USC Saturday Buzz: An Offensive Challenge For Lincoln Riley

Several NFL scouts/assistant coaches in town this week told me that one of the biggest differences between Caleb Williams in 2022 and 2023 was the departure of wide receiver Jordan Addison in 2023.

It makes sense because Addison was clearly the best USC receiver the past 2 seasons. But what has to be said is the failure of USC’s coaches to develop the other receivers last season.

Another issue is that Lincoln Riley didn’t go to receivers enough that were ready to have a dominant role like Tahj Washington. I would also include Zacariah Branch in this category based on his inadequate amount of touches.

There’s going to be more pressure on the offense with a new QB. So Riley better get his act together to make sure the right people get the ball in the offense.

Even Addison didn’t get enough touches in his lone season, which troubles me about Riley’s offense. He had more than 1,000 yards receiving and caught 17 TDs at Pitt in 2021 but then had 908 yards receiving and eight TDs at USC.

That’s on Riley. Like so many things.

  • The Pac-12 is now 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament. USC women’s basketball opens NCAA Tournament play today at 1:30 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Galen Center. The game will be on ESPN.
  • The USC basketball roster currently has five players returning and that includes Isaiah Collier and Bronny James. You think team chemistry will be an issue next season?
  • USC baseball defeated UCLA, 15-2, on Friday night in Westwood. It was the Trojans’ largest margin of victory over the Bruins since 2002. USC is now 8-13 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-12. UCLA is 7-12, 2-5.

Frankly, that UCLA record is inexcusable when you consider how much easier it is to build a roster at a public school compared to a private school.

USC and UCLA play Game 2 of the series today at 2 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

  1. I don’t know about that, Wolf, the Wiley offense is also built on spreading the ball around and not concentrating on just one receiver, and 2022 with Addison was a fine comeback year for SC footbal

      1. When they riot like that they should start shooting people. Everytime you let a person just break our laws and walk freely into our country, you are sending them a message. The message is that these people don’t care about enforcing their own laws. They’re saying “just as we broke the law to get in the country, we can break the law once we are in the country”. When you let them riot and beat up your soldiers, the message you are sending is once they get into the country all they have to do when they want something is form a mob and start burning down buildings and if there are police or troops out there, just beat then up too(sort of like what they did in NYC lately). American leaders will protect them, not the rights of the citizens. Why do those soldiers even have guns if you are not going to use them. Unfortunately, the average american just says “well, Joe knows what he is doing and they keep voting for the dems”.. It used to be “in God we Trust”. Today it’s “in Joe(or Barack) we trust”.

        But Please……don’t tell me that these people are just good people who want a better life. Many of them may be, but many of them are being sent here by their home countries on planes totally avoiding the border. You don’t go out of your way to get rid of your good citizens.

SC coach Enfield had best get some JC all americans and some transfer portal players with experience…obviously he can tell them that starting is a greater possibility than perhaps going to other schools not having the needs SC does. It appears he will not have even 5 talented players returning.

      1. He has had good years at SC and this year is the worst . That happens to coaches,John McKay had some poor years among his many good ones.SC has never been a consistent bsktbl power..not ever in my 80 years. I rate him above average over his tenure,and wolfie never likes anyone who coaches at SC so listening to him is like listening to a communist talking about economic truths…you won’t get any.

    They used to call the New World Order(‘the great reset’) a conspiracy and, indeed, it used to be because it was being planned behind closed doors. But it’s out in the open today. They’re telling you what they are going to do. We need to vote nationalist not globalist. That means everyone has to do their homework. All of the dems are globalists. But probably 1/5th of the repubs are also globalists. Voting for a globalist who is republican is just as bad as voting for a democrat.

  8. The american people have acquired an entitlement mentality. They think the government owes them the “Life of Riley”. Shut down the government and that will draw every Freddy the Freeloader(who wouldn’t normally vote) in the country to vote democrat. Getting out of this 34 trillion debt will not be easy.
