USC Morning Buzz: Big Ten Pressure Isn’t Like Pac-12

Lincoln Riley didn’t want anything to do with the SEC when he bolted Oklahoma.

Does he want much to do with the Big Ten?

Consider this: A couple weeks ago, Penn State coach James Franklin was reportedly booed by some fans at a dance marathon that raised money that covers 100 percent of all medical expenses for families with childhood cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. Amazing.

He got booed for going 10-3. I don’t think Riley would get booed at any USC public event for going 8-5.

I said the USC-Penn State game is circled on my calendar because both Riley and Franklin have fared poorly against Top 25 teams (Franklin is 12-26 at Penn State; Riley is 3-6 at USC). This is a toss-up game between two coaches who can easily blow games for different reasons.

Does it matter that Franklin hired Andy Kotelnicki as his offensive coordinator. Who? Kotelnicki comes from a highly creative offense at Kansas so maybe Penn State won’t be so vanilla at the Coliseum.

I don’t think USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn is going to like facing this offense unless Franklin shackles Kotelnicki. Riley hopes Franklin won’t want to face Lynn.

Two head coaches feeling heat. Both overpaid. This game has a lot of intrigue.

  1. That’s a lousy hit piece even for you Scott. Jeff Franklin has been at PA St. going on 10 years. He has not improved over his best year 2016 when PA St. lost to Sam Darnold. PA St. is the sole national presence some 14 states in the northeast have for any relevance and the program has never been of any real worth since they joined the Big 10.

Riley has coached 3 Heisman Trophy winners he also made a colossal mistake in retaining Grinch as his head DC. In addition, he knows this is it for him – he either wins or wishes he had because there is no going back for Riley.

    He’ll do well

    1. You can’t argue with the staff he is putting together, especially if he actually gets that TCU running back coach. The big hurdle was getting him to have a paradyme shift in his thinking whereby he came to realize that you can’t win big without defense. He seems to have jumped that hurdle and made that paradyme shift in his thinking. Grinch was a huge mistake. That guy might be a good D-Backs coach but he’s not a DC. Personally, I agree with you. I think LR will do well. He seems to have everything he needs to be a great coach. My question is how bad does he want it. This guy is not like PC who loves coaching so much he would coach until he is 95 if he could.

    2. Yet, it was always James Franklin who Scott wanted USC to hire. But, that’s because he’s black not because he’s qualified, we all know Scotty is as WOKE as they come.

      1. Franklin is an outstanding coach. Personally, I’d rather have LR. LR’s philosophy has changed and it will continue to change more. He’s only about 40 years old. We all tend to live and learn. Our daily experience tends to change the way we think. You have to be a lot older than 40 before you get to the stage where you can say “you can’t teach old dogs new tricks”.

      2. He went from running the ball to not, he let his prima donna QB do whatever he wanted, he had a breakdown at the end of the season, Riley isn’t head coaching material

  2. Why does it not surprise me that you have a game circled that you hope goes badly for two coaches. You, Wolfie, have a serious case of inferiority complex. It makes you feel better about your own pathetic self to see others fail.

      1. I believe they also had plans to attempt the same type of voter suppression (that they claim to be against, you know…”all about democracy”), but that will be shot down by this ruling, as well.

  3. The Penn St coach is booed at a charitable dance marathon, huh?
I bet it was 2 or 3 idiots out of 200+ people, but Wolf thinks this is news

    1. Penn State Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft and head football coach James Franklin kicked off THON 2024’s Pep Rally in style Saturday night at the Bryce Jordan Center

The two university staples took center stage before several varsity athletic squads competed in a spirited dance competition for the distinction of pep rally champion.

“Wow, this is awesome,” Kraft said. “It is overwhelming when you walk into this building.”

Before the dance battle began, Kraft’s sentiment was shortly followed by Franklin, who graced the THON stage for a quick word of encouragement.

However, Franklin’s welcome wasn’t as warm as Kraft’s. The decade-tenured program leader was faced with a flurry of audible boos heard throughout the Bryce Jordan Center’s confines.

“This is year 11 for me,” Franklin said. “And this weekend, I’m blown away by what you guys do for the [Four Diamonds] families [and] for the Penn State community. This is what makes Penn State so special.”

    1. That’s not strictly true, Grabby. Gabby spent one decade defending Scott and extolling his virtues. This was the happiest decade of Gabby’s life. He couldn’t wait to wake up each morning!
