USC Notes: Kicking Game Needs Improvement

Lincoln Riley said today cornerback Ceyair Wright is “still away from the team right now.”

What does that mean? It certainly lends fuel to the idea Wright’s absence is related to some type of disciplinary matter. Wright is not on the USC roster.

  • Riley said he wants USC to improve its kicking game:

“It’s an area we know we have to perform better at, certainly on both kickoffs and field goals. When I would say field goals, I would mean the entire operation of it. We’ve got to take some positive steps there. There’s just no question about it.

“We’ve added some guys (to the competition). We’ll just kind of see how the spring goes. We’re letting these guys compete.”

USC is bringing in kicker Ryan Sayeri from Chaminade High School but he isn’t coming until the summer.

You know how else you improve on field goals? You hire a coach who knows what they are doing in the area.

    1. …it’s better than Riley’s original idea —getting a Special Teams Coach…. but eliminating the snapper, holder and kicker positions….

    2. Perhaps bag the idea of carrying 3 receivers coaches so you can have enough space for a special teams coordinator. Btw a phase that is truly one third of the game of football. Due to it’s total effect on field position on both offense and defense and it’s increased responsibility for volatile explosive plays both for and against.
