USC Saturday Buzz: Recruiting Fortunes Could Reverse

USC could get some good news tomorrow when four-star linebacker Noah Mikhail of Bonita High School in La Verne makes his college choice.

Oregon and Texas A&M are his other choices.

At least if Mikhail commits, the odds of him changing his mind and going to the SEC would be a lot less than if he were from Georgia or Florida.

Mikhail makes his announcement at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on YouTube.

  • Four-star linebacker Marco Jones of San Ramon Valley High School in Danville will make his announcement July 2. His final four are USC, Texas, Michigan and Texas A&M.
  • USC has hired Kelsie Chaudoin as its new rowing coach. She has been an assistant at Virginia and Stanford.

She worked at Stanford with current Washington rowing coach Yaz Farooq, so you can guess where the connection came for hiring her.

  1. If the guy has Oregon and Texas in his final three, he is looking to be paid. You don’t go to Eugene, OR or College Station, TX for academics or lifestyle. Saw this guy on film and was not impressed. He kept taking poor angles and did not look particularly fast.

  7. Ali’s grandson just won a decision in Miami. Left shoulder dislocated in the last (6th) round and fought a good portion of that round with only his right hand. Couldn’t even lift his left hand high enough to defend himself. His opponent didn’t really take advantage of it.

        In the world of men [today, on earth] we need an Achilles not a Socrates. One who will take action, not ponder. Hannah Arendt, the great modern philosopher, spent a lot of time on the subject of Achilles. She also spent a lot of time discussing the dangers of taking action and the potential for unintended consequences. In the end, she concluded that in the world of men it is necessary to ACT….even though each act carries possible new challenges.

        I sat in the office of a do-nothing politician many times and always wondered why he had a photo of the Flying Wing on his wall. One day I asked why he hung that photo behind his desk. His answer: “That is the Flying Wing. It flies above the city. Beneath it, on the ground, people fight and kill each other. But the crew of the Flying Wing remains safe….above the fray.” I told him that would be a great answer if he were an ancient monk living atop a mountain —but he was a public servant charged with landing the plane, getting out and helping the people on the ground.

        Just pontificating on others’ imperfection isn’t really a solution. One needs to participate….and in the ‘world of real’ that means picking a side.
