So This Means Pete Carroll Didn’t Want UCLA Job?

Pete Carroll’s name got thrown around for the UCLA job.

I never saw it as a realistic possibility.

UCLA couldn’t afford Carroll. It couldn’t afford his staff. It couldn’t pay off its exisiting staff, which Carroll would have fired.

Then there was the question whether Carroll even wants to coach college football. Does he want to recruit? Does he want to deal with NIL?

And does he want to ruin his USC legacy?

About the only reason I could see him taking a college job would be to provide jobs for his sons.

  • Jim Leonhard, who turned down the USC defensive coordinator job, accepted a job as defensive backs coach with the Denver Broncos.

Does that seem like a step up? He was previously the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin and turned down other offers to be defensive coordinator. It’s hard to figure out how coaches think these days. But being defensive coordinator at USC sounds better, especially because Lincoln Riley would probably have allowed him to not recruit if it was an issue.

      the nfl is a racist company. If the blacks get to sing, “their”, national anthem, then why doesn’t the nfl ackowledge and alllow the Indian, European, Asian, and South American, let alone the Mexcian National Anthem. I think the Mexicans could use, “Low Rider”, or “One Ton Tomatoe”, for their national anthem. For all of you political crap people (Gabbby), it is a joke about the Mexican Anthem.

  5. The college coach is 50% recruiting, which is a full time second job. There is no off-season. But if you are not that great at actual strategy and training, then you can try to win by being a better recruiter. In the age of NIL, the resources of the school also make a huge difference.

    The NFL draft is meant to achieve some level of parity, college recruiting is the ultimate way for certain colleges to build a durable advantage that cant be overcome by strategy or training.

  8. UCLA did not go after Kiffin because he’d cost too much money. He’s making what, $8 million (or more) now, 4 times what UCLA was paying Kelly.

    And the only reason Carroll would even think about going back into college coaching that makes sense to me is so that he could reach the minimum number of wins required to be in the college football HOF.

    I also think (based on not much of anything, actually) that the guy has a sentimental attachment to USC, because we gave him a chance when everyone else was assuming he was washed up and had nothing to offer. When he finally does decide he’s going to retire, I wonder if he might approach Jen Cohen and ask to be signed to a one day contract so he could retire as a Trojan.

    2. Regarding the HOF, you need a minimum of 10 years as a head coach, no less than 100 games coached, and a .600% or better win percentage. There is no stipulation on total wins
