USC actually comes out in good shape financially by trading Andy Enfield for Eric Musselman.

They make about the same money but USC gets a $1 million windfall because Enfield’s buyout ($2 million) was more than Musselman’s ($1 million).

  • Am I the only one who thinks it will be a jarring transtion for Kobe Johnson to go from Andy Enfield to Mick Cronin?
  • USC basketball players Kaitlyn Davis and McKenzie Forbes have formally filed to be included in the WNBA Draft. They had an extra year of eligbility if they chose to use it.
  • During Andy Enfield’s tenure as basketball coach, USC had:

Three university presidents.

Four athletic directors.

Six football coaches.

  • The word in college basketball circles is SMU turned down Musselman for Enfield. We’ll see how that works out.
  • The University of Washington wants to hire former USC assistant coach Tony Bland. A three-year show cause order, which prevents Bland from coaching in college basketball, should expire later this month.

MARV GOUX STORY

Marv Goux, the legendary USC player/coach, could scare any player.

In 1962, Goux reportedly stood above an injured player at USC practice and said:

“Listen, you’re not hurt. Get off the ground. No one’s ever died at Bovard (Field).”

  • When USC played Navy in 1949, George Tirebiter was not amused by Navy mascot Bill the Goat. To his credit, the goat isn’t backing down.

But it was not the goat regularly used for Navy games. Instead, Navy used a goat that lived at Naval facility in Compton.

RECORD HOLDER

When Earl McCullough ran track for USC in 1968, he was also the world-record holder in the 120-yard high hurdles. He was the favorite for the gold medal at the 1968 Olympics, but they were held in October that year.

McCullough, who was also a wide receiver, was drafted with the 24th pick by the Detroit Lions in the 1968 NFL Draft and opted to play football instead.

WINNING TICKET

The Bay Area Weekender is a thing of the past thanks to the move to the Big Ten. But in 1975, USC QB Vince Evans drew the winning ticket from a Mortar Board contest that allowed two students to have an all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco for the USC-Cal game.

  • Actor David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Stars Wars movies, spoke at Bovard Auditorium on Nov. 27, 1979. When he showed a film clip of Darth Vader in Star Wars, the students hissed.

“What a lovely reaction,” Prowse said. “Please — more.”
