vs you will be punished

In dealing with the “new” overly sensitive teenagers today, the softer approach is best

    1. We disagree on this one, John. While I appreciate where you’re coming from [oh, crap, I’m doing it myself], the softer approach isn’t producing great results.

      1. What do you two attorneys think of the testimony by the USC Athletic Department administrator this morning?

      1. I don’t know about that but I finally learned that if the subject is not life-threatening then agree as you disagree. I learned this tactic from the Gabby-So Cal feuds

      2. I don’t know about you, John ….but [when it comes to this blog] I’ve reached the conclusion Gabby/So Cal are the air we breathe, the crystal clear, lifegiving water in which we swim….

    1. I would have started the video with Lincoln Riley saying “we’re close….we’re closer than you think.”

  3. There might also be an “anti-establshment” element involved where the kids say “The heck with the rules I’m dressing the way I want”

  4. Truth is MG that Gabby-So Cal don’t agree on anything as they maintain their ‘sniper ways’ which probably is not good for their mental health

    1. Mine is fine, John. Now someone who makes things up left & right and worse, uses those same dumb lines for YEARS?! As many have said, she really needs help.

      1. Lord knows I’ve tried on more than one occasion. I’ve stated more than once that I actually feel bad for her. It’s obvious she’s miserable and feels the need to knock others, in order to feel better about herself. It’s really sad. It’s why MG takes pity on her and even Plow Horse, without that apology, will be civil with her when she’s civil with him. Pasadena & Steve do the same.

There are some very good hearted people here.

  5. Speaking of people to whom she’s been evil & heartless…

Hope you’re still lurking out there, Cal. It’s nothing short of disgusting the way she’s made light of your health.

      1. Remember, UCLA is the “Southern Branch” of the University of California so Cal alums really look down on Bruins. UCLA uses a variation of the Cal mascot, colors and even fight song music!
