USC Morning Buzz: Even Basic Traditions Are Botched

I hear the USC Board of Trustees met Monday.

We haven’t gotten any announcements out of it, so it looks like Carol Folt is secure.

  • Does the USC band know what a fight song is?

The tweet below (from the band) says “Tusk” is USC’s “fourth fight song.”

What?!?!?!?!?!

Tusk is a popular song and synonymous with the USC band. It is not and has never been a fight song. It is a Fleetwood Mac song.

USC has one fight song: Fight On.

Now there are other songs that are associated with USC athletics. “Tribute to Troy” is a fanfare. “Conquest” is a victory march. To say they are fight songs is not technically correct.

But whatever they are, it’s a lot closer to a fight song than “Tusk.”

  • Because people at USC think the band started with Art Bartner, let’s remember that Tommy Walker was the most accomplished band director. He used to write songs just for the USC band to play during football season. He also wrote the famous “Charge!” theme that got adopted across the nation by sports teams.

Walker released an album in 1953 called “Songs of Troy.”

It featured USC specific numbers like “Song of Troy” and “Trojan Warriors Charge” and “Watch the Trojans Roll.” None of these were labeled fight songs.

  3. The last few games at the Coliseum that I was at, the Band barely played. They had some dang awful DJ blaring noise whenever they could. You could not even talk to the person next to you! It completely took the crowd out of the game. After coming home with my ears ringing I decided, that’s the end for me. The game experience isn’t fun, it isn’t about the game. It’s about stupid noise and the tradition of the Best Band in All the Land is over. One player was once quoted as saying that the most irritating thing about playing against the Trojans in the Coliseum is the Band. He said it’s like they never stop playing! Now, it’s not like that. It’s 30 seconds of high volume distorted rap music. The spirit is gone. The crowd is not into the game. One of the best bands in the world has been replaced by thousands of watts and a couple of megabits of code. Anyone can buy that equipment. But nobody else, anywhere in the world can present the USC Marching Band in all its glory. I’m done with games for now because of this

      Crowd likely asleep or too drunk.

      Double edged sword – schools want TV revenue $ but night games are the result as not enough eyeballs to go around.

  9. The pre-game ritual with the sword being place in the ground while “Tribute to Troy” plays in the background is my favorite. If that doesn’t emotionally prepare you for the fight ahead nothing will.

  10. On ‘Glenn Beck Show’ this a.m. around 8:10 am a discussion began about the collapse of the Pac-12 and how this ‘change’ is not going to last i.e. won’t be long until real cracks emerge on how badly this is not sustainable long-term. I think they’re right and not just politically.

    opps I know citing Beck is sure to gin up the ‘demoncrats’ who roost here….snicket

  11. Tusk is a fight song designated by the faithful in the stands. We never sang the words, heck I don’t think Fleetwood Mac sang the words. However, in the turnaround part of the song the crowd would sing β€œUCLA sucks!” Them’s fighting words, so the tongue in cheek label of a fight song is appropriate.
    I am willing to bet Scott doesn’t know the other school who calls Tusk their song (hint it has something to do with their mascot, which has nothing to do with their team name)
