USC Morning Buzz: Finish Third In Big Ten, Go To College Football Playoff

Have you seen that a 14-team College Football Playoff is being discussed that would give the Big Ten and SEC three automatic qualifiers?

Making the College Football Playoff really meant something in the four-team era. But under this 14-team model, you really don’t have to be special to make the playoff. And what will the tiebreaker be in the Big Ten for third place?

Lincoln Riley will be happy with these expansion plans, at least.

  • ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky said the Chicago Bears should draft Jayden Daniels with the No. 1 pick.

      1. Brush with greatness. MG- I got to meer Super Dave at the 2009 USC-UCLA Coliseum Commission Party under the Peristyle. Frank Robinson and Gerry Goffin were also among the luminaries and politicos there.

      2. Grabby — I just found out Bob was Albert Brook’s brother. Brooks has been my hero since he parodied the bullshit PBS show “American Family” with his own “Modern Family” movie—ending his film on a “Gone With the Wind” note by burning the family’s house down….

    1. Even with 14 teams, they’ll find some way to keep SC out. There’s a lot of Trojan haters who are in positions of power who will do anything to make SC look bad. Makai Lemon was a 5 star. Then he committed to SC and they immediately dropped him to a 4 star.

      1. I watched Lemon play numerous times. They got it right, he was a fraud as a 5*. After further review, Riley realized he was a fraud also.

      2. Looks like Scott put his foot in his mouth again. What happens if you have a 4th place team ranked higher than the 3rd place team?

        The desperation rolls on!

      3. I couldn’t disagree with you more. He has explosive speed off of a cut. He reminds me of Ammon-Ra and even Robert Woods. He’s no fraud. Even if he was a fraud, why did they wait until he committed to SC to degrade him. I could be wrong about him but I don’t think I am. You’ll see. This kid has “star” written all over him.

      4. It’ll be impossible to keep USC out if we beat LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and Washington……

      5. parcelman — when Philip of Macedon threatened Sparta with the words “do you want me to enter your city as a friend or as an enemy?”, the Spartan generals sent back a message saying “neither.” When Philip responded, “If I take your city I will throw you all out!”, the Spartans replied, “If”……..

  1. First 4 playoff teams, then questions about 8 became 12, and now we may have 14 “playoff” teams. Why stop there, go for the entire field as in basketball with 64 teams, and then instead of March Madness it can be December Craziness with the last team standing declared the winner

      1. Pity– college football was the last bastion of where a sports season means something unlike every other sport (162 games in baseball; 82 games in basketball)
In the “old” days if we lost to Notre Dame it was ‘Well, there goes any chance for the championship,” whereas now it will be
“We lost to ND, no big deal, we can still lose 2 more and be in”

  2. The importance, value, and meaning of the regular season and the distinguishung factor about college football is long gone, and it’s only going to keep getting eroded. What a shame.

  3. But the contrary view is that more schools now have a chance to get in
with a 12 or 14-team format, so late in the season they may see they still have a chance and play like it.
Besides, a 14-team format or whatever it is in pro football doesn’t seem to have watered down the product

    1. My guess, John, is college football is in a downward spiral…. but it isn’t due strictly to the new playoff system —-

    1. I get it, John —but if it’s true Caleb made 15 mil over the last 2 years [while being on the losing end of games to Utah, Tulane, Notre Dame, Washington, Oregon and UCLA], I have to wonder how much resentment was building in the locker room among players contributing a lot for so little.

Like I said, small words can mean big things. In WWII when the americans were encamped at Bastogne…surrounded and out numbered 5 to 1, the Germans sent the americans a message….”Surrender within two hours or face “total annihilation.” The american general Anthony McAuliffe answered the germans with a one word answer. He said “nuts”. In other words, “give it your best shot”. The rest is history.

    1. That was not unlike King Leonidas’ response to the demand by Xerxes that the Spartans surrender their weapons: Molṑn labé, which means “come and take them!”

      1. I love it. Very unlike todays american young Spartans who(in a similar situation would say) “Mexico….here I come….I ain’t no hero”.

  5. ….and then there’s ‘the princess’ …. seen their schedule for 2024? Save for opening @ TX A&M they play 4 ACC teams (LOU, VA, GA Tech and FL St….then they play Purdue, Stanford, Navy, Army, No. IL, Miami-OH and USC.

No CCG for ‘the Princess’ nah just the sweet annual ‘con job’ the east coast sports scribes jam down all media outlets of the legacy of the Irish. Never mind the 3 shots they’ve had since FBS came on line, for the NC and were crushed but hey just watch since they have their mickey mouse schedule plus no need for a CCG they’ll always be ‘ready’, should their record reflect what a farce they are to be in any top 10 poll, to warrant getting a ‘slot’ in the playoffs every year.

It’s the reason they’ll never join thd Big 10, Big 12 or SEC….they’d be seen how overrated they are and ‘we’ can’t have that can we?
