USC Morning Buzz: An Underwhelming Hire

The expectations were high when Colorado was going to hire a new defensive coordinator (read below tweet).

But I was a bit underwhelmed when the Buffs hired Bengals secondary coach Robert Livingston.

Livingston might turn out great but like everything with Colorado, there was so much hype I expected a bigger name or established coordinator.

But this move makes sense. Why? Because Deion Sanders likes to meddle and he hired a young coach that he can influence and give advice to frequently. That wouldn’t happen if hired an old guy.

Here is one reason I had higher expectations.

  • Country music star Toby Keith died Monday at age 62. Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy recounted the time he met Keith.

“I talked to him for two hours. All he talked about was how much he hated Lincoln Riley for what he did to Oklahoma and (talked) college football non-stop. I think he grew up literally 100 yards from the Oklahoma stadium.”

  1. I love this Toby Keith Story…

You were 32 before you got a record deal, which was somewhat thanks to a flight attendant who gave your CD to a Mercury Records executive. Fast forward all these years later, and you are one of the highest paid entertainers in the world. So what’s that flight attendant doing now?

Her maiden name was Lori Hardin, but it’s Lori Payne now, she married Todd Payne. [They] own a Christian record label. I see her once in a while. She was a huge fan and had every song that I played from the stage. She probably got ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’ live from the stage before I got a record deal. So Harold Shedd, who was a vice president at Mercury, came on her flight, and he invited her and her friend to some kind of industry thing on a boat. They said, ‘Sure.’ He had been on her flight several times. So she went out there to this party. The only thing they had for music was a CD player. She looked in her purse — she had a bunch of my CDs, so she plugged them in, and after the end of the party, he said, ‘Who is this?’ And she said, ‘He’s a friend of mine from Oklahoma.’ He goes, ‘How do I meet this guy?’ Boom, he flew into Oklahoma City to find me.

  2. ” All he ( Keith ) talked about was how much he hated Lincoln Riley for what he did to Oklahoma. ”

So, was Keith mad that Riley left Oklahoma ?
That he ran Oklahoma into the ground while he was there ?
That Riley’s teams gave up a zillion points and lost every playoff game they played ?
    Some of the above ?
    All of the above ?

  3. LR left one job for what he thought was a better job. People do that everyday everywhere all over the world. That doesn’t exactly make him Adolph Hitler

    1. Maybe not Hitler…

  4. I totally respect an admire a person’s love and devotion to their team. A team is always something greater than yourself. A team also requires fans, and loyal fans are the best kind! Toby was loved and admired by millions and though I never had the good fortune to meet him, those who did were blessed with his warmth, generosity and kindness.

  5. Sounds as if Toby was incensed that Wiey left Oklahoma hanging, but I bet he changed his mind a couple of years later

    1. Well, he was a musician. I wouldn’t expect him to sing the same tune over & over again. Heck, we have to deal with that enough, from one sick individual on this blog.

      1. I know. I was yanking your chain.

I do know he had a minor riff with Natalie Maines and after watching a band mate lose his 2 year old little girl to cancer some years ago said “enough is enough”, as he recognized life was too short to hold on to such trivial things.

He wasn’t perfect. None of us are. But all appearances are that he gave to this world much more than he took. May he rest in peace.
