USC Morning Buzz: Transfer Portal Madness

The transfer portal is open today.

What’s the over/under on how long it takes for USC to land its first transfer? And will it be an offensive or defensive lineman? Offensive linemen should be top priority. Fully developed offensive linemen. Because that’s not a forte of this staff.

You want a crazy stat for basketball? There are currently 12 McDonald’s All-Americans in the transfer portal for the 2024 cycle, including two USC players (Bronny James, Kijani Wright).

All hail college sports!

  • I’ve heard Reggie Theus mentioned as a possible addition to the USC coaching staff. This would be an uninspired choice, to say the least.
  • USC announced that valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech has been cancelled. Whatever your thoughts on the issue, it illustrates one consistent thing about USC’s administration: It abhors controversy and wants it to go away as quickly as possible.

  2. Asna Tabassum, he valedictorian at the University of Southern California has been barred from delivering a graduation speech due to “security” fears after she was accused of promoting “anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric.”

Tabassum, a biomedical engineering major, had been chosen from about 100 applicants with GPAs of 3.98 or higher to deliver the valedictory address.

Critics cited the senior’s minor — resistance to genocide — and “likes” on her Instagram account, where her bio links to a page that says “learn about what’s happening in Palestine, and how to help.”

USC Provost Andrew Guzman announced the decision to bar Tabassum.

“Unfortunately, over the past several days, discussion relating to the selection of our valedictorian has taken on an alarming tenor,” he wrote.

“The intensity of feelings, fueled by both social media and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, has grown to include many voices outside of USC and has escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement. We cannot ignore the fact that similar risks have led to harassment and even violence at other campuses,” he wrote.

“After careful consideration, we have decided that our student valedictorian will not deliver a speech at commencement. While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety,” Guzman continued.

He explained that the decision was “necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students,” and is “consistent with the fundamental legal obligation — including the expectations of federal regulators — that universities act to protect students and keep our campus community safe.”

The provost said the decision did not violate freedom of speech.

“There is no free-speech entitlement to speak at a commencement. The issue here is how best to maintain campus security and safety, period,” he wrote.

The Muslim student said in a statement that the school has “abandoned” her.

“Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all,” she said.

“This campaign to prevent me from addressing my peers at commencement has evidently accomplished its goal: today, USC administrators informed me that the university will no longer allow me to speak at commencement due to supposed security concerns,” Tabassum continued.

    1. ” anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all. “

But it’s ok to be anti semitic & anti Zionist.

      1. There are 52 Muslim countries. Do any of them stand for “human rights for all.” Would any them allow a women to attend college let alone deliver the valedictorian address. How about drive a car? Wear a bathing suit? Could a Jew attend college in a Muslim country? Give a speech critical of Islam? Openly practice their Jewish faith? How about own property? Walk the streets with a cross of David?

      2. I’ve tried to weigh in on this….but… my reply was cancelled. Here goes again — naturally, I have sympathy for the Palestinian civilians caught up in this conflict…. but [again]…… the very well orchestrated & subsidized pro-Palestinian demonstrations presently ongoing across the country are really just Step One in the Far Left’s attempt to bring down both Israel and America.

      3. If the previously designated Valedictorian actually called for ethnic cleansing [and I’d sincerely like someone to post her FULL statement if she did] then USC is headed in an even worse direction than I suspected.

  3. Maybe it’s time we stop the personal stuff & put our brains to use… it’s important we discuss these issues …. Scott is practically inviting us to….. but we owe each other more than ad hominem [I include myself in this suggestion to save a certain someone the trouble of pointing out I’m as bad as anybody when it comes to the use of ad hominem]….

    1. She has a nice smile. I wonder if she socializes with her fellow students. Sleeps in one of the dorms. Has pizza and talks it up. Attends a football game followed by an event at one of the fraternities. Goes out on dates with her fellow students.

My guess is “no” to all of the above. I doubt that she is inclusive. Likely not part of the melting pot and probably segregates herself from most of the student body other than fellow Muslims. Meanwhile, she may have taken the place of a 3rd generation legacy, great grandfather fought in WW2, because Carol rejected the legacy in favor of someone more diverse and inclusive who can truly add something to the college experience. My guess is that our valedictorian will contribute very little to the university experience and she is already showing signs that she resents USC by accusing it of “racist hatred.”

  4. Your a phony. Joe Biden is incapable of making a response without cue cards. ”You’re a . . . well you know . . . who is that . . . will they let me take a question . . . where do I go.”

    1. You get the bonus prize Cowardly Gabby if you can explain what crime Trump committed in the NY hush money case. At this point, DA Bragg has yet to identify a crime in the indictment but that has not stopped the corrupt NY judicial system from proceeding with a trial because what is really important here is that Trump not become President and we can’t leave that up to the people.

  5. Why don’t I fight Joe Biden instead. He is stronger, and more mentally sound than Gabby and he has not repeatedly said that “nobody fights over words on a blog” like Cowardly Gabby. There is a one in 100 million chance that Joe says Yes and those are better odds than Cowardly Gabby stepping into a ring.
