USC Morning Buzz: O.J. Simpson Dies

O.J. Simpson, the former USC Heisman Trophy winner, who was accused of and ultimately acquitted of the brutal 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, has died, according to his family. He was 76.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” a statement from his family said.

His legacy was forever changed by the June, 1994 knife slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.

Simpson played at USC in 1967 and 1968 after transferring from City College of San Francisco. He led the nation in rushing both years with 1,543 yards and 13 touchdowns in 1967 and 1,880 yards and 23 touchdowns in 1968.

He finished second in the Heisman voting in 1967 and won in 1968.

His 64-yard TD run against No. 1-ranked UCLA in 1967 that gave No. 4-ranked USC a 21-20 victory is perhaps the most memorable play in Trojans football history.

Simpson was drafted first overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 1969 NFL Draft. Simpson gained 11,236 yards in the NFL, which placed him second on the league’s all-time rushing list when he retired.

He was the 1973 NFL MVP after becoming the first tailback to rush for more than 2,000 yards (2,003) while playing for the Buffalo Bills.

      1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, 12 people who didn’t listen to the evidence, the blacks who were going to get whitey for Rodney King and the other’s who feared for their life if the voted guilty, those 12 ?

OJ was set free once the trial was moved out of Santa Monica.

  1. Well, we saw this coming a couple of months ago. Those of us with a functioning brain anyway.

The Village Idiot claimed that because OJ said he wasn’t in hospice, that meant he didn’t have cancer. LOL

  2. Does any other school have two Heisman Winners that would get heavily booed if they were introduced at a home football game/ Reggie maybe 30/70 and OJ 95/5.

    1. I beg to differ. Reggie did something that tarnished the school’s image. OJ didn’t. Most would cheer for OJ and what he did for the football program.

Well, most of the men who didn’t have their wives with them. Fortunately, mine isn’t one of those and would probably cheer along with me.

So Cal, you and your wife might be the only people in the Coli who’d be cheering for OJ.

Dude brutally murdered two people, was smug AF after and just because he was great at running with a ball, you’d be cheering for him…WTF?

      2. LOL! You can play make believe all you want. But if we would supposedly be the only ones cheering, I wouldn’t have gotten so many cheers when I wore his jersey to games.

      3. Wayne, my idiot brother, who is old enough to know better, would wear a 32 jersey to SC games after OJ got off, he’s probably in mourning today.

      4. Any real Trojan who’s also a believer is in mourning. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

Parents of people who have done horrible things, still miss their son or daughter after they are gone. Doesn’t mean you condone what they may have done in their lives. They are still family.

Now if you don’t believe that you’re a Bruin for 4 years, but a Trojan for life and that we are indeed a FAMILY, OK. But some of us do.

      5. So, if you beat your ex wife then kill your ex wife and some innocent young man, never admit to it, then walk around like a pompous ass afterward ( and get arrested for armed robbery ), you’re forgiven because you went to USC ?

That’s some twisted fucking logic there.

      6. Agree Buddha. OJ’s conduct was horrendous. And Reggie accepted illegal payments from a sports agent then cheated the agent prompting an NCAA investigation that resulted in USC, but not Reggie, being severely punished. USC likely lost hundreds of millions in potential sports and donation revenues based on what Reggie did. The sanctions on recruiting along with bad coaching decisions crippled the program for years. So who would receive more booing, I don’t know. But Pat Haden would likely get booed louder than the murderer or the selfish cheat.

    2. @SoCal Regarding “Love the sinner, hate the sin”. I love Pete Carroll. Hate that he didn’t hand the ball to Beast Mode or have Reggie on the field on 4th and 2.

      2. Budda,

the only two that know that is God and OJ. Remember the good thief on the cross who stole and maybe even murdered asked for forgiveness while on the cross and Christ said, “Today, you will be with me in paradise”. He might have asked forgiveness on his death bed or before. We will see.

      3. According to the Bible, hell is a place of judgment, where the unrighteous will be condemned to “unquenchable fire” and “utter darkness”.

Jesus called this place “the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels”.

In traditional English versions, he occasionally seems to speak of “Hell”. For example, in his warnings in the Sermon on the Mount, he says anyone who calls another a fool, or who allows their right eye or hand to sin, will be cast into “hell” (Matthew 5:22, 29-30).

      4. Not bs. But no sin is beyond forgiveness for those who truly repent. Only God knows what is in a man’s heart and whether he is truly sorry for any sins he MAY have committed.

For the born-again child of God, there is no unforgivable sin. The believer’s sin was forgiven at the cross, and there is no longer any condemnation for those who are in Christ – Romans 8:1

  3. On a college football practice field it is difficult to discern who will be a big star, and I went around telling anybody who would listen that this Simpson guy would be a flash in the pan. Fortunately very few of those people I told that to are alive today

Years after he departed SC I was leading cheers one day at the coliseum when I saw him passing in the crowd and he smiled as we broke into ‘We are-SC,’ his favorite cheer

The guy transcended sports, appearing on tv and in movies, and with those looks he was an American icon which made his failings and fallings all the more difficult to endure.

In conclusion, he will take to the grave with him who really killed his wife and her friend, but O.J.indeed found the killer but he never definitively told us who he was

      1. Budda,

Murderers have entered the gates of heaven. One is St. Paul who was Saul prior to his conversion. He was a murderer and beat people to a pulp.

We don’t know if OJ asked for forgiveness. If he did and was sincerely contrite, then Christ will accept him. We all are sinners and one sin will keep you out of heaven. Yet we have hope and that is to ask for Christ’s help and mercy.

Budda, thank you for allowing me to talk to you about something that means the world to me.

    1. “What Dreams May Come” with Robin Williams had an interesting take on the “hell” his wife was in for having taken her own life. It was more of a void where she was all alone.

I need to watch it again. Haven’t seen it in 20 years.

      2. I’m pretty much with my buddy John on this one. There is a passage in Matthew where Jesus says ALL sins are forgivable…. “except a sin against the [Holy] Spirit.” Modern theologians interpret the Holy Spirit as Truth. In other words, all sins of weakness are forgiven as soon as we repent….. the only sin that’s not forgiven is denigrating what you know to be True….i. e., knowingly trying to convince others a lie is the truth.

      4. Budda,

Actually Christ talked about hell or gehenna over 300 times, not just few times. As far as heaven and hell are concerned, many people have seen both plus purgatory and have talked about it. One example is the children from Fatima, three very young children around 9-11 years old had the blessing of the Blessed Virigin Mary, Mother of Jesus appear to them for 6 months on the 13th of every month from May to October. She showed all three places, hell, purgatory, and heaven. They wrote on this and their experience.

  5. Yep, you got that right, g-man, since there is no hell there is only one place for EVERYBODY to go to, what some call ‘heaven,’ others call the Afterlife.

Good thing that is true, g-man, because based on some of the nasty stuff you write you better hope there is a God of grace

    3. “God, if he exists, doesn’t judge.” “There is no hell.” Of course, this ideology directly contradicts the Bible. The only authority Lawyer John cites for this is his own understanding – the Gospel according to Lawyer John. I wouldn’t bet where I spend my eternity on this source.

      1. “God, if he exists, doesn’t judge.” “There is no hell.” I guess the problem I have with that statement is where is he getting his information. Is it possible to investigate God Sherlock Holmes style…..like a detective would investigate a crime? I mean, God is way up there and we are way down here. It would seem to me that if we are going to know something about God, it’s because He chooses to reveal Himself to us and not the other way around. You need revelation from God to really know something about Him.

Where is Lawyer Johns revelation coming from. It sounds like it is coming out of his own head. Here’s what I think about God. This is what’s coming out of my head. I think God is the spaghetti monster. He lives on Mars and eats spaghetti and if we eat spaghetti 3 meals a day during our whole life we will go to heaven when we die. If we don’t, we will go to hell. Tell my why Lawyer Johns God is anymore credible than my God. After all, our revelation of Him is coming from the same place….out of our own heads.

Some people say, “God didn’t create man….man created God”. There is some truth in that. A lot of people do create God. They create God in their own image. They create Him the way they want Him to be.

    1. True, John. As another John {Lennon] said “it doesn’t matter if you’re wrong or right, where you belong is right.” btw, Bill Maher was passionately talking about some obscure aspect of some Oliver Stone movie when someone asked him if he believes in an afterlife —he answered “I never give it a thought, who gives a rat’s ass?!.” Right. He thinks about the casting in “Money Never Sleeps”…. but he doesn’t think about what happens after death. Everybody watching knew he said the words he said, not because he believed them, but to appear cool in front of his ‘constituency.’ Bottom line: it doesn’t matter whether he gives a rat’s ass or not…. it’s what it is…..and it’s waiting for him.

  7. If OJ had been a teacher for LAUSD, making $25K a year, would they have been OK with Nicole dating & eventually marrying him? Would SHE have even considered dating him? When he was at USC, most people thought he was an ass. Did she overlook that because of his fame & fortune?

If so, THAT is where the real lesson should have been learned. Don’t raise your daughters to sell themselves off like a piece of meat. But you say that and people cry that you’re victim blaming. I don’t care! Make bad decisions and bad things can happen.
