USC Morning Buzz: The QB Guru Doesn’t Always Know Best

The one area Lincoln Riley is known for is being a quarterback guru.

So it sounded surprising yesterday when he told the Pat McAfee Show, “There was a time at Oklahoma where we weren’t gonna take (Caleb Williams) and he said he would walk on.”

Say what?

Well, it turns out Oklahoma had a commitment from QB Brock Vandagriff and wasn’t going to take another quarterback. But then Vandagriff, who is from Georgia, decided he didn’t want to go to school so far from home. He eventually committed to Georgia.

That opened the door for Williams to get a scholarship offer from Oklahoma. And the rest, as they say, is history.

In retrospect, Riley didn’t look so smart. Vandagriff hasn’t made much impact and transferred to Kentucky while Williams turned out to be a star.

But sometimes being lucky is better than being good and Riley’s reputation only got enhanced by Vandagriff’s decision because Riley got another Heisman out of it.

      3. Your joke was funny, but not as funny as Dementia Joe yesterday in Las Vegas. Dementia Man said that right after he was elected in 2020 that he ran into Francois Mitterrand at the G7! Mitterrand has been dead since 1996.

        Anyone with any brains at all recognized his condition well before the last election. Many people are still in denial about it.

    Jadyn Walker 6-3 210 runs a 4.6 40, LB, WR also plays basketball, hopefully he flips.

    1. I’m not sure why they want him. He’s only a 3 star and what’s more important is that there are only 8 schools offering him and the only ones that are pretty good football schools are SC, Michigan State and Arizona State(also Toledo). Sounds like a guy who will end up a practice squad guy. I’d save that scholarship for the portal after spring practice

      1. In 1967, at South Bend, Ind., McKay wouldn’t bring his team onto the field until the Irish made their entrance. Two years earlier, the Trojans shivered in the cold while waiting for the Irish to take the field and were routed, 28-7.

        When the referee told the Trojans in their locker room they had to take the field, McKay was adamant, saying his team wouldn’t come out until Notre Dame did. The referee said if the Trojans weren’t on the field in five minutes he would call the game.

        “What does that mean?” McKay asked. The referee replied: “It means Notre Dame wins, 2-0, on a forfeit.”

        Replied McKay: “That would be the best damn deal we’ve ever gotten in this stadium.”

        After a series of questionable calls helped Notre Dame tie No. 1 USC 21-21 in 1968, McKay was asked about the officiating. He answered, “I’m not surprised. The referee is a fine Catholic fellow by the name of Patrick Murphy.”

    2. And yes, Smith got fucked over. SC WR caught a pass 2 feet in front on the yard maker for a 1st down, the ” official ” marked him behind the marker, ND got momentum and SC lost, couldn’t happen today with replay. Then there was the onside kick recovery that wasn’t, but really was.

      And lets not forget that fat fuck arrogant asshole Charlie Weis allowing the grass to get a foot long to slow SC down, think a SC player blew a knee out on that slippery shit.

      You go to ND knowing you’re going to get fucked over, that’s why beating them is so satisfying.

It’s early I know but I keep dreaming about that Michigan game and how in 2009 at Ohio St the fans gave SC the highest respect by screaming on every play and I had to stand because of them for 3-hours, and how I bet SC will get the highest respect from Mich in ’24, treating the game as if a playoff game. I got to be there
