When I wrote about Parry O’Brien setting a world record in the shot put at the West Coast Relays in Fresno, it highlighted just how big this meet used to be.
For example: USC had a publicist who wanted to go to the relays, which were the same day as the spring football game. The publicist made plans to drive up with NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle (yes, Pete Rozelle).
John McKay threatened the fire the official if he skipped the football game for the track meet.
“The Fresno Relays are way bigger than the USC football spring game,” the publicist said.
The publicist defied McKay and was fired, according to several colleagues.
Even Rozelle’s biography has a reference to the Fresno Relays.
- Billie Jean King spoke at today’s USC School of Communication graduation ceremony. She even pulled out a tennis racket and lobbed balls at the graduates. King also received an honorary degree from USC.
- Former major-league baseball player Sean Burroughs collapsed and died while coaching his son’s Little League team. He was 43.
Burroughs signed with USC to play baseball but was drafted ninth overall in the 1998 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres and turned pro.

I think Sean Burroughs was on the Long Beach little league team that won the little league world series back in the 1990s. He was a huge kid, about 6 inches and 50 pounds heavier than many of the other kids. Absolutely dominated the foreign competition.

Just did a quick check on Burroughs and he was actually 43 at death, the son of a batting champion from 1974, and was a substance abuser at one time but no indication that this was relevant to his death

Both Sean and his father Jeff were grads of LB Wilson. Jeff was the first round pick of the Senators in 1969. That was my sophomore year at Wilson.

If the fight is legit, Mike will knock him out. All he has to do is rush in, probably take a few shots on the way [which won’t hurt] and throw a couple of uppercuts at Jake’s jawbone when he gets inside….which will knock Jake unconscious….

Hate to disagree with you MG but Duran’s best weight was lightweight. He made most of his $$ fighting in the more profitable welterweight division. Agree though about the right thrown against Moore.
