USC Morning Buzz: The Question That Should Be Asked For Lincoln Riley’s Salary?

The headline with Lincoln Riley has been his $10 million salary in 2022.

But is anyone asking if he earned it?

He certainly did not last season. Five losses and he actually made more than $10 million last season. Not to mention the personal driver and other perks he has gotten from USC (or the new football building being constructed).

A lot of fans seem to be placated simply because he brought in a new defensive staff. But if he wants to earn that ridiculous salary, he needs to field a team that can win a national title.

That means the offense is a question mark too. Can his offense win a national title? Can his offense make a title game? It never has. Does his offense provide the physicality needed against the elite teams?

Or does the $10 million get you flashy stats, Heismans and No. 1 NFL Draft picks?

  • Riley making $10 million a year wasn’t news to readers here as this reference from Nov., 2022, shows.
  • When USC plays UConn in women’s basketball on the Fox Network on Dec. 21, it will be preceeded by an NFL game. That ought to boost the ratings.

  1. Has Riley earned his salary? Well, the program has improved. Won 11 games two years ago. The defense needs to take a big jump this year. If they win 9 games or more, and is able to recruit the trench players, I think he earned his salary

  2. if anyone actually believes Lincoln Riley will even come close to a national championship while he’s coaching at USC, they are delusional. He’s been there three years and still hasn’t laid the foundation for a championship. He cherry picks average players from the portal with the exception of maybe a few. His high school recruiting is very average at best, and he still hasn’t solved his lingering offensive line problems. And keep in mind that he has all the resources as any top five program

  3. When a football coach signs a fat contract with some school there is no provision that calls for him to be even competent let alone guaranteeing a certain number of wins each season. Ton-o-hel was never going to lose contractual money for his incompetence

  4. Of course looking back Wiley is fortunate to have gotten off to a good start in L.A. in 2022 primarily due to a “once in a lifetime” performance by Celeb (which shall not be dilluted by his 2023 follow-up Act)

  5. Not sure if SC will be smelling too many national championships anymore, or Alabama or Ohio St for that matter. In this 12-team Playoff format the winner has to win 3, maybe 4 games against the nation’s very best. Just getting into those Playoffs is a tall task

Maybe it’s wiser to just enjoy and treat each game as a “universe” unto itself, certainly the SC-Yucla game is every year. But LSU. Michigan

  6. -Glad SC finally got out of that rinky-dink ‘pass-and-duck’ Pac-12 League where blocking-and-tackling is optional

No the Trojans are suddenly transformed into a tougher bunch only because they are now in the midwest league the old Big-10 where if you are not tough-enough, best not to show up

  7. There is nothing to the rumor that LSU was once a ‘divisional’ college that didn’t want to be known as ‘LSD’

  8. Thinking it over,, wouldn’t SC have been better off joining the SEC than the ‘Big?’– warmer weather schools in Florida, Georgia and Alabama versus Minnesota and Illinois
