If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC plays UCLA in the Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament tonight at 7:30 in Las Vegas. Good luck watching it as it will be on the Pac-12 Network.

  • Andy Enfield surpassed Bob Boyd on Thursday night for the No. 3 spot at USC in all-time victories. Enfield is 217-145. Boyd was 216-131.

Here’s my problem on that: Boyd didn’t flood his non-conference schedule with tomato cans like Enfield does most of the time. Pete Maravich has been in the news recently because he was the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer. USC faced him in 1970 and 1971.

You can randomly pick a USC schedule, like in 1969-70, and see how much better it was than anything Enfield has done. USC played LSU, Houston, Iowa State, Illinois, Temple, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Colorado and St. John’s.

In 1973-74 USC played non-conference games vs. Arizona, Utah, Illinois, Santa Clara, Ohio, Arizona State, Houston, Rutgers, Oral Roberts, Seton Hall and Fordham. Arizona, Utah, Rutgers and Arizona State all won 18-19 games that season. Oral Roberts went 23-6 and lost to Kansas, 93-90, in the Elite Eight.

Enfield would resign before playing that schedule on a regular basis.

  • And now for some history:

TROJAN WARRIORS

This section is going to spotlight some Trojan greats who deserve more praise because they were linemen, the most overlooked group of players.

Mike Taylor
  • A couple weeks ago, I wrote about offensive lineman Mike Taylor, who delivered a key block on O.J. Simpson’s famous 64-yard TD run against UCLA. Simpson and Taylor were roommates at City College of San Francisco. He was also on the USC rugby team.

Taylor was the 10th pick in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But if you lived up in El Dorado Hills, which is near Sacramento, you might know Taylor more for another reason. For more than 20 years, he owned a restaurant and a sports bar, both named Po-Boy’z.

  • Let’s appreciate Tony Terry, a defensive tackle/middle guard who was part of “The Wild Bunch” defensive line in 1969.

Terry was a three-year letterman (1967-69) and a member of USC’s 1967 national championship team. He  also started in three Rose Bowls.

Here’s a fact people overlook: Terry was credited with blocking a UCLA extra point in USC’s 21-20 victory over the No. 1-ranked Bruins in 1967.

Terry, defensive ends Jimmy Gunn and Charles Weaver, tackles Al Cowlings and Tody Smith and middle guard Willard “Bubba” Scott were nicknamed “The Wild Bunch,” based on the critically acclaimed Western movie. Above is a nice color photo of Terry from 1968 against Oregon State.

  • Nose tackle Rich Dimler might have one of the most sought-after compliments you could seek for a USC football player.

“He is the toughest player I’ve seen in 22 years of coaching,” Marv Goux said of Dimler.

Dimler was a Parade All-American at Bayonne High School in New Jersey. He chose USC over Pitt and Penn State.

“I decided to go for it all and come to ‘SC because of their winning tradition and the Rose Bowl. Some people back East had doubts of my potential; and I figured if I can come here and play I must be good enough to play anywhere in the country.”

Here’s what he said about getting recruited in New Jersey.

“I was promised things from all of them,” he said. “They used to bother my girlfriend, they used to come right into the bar where I used to hang out. They really hassled me.”

He used to hang out in a bar while he was in high school?

Who says USC students only cared about football. Look at them lined up on campus for tickets to the UCLA game in 1974. This was taken on Feb. 26 and the game was on March 9, so students clearly cared. The game was a sellout at the Sports Arena.
  • We always talk about former USC basketball star John Rudometkin’s college career. But here he is with the New York Knicks in 1962-63.

He is pictured next to former UCLA star Willie Naulls. Other notables in the picture are Johnny Green, Gene Shue and Richie Guerin, who averaged 21.5 points per game that season.

  • With the Academy Awards this weekend, I need to repeat that one of the greatest filmmakers was a Trojan. Leo McCarey is a graduate of the USC Law School.

McCarey was responsible for the teaming of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and guided the development of their characters.

But that barely scratches the surface of McCarey’s career: He directed “The Awful Truth,” (1937) considered by some to be the greatest screwball comedy ever made (McCarey won the first of his three Oscars with this film).

He also directed “Duck Soup,” (1933) considered the Marx Bros. best film.

If that doesn’t ring a bell, maybe you remember “Going My Way” (1944) or “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (1945) or “Love Affair” (1939) or “An Affair to Remember.” (1957).

He is one of only of eight directors who have won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay (Orig/Adapted) Oscars.

French director Jean Renoir said “Leo McCarey understood people better than any other Hollywood director.”

  • What were you doing on May 22, 1974 at noon if you were a USC student?

Student No. 1: “I’m going to the Rita Coolidge concert at the Student Activities Center patio.”

Student No. 2: “I’m going to hear Seals and Croft at the Student Activities Center.”

  • And on Nov. 26, 1976, the Shrine Auditorium hosted Jackson Browne and Orleans in concert.
