USC Morning Buzz: Will Lincoln Riley Continue Notre Dame Series?

Colin Cowherd suggested yesterday that USC no longer continue to play Notre Dame.

He has a history of making idiotic comments, so forget about him.

But the USC-Notre Dame series is currently only scheduled through 2026. Does Lincoln Riley want to continue it? What does he care about “the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football.” He didn’t seem to have much interest in the UCLA game last year either.

Would Jen Cohen stand up to Riley if he pressed her to discontinue the series? Her idea of a big rivalry is Washington-Oregon, which doesn’t rate outside the Pacific Northwest bubble.

What prats like Cowherd don’t understand is that the USC-Notre Dame game is something that makes these programs unique and gives them a status that teams like Oregon crave.

Also, it’s clear Cowherd didn’t read the article on Riley wanting to back out of the LSU game. He wanted out of the game before USC moved to the Big Ten. So when Cowherd said USC never should have scheduled the game, he factored in the Big Ten schedule.

Anyways, USC-Notre Dame is one of those things fans are going to need to keep an eye on to see if anyone tries to mess with it.

  1. Anybody can think whatever they want but SC-Notre Dame is not going anywhere, it would be like the song “Where have you gone Joe Dimaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you”

  2. Colin Cowherd considers dropping the game USC fans look forward to most? The game that brings in the most fans? The game with our biggest television audience? Carol Folt I think you just found your next Athletic Director.

    1. Cowherd is a clown.

But, if the story about Riley wanting out of the LSU game is true, then he needs to be called on the carpet and told that this is USC, we play anyone, just show him who McKay scheduled in the 60’s and 70’s, who Robo went up against in the 70’s, or PC saying SC would play anyone at anytime anywhere.

Maybe Little Lincoln would be better off coaching in the Mountain West Conference.

      2. This claim by Cowherd is just that – something to generate viewers. He’s nothing more than a gossip columnist trolling for scandals and if he can’t find one he’ll make one up.

Cowherd suffers from ‘little school’ envy – he went where West WA St. U? Nothing wrong with that but he’s been besotted with USC ever since he hit the airwaves….whatever charm machine he used with past USC officials appears to have fallen flat with the new regime.

Did Riley express a strong desire to drop the LSU game – sounds like he did – is he doing the same here – No

  4. -Not looking good for ‘Stump’ as the jury had the Pecker testimony read back; Pecker confirmed Stump gave Cohen permission to act on his behalf

    1. As a lawyer, maybe explain the instruction excusing the jury from arriving at unanimous consent on the underlying felony….. Dershowitz and Turley say they’ve never seen anything like it in their decades of practice….

  5. The cowardly Lincoln Riley will never have the power to cancel the traditional USC vs Notre Dame series. So far the only thing Riley has proven to be is a quarterback guru, not a championship caliber coach, and next season will prove my assessment to be correct. Two more mediocre seasons at $22m dollars should make Riley more vulnerable for a buyout.

    1. Probably right….but let’s see what happens this year when we have some respectable coaches on the defense….

[Riley’s allegiance to mediocre coaches caused him to lose the team last year —- let’s see if he can win them back]….

  6. -Always have been amazed at how serious juries take their ‘job’ when they don’t ‘have a horse in the race,’ and this ‘Stump Jury’ is no different as they are really tearing into certain pieces of evidence (which does not bode well for Stump)

    1. As a lawyer you really need to come to grips with the recusal issue [Merchan was required by state law to step down due to his daughter’s financial interest in case], the DOJ issue [they lent a federal prosecutor to a state prosecution], the election law issue [the judge wouldn’t allow expert evidence introduced to show non disclosure agreements don’t constitute election interference as a matter of law] and the insane instruction allowing the jury to come back guilty without coming to unanimous agreement on the underlying felony. The leading constitutional scholars in this country are saying this trial is leaving them in a state of amazement. You oughta feel the same way.

  7. If all of the B1G teams refused to play the “Independent” football ND, then that might force their hand in joining the conference, and consequently, more revenue for the conference. As it stands now, ND has their cake and they eat it too.

  8. Riley doesn’t have the clout to force the program to drop the ND game.

Remember when USC fans threw a fit over scheduling UC Davis, which would have been USC’s first I-AA opponent? The school wisely backed out of that game because of the uproar.

USC fans would get more hysterical if it comes out that USC might try to drop ND.

  9. There will be a frozen hell before USC vs Notre Dame is ended. It’s even more than about the game itself. USC vs Notre Dame connects football fans to a way of life that we all agree upon. For decades. May the best team win.

  10. I’ve said since the Big 10 membership was announced that I see USC discontinuing the series, as unfortunate as it is. But when you are already taking at least 4 Midwest (or farther) road trips a year, why add another one? It becomes too burdensome and some of the benefits of going that way to play ND are filled with Big 10 roadies. So unfortunately I see this happening. Plus, nobody cares about tradition in college football now, which is unfortunate because that’s what made the sport so great in the first place.
