USC Morning Buzz: Colleges Crossing Paths On Recruiting Trail

USC defensive coordintor D’Anton Lynn and Oregon coach Dan Lanning were at Bonita High School in La Verne on Tuesday. Oklahoma was also there.

Bonita features four-star linebacker Noah Mikhail, who has 34 scholarship offers. Lincoln Riley visited Bonita last week. Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi was there two weeks ago.

Nothing happened Tuesday but that doesn’t mean it never does.

In 2000, USC had just fired Paul Hackett but defensive line coach Ed Orgeron continued to recruit even though the Trojans were without a head coach. One day, Orgeron went to Valencia High School, where he just happened to run into UCLA assistant coach Gary Bernardi.
“What’s he doing here?” Bernardi told a Valencia coach within earshot of Orgeron. “Does he still have a job?”
Witnesses said Orgeron adopted his infamous glare and they thought he was going to need to be restrained following the comment.
Orgeron remained upset enough that following Pete Carroll’s hiring, he requested to recruit the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, so he could specifically go head-to-head with Bernardi.

      1. I think Wolf got it right, if there was another D1 coach there, Andy was 4th best, if there was another high school coach there, 5th best. If my old grade school basketball coach, who was also the janitor uh building maintenance man, was there, Andy might be better than he was, we ran two plays, the same one, to the right and left !

  2. Oregon as usual will out recruit USC in its own state. Steve Sarkisian is another example of a coach out recruiting Lincoln Riley. Let’s hope things change, and the Trojans staff keeps the top players at home

    1. Lets see, you go to Oregon which means money up front from Uncle Phil’s war chest, smoke weed and play video games all day and probably not go to class, what’s not to like for an 18 year old ?

      Oregon is flat out buying their roster, they are playing the NIL game and doing it well, if the other schools don’t want to play, that’s on them.

      Jen Cohen said in a recent interview that the NIL rules are probably going to change going forward, but I’d bet SC still sit’s on the sidelines no matter what.

      17. Hearing the head of the collective, it sounds like USC is somewhat closing the gap and will have more resources.

        Cohen’s interview didnt impress me. She sounds like a perfect bureaucrat – everything she says sounds good, but means nothing. Hopefully there is more substantial work going on behind the scenes.

        USC is in better shape for the 2025 recruiting season. I cant imagine that Henderson cant land a few big fish on the d-line/edge. There are a bunch of CA linebackers that are good. We dont have problems recruiting CB and safeties, so not worried there. With a top QB, I cant imagine we wont get top receivers. So it comes down to the o-line and whether Henson can land some big fish. Then throw in one running back that is elite and a tight end that is elite. Not saying it is guranteed, but having the best QB in the nation in 2025 will make things easier.

        I dont know if the wearesc recruiting service is any good, but it has USC listed as top 2 probabilities for 75% of the CA top 100 prospects. Oregon has commits from a CA QB that we dont want and one receiver that we probably do want. Some of the other players have Texas and Ohio State as top probabilities.

        With NIL money in play there is no program that will be able to put a fence around local recruits. Maybe Ohio State and Georgia can get close.

  3. Gary Bernardi also coached at USC under Larry Smith, he was also a WR’s & TE coach at Fountain Valley High School in the mid late 70’s when Edison was kicking the shit out of everyone. FV & Edison had some good games, don’t think FV ever came out on top.
