USC Morning Buzz: Never Be Surprised

This is an odd one. I spoke to a former USC defensive player over the weekend who said the Trojans did not have a defensive playbook when he played.

What is a defensive playbook? Usually it contains defenses and adjustments, your philosophy, examples of situational football. It can be as detailed as a coach wants.

If USC didn’t have one, it would be highly irregular. It also might explain a few things.

It’s kind of hard to believe, so who knows. But you can never be surprised, apparently.

“It would be irresponsible,” a coach who faced USC said Monday. “A coach should be held accountable if that is the case.”

  1. Scott – we can’t get much out of what you’re saying unless you divulge what era the said player played in. Then we’d know who his coach was, and what defensive scheme was used.You could do all of this and still keep the player’s name confidential.Sloppy journalism at best.

Totally correct, without some background on what years this player played, it could have been anyone from the Tollner to the Riley era but I’d say it wasn’t Grinch since he was over the top with schemes. Hackett had Bill Young as his DC, I seriously doubt PC had no playbook, Kiffin had Orgeron & Pendergast as his DC’s, Sark had Wilcox. Helton had Wilcox, Pendergast and Todd Orlando as his DC’s.

      Off all those guys, my guess is Orlando, if the story is even true.

    If it is true what your wrote, then the head coach should have been fired due to breach of contract. His job is to produce the best team to his ability. He did not ensure that. This is disgusting but seeing the slopiness in the athleletic dept, it would not suprise me.

        Agree and it depends on how hard the school wants to go after him. However, if they did go after him, they would have to hire a defensive specialist and breakdown tape to see if the dc was doing a good job or not.

  9. No one mentions that Riley lost his team last year – they wouldn’t tackle on defense and some would not block on offense. A starting DB left the team and hasn’t been back. A starting OT stopped blocking and now transferred. It’s not just about fixing the D. They won bowl because the players rallied around MM. What happens in 24 if the O underperforms too? Riley is a O-Coordinator not a coach. Has he set off field standards and discipline yet that Hyde pointed out?

    1. Riley is a really good coach. He’s still learning. What is he about 40, maybe 41? When Nick Saban was 40 he had been a HC one year. He had won 9 games as a HC. At the same age LR has won 74 games. I think that they will have a very good team next year and make the playoffs.

John —You’d think [having the brains they were born with] college players would be aware of just how much they’re hurting their NFL stock when they “act out” on the field —– but you’d be wrong. The Trojan post practice pressers were replete with attitude and indifference. The missed tackles and blocks after the Notre Dame loss [culminating in the absurd loss to UCLA] were evidence of a coach “losing his team.” Nobody can tell me the Trojans were giving it “their all” for the second half of the season.
