Saturday Buzz: Yet Another Linebacker Spurns USC

USC suffered a recruiting loss today when four-star linebacker Riley Pettijohn of McKinney, Texas, committed to Ohio State.

Of course it will be blamed on NIL. Pettijohn was a top priority for USC, however, and the Trojans went hard after him. He is rated the 31st-best player in the nation.

He is the third linebacker this week to spurn USC. Ohio State currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country per Rivals. USC is No. 21.

Is anyone ever going to question Lincoln Riley on his recruiting strategy? He loves Texas players, which is where he is from.

  1. When discussing terms with a college the first thing out of a football recruit’s mouth is “Show me the money” and “Oh by the way, you have a good season last year?

      2. Yup! Always cries about it. Too dumb to take her own advice about not reading it & ” not touching the hot stove”. LMFAO!

What do you expect from someone dumb enough for a feeble old man with dementia. There’s no legitimate excuse for being so selfish that you wish that upon your fellow man. So many have died & suffered as a result of that sort of shortsightedness.

      3. P. S.

Remember when Joe challenged Trump to a debate? But it had to be by his rules? Remember all the “man against man” rhetoric? The cheap shot about “I hear you’re free [from Mershan show trial] on Wednesdays?”

  2. I don’t think Riley is impressed with California players. He wants to be a national program. It’s risky because your ability to close on them and keep them committed from 3,000 miles away is much more difficult. But, that does not appear to be the real problem. Two of the three linebackers we lost are from California. It’s the payola and NIL. Kids want the upfront money before signing a LOI and some programs are doing it. Not USC and that is costing them recruits.

    1. Riley knows what he’s doing ….. he’s looking for players who are about more than self….& as you know, Plow, a team of brothers can go a long way……

      2. Well, Gabby said Ed Lasher is not him. That is good enough for me. Maybe its Mike Germonprez, or Winston Smith, or Frank Young. I bet Gabby met all of these bloats on a special weekend in Provincetown, MA.

      4. So Cal: Hope you read at least a portion of the list of Trump’s accomplishments in office. It is not a choice between the lesser of two evils. It is a choice between accomplishments and failures.

  3. The Laker are dead.

How do you give a below average Bron a guaranteed contract?

Just lost on Demar too. Can’t blame it on NIL just overpaid LBJ.

    1. Teams generally pay too much for older players. Kobe got 30 million per year from the Lakers his last two years and barely played due to injury. His salary made it impossible to build a team and the Lakers tanked. It appears they are doing the same thing with LeBron.

  12. I understand the head scratching per Riley’s lack of (physical) moves per ‘NIL’ but explain to all how ‘the princess’ is fairing in the ‘NIL’ world or say TX or PA St.. Is the scenario you keep bellyaching about specific to USC/Riley or is it the same elsewhere? I think it’s a confused mess. It seems there is a lot of pandemonium with regard to NIL and I believe there was a move for congress to enter the fray for some guidelines as the NCAA has either been lanced mortally or is in the midst of pronouncing a template.

  13. Do I find it odd that Scott never made note of what Fox News reported per Bronny James comments made last week – rather than have this post ‘blocked for moderation’ here’s the text w.. the hyperlink that was from Tuesday 2nd July 2024

‘Of course, he had quite an eventful offseason, but he still averaged less than five points per game while starting six of his 25 games played.

Nonetheless, he was still the 55th selection in the NBA Draft, to his father’s Los Angeles Lakers.

James averaged 19.3 minutes per game with the Trojans. It remains to be seen what his role will be with L.A., and if history repeats itself, a 55th pick normally wouldn’t have much of one.

But James is here to rewrite history.

James said that the time missed in the summer kept him from “perfecting [his] game more,” and in turn, it cost him throughout the season.

“I feel like I’ve been given an opportunity to showcase what I can really do because I wasn’t given that much of an opportunity at USC,” James told the media on Tuesday.’
