Morning Buzz: USC Throws Money Before Big Ten Move, Will UCLA?

I never thought much of Chip Kelly at UCLA. The irony is Lincoln Riley needed an interception by Korey Foreman (of all people) to avoid being 0-2 against Kelly.

That little fact seems to escape the USC die-hards these days as both schools move to the Big Ten.

The difference between the crosstown rivals is that USC is willing to throw whatever money is necessary at the program to flourish. And it should as one of football’s blue bloods. UCLA should appreciate this because it was able to be USC’s wingman in the Big Ten move.

If you don’t like the term “wingman,” the UC Regents’ report said USC’s estimated Pac-12 TV value was 30 percent. The report said UCLA’s value was 10 percent.

  • Anyways, I asked several college coaches Monday what they heard about UCLA hiring DeShaun Foster.

“The word was he snuggled up to the athletic director,” one coach said. “He was the buffer between the athletic director and Chip Kelly. But his reward is he might get steamrolled next year in the Big Ten.”

Another coach offered his blueprint for the program going forward: “He needs to hire a great offensive coordinator. He needs to hire his own guys and revamp the defense. He was never an offensive coordinator. That’s a leap to head coach. The questions are: 1). Can he lead? 2.) Will he be organized?”

This being UCLA, there is (of course) a catch. Would the university even allow Foster to fire assistant coaches (and pay them off) if he wanted to? Some of them might have just gotten contract extensions before Kelly left.

  1. Some of your Posters, Wolf, have mentioned many times how Foreman may have saved Wiley from being 0-2 to Chimp

As for sucla’s problems I’ll leave that up to you to digest

  2. I always assumed bel-air tech was invited by the Big10 in fear the SEC would thus having a ‘presence’ in the LA market. It does give all the rest a chance to travel west out of the cold as well as an ‘easy’ game against the brewies every time.

  3. heard on a podcast that USC’s goal for the collective was 13 million for this coming year and they reached the goal. i dont think that includes true NIL, which are marketing deals made by players

i imagine there are a few programs that have a bigger piggybank than USC, but 13 million for one year isnt chump change. i think that is for both players on the roster and recruits, so it isnt like that is all inducement money for new recruits.

by the start of fall camp i think usc will be in the top 10 for high school recruits for 2025. just a feeling that with the new defensive coaching staff, a top QB in the class, the recruiting will be better than recent years. anything less than top 5 is still below what it should be.

    1. Let’s be clear, that’s not USC’s goal, it’s the goal of a third-party collective. Using gifts/money, by a school, to entice a player is still an NCAA violation. Some schools have crossed the line and the NCAA is finally investigating.

  4. His best years were as head coach @ OR. From that departure to PHI & SFO & bel-air tech he steadily declined both in looking like a head coach and acting as one. Until bel-air tech gets out of the Rose Bowl this is their fate. Fools they were to have signed that onerous decades long deal with the Rose Bowl when it was already known Kroenke’s intent on building SOFI while thd lambs played at ths Coliseum.

Thry have no real ‘men’ acting as such top to bottomin thrir athletic deot. abd yes I see USC’s recent hire of Jen Cohen but Martin Jarmond is another bad hire who came cheap and hasn’t any vision let alone a drive to create interest in anything bel-air tech does.

It’s going to be a lot worse in Westwood evrn with DaShaun Foster’s desire to make a difference.

    1. Rusoviet,

If ugly can’t draw at the rose bowl, how will they be able to afford to play at Sofi stadium? They have more workers working the game than fans. There best bet is to play at L.A. City College on Vermont Ave or Santa Monica Jr. College. Fans would fill those stadiums. the only time to use the Rose Bowl would be when SC plays there.

      1. Paw-saw-duh-nah I don’t agree….understand the drive from Westwood to Inglewood is 10+ miles and right down the infamous 405 both ways…..compare that with trying to navigate driving to the Rose Bowl….that foolish decision to tie themselves to that site has been wet blanket since they inked that awful foolish deal. Good coach willalways struggle with the Rose Bowl but an sverage coach won’t with SOFI.

      1. I’ve always been inclined with the 3rd part of that corrupt ‘troika’ of Wooden….Gilbert….. J. D. Morgan. The NCAA passed a rule forbidding an AD sitting on its’ team bench because of that megalomaniac.

My fondest remembrance was watching Chan. Chuckie Young running down the sidelines at the Rose Bowl over a bad call….everywhere feminized males screaming like harpies entering menopause….

  5. As bad as sucla is they did beat SC 2 out of the last 3 years and it was almost 3 in a row, and with the core of its team returning it will be no cakewalk at the Rose Bowl in 2024

  6. Foster is coming in to a poor, current football program. He will be the scapegoat unless he can perform miracles.

UCLA needs to focus on basketball and go back to being the standard in that sport! You can’t be great at everything.
