USC Notes: A Position That Escaped Much Criticism

You can make a case USC running backs coach Kiel McDonald, who is going to the Chargers, was just about the only coach to escape criticism the past 2 seasons.

The defensive line (Shaun Nua) has been inconsistent; the linebackers (Brian Odom, Roy Manning) were unmemorable, the secondary (Donte Williams, Alex Grinch) was terrible. The offensive line was lousy (Josh Henson); the wide receivers disappointing (Dennis Simmons) and even the star quarterback (Lincoln Riley) came under scrutiny in 2023.

But there wasn’t much said about the tailbacks the past two seasons. Maybe one reason was the lack of dedication to actually running the ball. But they escaped the scrutiny of the other positions.

  • UCLA has made Saturday’s game vs. USC at Pauley Pavilion a “blue out” game. It should be a “blacked out” game with the teams a combined 24-28.
  • USC baseball is 0-4 to start the season and 3 for 45 (.067) with runners on base. Probably not fun when you need to get on a bus to El Camino College for practice, so you won’t be getting any extra batting practice.
