There Is Only One Choice For USC Basketball

USC has a chance to transform its basketball program and the choice is right in front of everyone: San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher.

This is a no-brainer because it makes sense on so many levels.

I want to just say right off the bat that Dutcher is a stand-up guy and normal person. You can’t say that about many USC basketball coaches of the past three decades and it really matters.

Dutcher obviously knows Southern California after coaching at San Diego State since 1999. He also has Big Ten experience, playing at Minnesota (his father, Jim, was the Golden Gophers coach from 1975-86) and was an assistant at Michigan from 1989-98. The Wolverines won a national title under Steve Fisher in 1989.

He was part of a San Diego State coaching staff that recruited and landed Kawhi Leonard. USC, UCLA and many others didn’t even offer Leonard a scholarship.

Dutcher has won 75 percent of his games at San Diego State.

You obviously know he took San Diego State to the NCAA championship game last season. And he returned to the Sweet 16 this season, losing to No. 1-ranked UConn. He also did it without forward Keshad Johnson, who transferred to Arizona. His best team during the COVID year didn’t even get to play in the NCAA Tournament but went 30-2.

How does USC pry him from San Diego State? For starters, with money. Dutcher makes $2.3 million. Andy Enfield makes more than $4.5 million at USC. I’d offer him $5 million. Make an offer he can’t refuse.

Dutcher has a $10.2 million buyout but USC is getting $2 million from SMU for Enfield. More importantly, does USC want to win at basketball? Does it want to excite its fans? Then pony up some cash just like it did for Lincoln Riley.

I think Jen Cohen wants to hit a home run with this hire. Hiring a basketball coach can be a risky task. But this is as close to a sure thing as possible for USC. It’ll cost money. But this is USC. It has money. Just get it done.

Fast fact: Did you know Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka played for Dutcher at Michigan? That would probably mean LeBron James would get along with Dutcher than Enfield if Bronny comes back next season.

Greg McDermott- Creighton -is a much better choice than Dutcher at San Diego State.  He has won on a consistent basis at Creighton with far less talent than Dutcher who thrives on transfer players. Dutcher, is too old we need a guy that will take the program to the next level, and win on a consistent basis likes he has. 

    McDermott – is a hard nosed tough coach who can motivate and lead the players something Enfield could not. McDermott, learned the game from Dana Altman at Oregon, and once he took over the program took it to the next level.

    Randy Bennett at St. Mary’s is the second choice. He can coach, recruit, and wins on a consistent basis.

    Enfield, is not a basketball coach SMU will find that out. Although Andy improved recruiting by bringing in a one year NBA 1st round pick annually his teams played street ball and were poorly coached which is not the way you build a basketball program, and win on a consistent basis.

    Let’s hire a basketball coach this time who can build the program the proper way with 5 good 204 star basketball players who play the game with fundamentals and together under a stong coach who demands discipline on the court not showcasing a players talent so he can get to the NBA faster.

    Please no more coaches who have 1 good season. We need a coach who’s won on a consistent basis over at least 5 years. Someone who thinks 5 good players playing together on offense and defense is the correct formula not recruiting one NBA future 1st pick who stays in school 1 year, and destroys team chemistry.

    I agree with tommyd, McDermott would be a great hire. Creighton is a private school, you have to actually be able to read and write to get in there so he knows what it’s like to recruit those kind of athletes, you know, ones who are somewhat academic, unlike SDSU.

    And I’d bet it would be a hell of a lot easier to recruit kids to USC in LA than Creighton in Omaha Nebraska.

        Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology.   10. USC needs to a hire a Coach who is Trump supporter and MAGA extremist who is the Donald Trump os College Basketball, It’ll excite the fanbase to have a MAGA Supporter pacing the Galen Center court. Maybe it;ll even get Trump to a game which would see attendance go through the roof.
