USC Sunday Buzz: More Memories Of Rod Sherman

Just a little more on former wide receiver Rod Sherman.

He wore No. 12 at USC. Any time you see a wide receiver wearing a number like that at USC, they arrived as a quarterback and got switched to wide receiver.

Two other examples are Hal Bedsole (19) and Bob Chandler (9). Sherman played QB at Muir and one season at UCLA. McKay thought Bedsole was too tall to play QB (6-5) and he moved Sherman because he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.8 seconds.

On his legendary TD reception against Notre Dame in 1964, Sherman went to Coach John McKay and said, “How about an 85-Z Delay?”

“Go ahead, try it,” McKay said.

“You could do those things with Coach McKay,” Sherman said. “Another coach might say, ‘Sit down and shut up, I’m running the team here!’ But not Coach McKay. He listened to you.”

  1. Hal Bedsole too tall to be a quarterback?– did McKay ever see him at Reseda high as he ran over us Birmingham pygmies as if we weren’t even there?

    1. IF Sam is called in to lead the game winning TD drive for S. F. it would silence his biggest critic, Mister Owns forever…..

  2. I wasn’t on the team in 1964, but I was in 1965. My recollection is the touchdown play was “84 Z delay”. Thanks.
