USC Adds Four To Board Of Trustees, Which Looks Like Good News For Carol Folt

USC has added four members to the Board of Trustees and it didn’t look far doing it. I’d say Carol Folt has consolidated her position here.

Mark Stevens, who has donated more than $100 million to USC, is returning for a second stint on the board. He has his name on several things at USC including the Stevens Academic Center for athletes, which is under Heritage Hall.

Or maybe you remember him as the investor in the Golden State Warriors who was ejected from Game 3 of the NBA Finals after getting into an altercation with Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors. He was banned from games for a year.

Alia Tutor is the wife of longtime USC trustee Ronald Tutor is another new trustee. The Tutor Campus Center is one of the most prominent buildings on the USC campus, just across from Tommy Trojan. Ronald Tutor remains a Life Trustee at USC.

Nadine Watt is the third new trustee. She is the granddaughter of Raymond Watt, who was on the Board of Trustee from 1968-2009. The street Watt Way on the USC campus is named after Raymond Watt.

Joseph Ucuzoglu is the fourth new trustee. He was already on the USC Board of Councilors at the Marshall Business School.

  2. The President answers to the Board of Trustees. It acts as a safeguard against a rogue or incompetent President. I am not impressed with this list. Appears that the best qualification for serving is that their families made large financial donations to the university. Who on the Board has experience operating a private university? How about a corporation with 20,000 or more employees? Anyone on the Board have experience operating a billion dollar hedge fund? How about banking and finance experience? Real Estate development? (Caruso) Government and private grants?

    1. I don’t know if you missed it but Nadine Watt is the CEO of a real estate company and Joseph Ucuzoglo is the CEO of Deloitte Global (415k employees).

    1. Very bad news CR. USC donors who actually believe in Capitalism, and American values need to leverage their donations. Think about what your supporting when you donate to a college.

  7. Just beat me to it, ‘soviet, the only NBA player to win MVP in the finals for a losing team. I just loved that quick draw shooting touch he had, and coupled with the equally great in a different way Elgin Baylor the Lakers captured L.A.’s interest

  8. Strangely, it was Bill Russell who said in 1972 that he hoped Jerry West “would be happy,” and yet it was primarily Russell throughout the 1960s that drove West to depression, a mental state Jerry never fully overcame despite all his accolades, fame and peer respect

Old Laker Frank Selvy comes to mind and how he could have changed the trajectory of the 1960s Celtics’ dominance over the Lake when his last second “winning” shot rimmed out and the Lake lost again to Boston. (Selvy is still alive at 91 and was the only collegiate to score 100 points in a game)

  10. Jerry West was a rarity, a superstar as a player who then went on to be a successful front office executive as GM during the Lakers’ Showtime era. Most superstars don’t want to (or can’t) coach; the most successful coaches tend to be role players or sixth men, e.g. Pat Riley or Phil Jackson.

  11. Jerry West, he was one of my idols. I remember him taking that half court shot to tie or win the game against the Knicks. The Lakers (Jeannie Buss) did him wrong. He had life time tickets to the Lakers and she took them away. Without West, the Lakers have not been the Lakers. May he RIP. A friend of mine played golf against West one time about 20 years ago and my friend beat West by a stroke. My friend was so atheltic, that he could have played major league baseball or play pro golf. I kick myself in the pants to this day, I was at 39th and Figuroa (where the old KFC was) and going to a SC football game. I look to my right and there is Jerry West. Heis around 6’5″. No one recognized him but me. I should have said hi to him. Very sad day.

  13. Strange how some of us just the other day were thinking back on Jerry West’s 60-foot heave- and then he dies

    West as a 3-year coach did well but not up to his high standards– and yet his teams were winning 70% and making the Playoffs each year but he said “I’m just not a good coach” and moved on

I bet Jerry West never forgot Frank Selvy’s missed “winning” shot in 1962 Boston, the first game between the 2 teams that set the stage for 6 altogether wins for Celtics over Lakers thru the ’60s which crushed me not to imagine Jerry who Chick Hearn said, “He took losses worse than any man I saw. He’d be staring off into space”
