USC Morning Buzz: Signing Day Arrives With A Bang/Thud

USC took three-star defensive end Ratumana Bulabalavu yesterday after he originally signed with Washington. Three-star linebacker Jadyn Walker is expected to sign with the Trojans today instead of Michigan State.

If it’s Wednesday, it must be a Lincoln Riley Signing Day.

Yes, these are exciting times. It used to be a big deal with ESPN camped outside in the middle of the night, waiting for the letters of intent to roll in to the football offices.

But with two Signing Days and the transfer portal, it’s lost a lot of luster. And Riley’s done little to make USC feel like Alabama, Georgia, Texas or Ohio State when it comes to recruiting.

  • Imagine being a UCLA fan. Instead of believing your coach is holed up in his office all night trying to lure recruits on Signing Day, he is interviewing with the Seattle Seahawks to become offensive coordinator.

I’m old enough to remember when UCLA fans worshipped athletic director Martin Jarmond.

So well said Scott – I ask all – think what awaits Bel-Air Tech – a football stadium 20+ miles from campus in the worst urban traffic in all the USA…..a ‘renovated’ basketball arena that didn’t have the foresight or finances or both – to install an ice rink and as noted, reading the potential departure of a head football coach whose best days are well past and is a doppelganger for the ‘before’ ad for ‘bariatric’ surgery.

  4. 2024 will be the biggest learning season that Lincoln Riley has ever had. He said there’s no need to change his philosophy going into the Big Ten… Really? No need to put an emphasis on being more physical, stronger, and lean towards running the ball more?

      1. He’s taken some steps.

He did revamp his defensive coaching staff, I’d bet the AD told him to do it, but his offensive staff remained the same aside from losing Kingsbury ( thankfully ). If he continues with his Air Raid philosophy and not running the ball, SC is doomed.

He kept his S&C coach, who has said that the players will get bigger, so either Riley or Grinch or both told him not to bulk them up, Grinch for sure to keep with his speed defense silliness.

I’m skeptical about Lynn, don’t know if he has the chops to be a top DC, maybe that’s why Belk ( former DC ) and Entz ( former DC ) were hired, lots of Co This and Co that on the defensive staff.

Time will tell how it all plays out. I think the defense will be MUCH improved but if the OL is still going to back peddle most of the game, well………………..

  5. So, with ESPN, FOX & Warner Bros getting together, are we now going to pay to watch all sports ? Is this the end of Wolf’s beloved DirecTV ? So little is known of how this will play out but I’d bet watching “free” sports is just about gone.

The typical early morning dick-ism from Wolf. All the fanboys want to kiss the ring. Coconut guy is first in line, no surprise

Was that before or after he was a coal miner? Before or after he got arrested trying to see Mandela? Before or after he was shot at in Iraq? Before of after he was appointed to the Naval Academy?

More than 800K have now died on his watch!

But idiots will make lame excuses for it, completely ignoring what Joe said about being a President for ALL Americans. The buck is supposed to stop with him. He was going to “take responsibility and not blame others”.

As I’ve stated, no different someone who isn’t on the USC football team or staff thinking her opinion of what they’re doing is going to make one bit of difference.

As much as he’s tried, Dementia Joe has not been successful at repealing the 1st Amendment. I’ll comment on the stupidity of people who voted for him any time I please.

    3. I still don’t know why they offered the Walker kid. The Bulabula kid is different. He’s only got 9 schools offering him but with the exception of Colorado State, they are all power five schools including Oregon, Utah and Washington. His stats are off the chart(60 sacks in 3 years) but I would challenge what kind of competition he was playing against. Army-Navy Academy is not exactly SJB or MD. But they did rate him a 4 star.

      2. True….There probably is not much out there. But after spring camp, that portal is going to open up again and I would think that there is going to be a lot of new people out there. Spring camp is where a lot of people decide “I need to get into a new environment”. We’ll probably lose people after spring camp.

    4. Alta Kalifornia is a One Party Democrat State overrun with illegal aliens, so own it. My car was hit by a drunk illegal alien who had stolen a SUV and he had hit three different cars before me and the CHPs refuse to go after him. The CHPs said the SUV was stolen from someone in Texas and that was that, even though witnesses followed him back to an apartment in Reseda. And you wonder why no one stopped in that lawless cesspool?

  8. In sports news, Utah’s coach ‘What-a-ham’ said he needs $7-million of NIL money to compete in the Big-12 with about 25% of that or $1-2 million for the quarterback position alone, and also acknowledged Ohio St had exended $12-mil NIL for its incoming roster

    Liked by 2 people

      1. Of course, but such money activities have not affected the NFL,
and based on last year’s college football interest the colleges will weather these NIL dynamics
(P.S- Is SC even in the NIL running?)

    1. I can tell you that what Wittingham needs is probably not going to happen. As someone who lived in Utah and had a kid go to the U, they do not have a ton of wealthy alums, some but not many, not many created huge mega companies, the Huntsman family will only give so much and a lot of what they give goes to the medical school and cancer center.
