If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

The spring football game at the Coliseum on April 20 will be the same weekend as the Festival of Books. That means forget about parking on campus, because 40,000-50,000 attend the book festival. Probably not a great idea to visit the bookstore that day either.

Does USC think of these conflicts at all?

  • The Ron Allice Invitational Track Meet will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. Allice is the former long-time USC track coach who won a national title in 2001.
  • And now for some history:
  • This is an awesome moment. Richard Saukko took the field during the third quarter of the Notre Dame game in 1966 with Traveler I and Traveler II.
  • USC halfback Don McCall, a graduate of Fremont High School in Los Angeles, gains yardage vs. Purdue in the 1967 Rose Bowl.
  • With Rod Sherman’s passing last week, here’s another photo of the USC wide receiver against Cal in 1966.
  • Below is another photo of Sherman against Miami in 1966.
  • USC forward Bill Hewitt (33) dunks the ball vs. UCLA in 1967.
  • Did you know comedian/satirist Mort Sahl (right) graduated from USC with a degree in public administration?

Here he is circa 1967 with USC student body president Taylor Hackford, who became a successful film director, best-known for “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982); “Against All Odds (1984); “Blood In, Blood Out” (1993); “Dolores Claiborne” (1994) and “Ray” (2004).

  • The Association performed at Bovard Auditorium in 1966. In case you need a reminder, here they are performing “Windy.”
  • Actor Bill Cosby attended the 1966 USC-Notre Dame game. The blanket of flowers was for Traveler, who was performing at his final game.
  • Marv Goux makes a pretty tough looking cowboy in this 1959 episode of the TV show, “Wanted: Dead or Alive.”
  • USC halfback Jim Lawrence, a graduate of Buena Park High School, catches a pass in the 1967 Rose Bowl vs. Purdue.
  • And finally, the Super Bowl halftime show in 1987 featured George Burns, Mickey Rooney, the Grambling band and . . . the USC band. Oh my.

  6. Blood In Blood Out aka ‘Bound By Honor’ an incredibly well written directed and acted film released in 1993. Hackford did an incredible job in the minutiae that gives this film an indelible hit even 30+ years later. One novel move was the camera shifting to ‘el pino’ at key moments in the film as an ‘anchor’ for the locals Folsom & Indiana.

  12. I was in the USC Marching Band in 1987 and participated in the Super Bowl halftime show. Grambling was not part of this show (even though Wikipedia says otherwise). There are Youtube videos of that show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjS7EPv6gW4) where you can see the USC Band and our distinctive “drive-it” marching style. We were the only marching band on the field for halftime.

        Ken Paxton, Texas’s Attorney General, issued a statement after the ruling was announced: “Although the Supreme Court has permitted the continued destruction of Texas’s border security measures, this appeal remains ongoing, and the Office of the Attorney General will argue the case in front of the Fifth Circuit on February 7.”

    1. He wasn’t generational…he was/is very gifted. The memory most will recall about Caleb Williams is his post-game girly sobbing in mommy’s arms after his dream’s were lost. That proved Williams still has a lot of maturing to do.
